Three 2009 Orioles have decided to refuse an outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk and have elected to file for free agency. Pitcher Rich Hill, outfielder Jeff Fiorentino and catcher Guillermo Rodriguez have filed their paperwork with Major League Baseball and have informed the Orioles that they will become free agents.

Because Rich Hill has better things to do?
Sorry Fiorentino couldn’t amount to anything. I liked Screech. He had a good series against the White Sox back when he got his first cuppa coffee.

Rich Hill will not be missed. When healthy again, he will get a chance somewhere.

It works, but it’s really, really ugly. And IE8 is still light years behind everyone else.

Maybe it's just me
But FF is hideously slow – it takes 3-4 minutes just to load my home page. And that’s after I disabled all add-ons except NoScript.

It's slow for me, but I blame Vista
Once it’s open, it runs nicely. Personally, I’m really liking Chrome. It loads quick even with my horrible OS and it runs every bit as fast, if not faster than, FF.

Yup, I tried with FF, I really did
but the huge memory leaks just got to be too much, and IE8 seems to have controlled that while coopting many of the features of the “better” browsers, like FF and Opera. So, back to the dark side I go.

Hill
The truly annoying part is that Hill is a good pitcher. A very good pitcher. It seems as though his injury may have ruined his possibly bright career.
Hard to deny that his first year with the Cubs was great.
by Dr Orpheus on Nov 4, 2009 12:23 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Ummmm. No.
His first year witht he cubs was a fluke.
by O'sFan21 on Nov 4, 2009 1:42 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Logic disagrees with you
In a game like baseball flukes don’t have an ERA of 3.92 with 183 SO while allowing 63 BBs in 195 IP. Not to mention his minor league numbers, which suggest he would be a solid #2 starter.
The walks have always been high, no question.
by Dr Orpheus on Nov 4, 2009 5:54 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
it was not a fluke....he actually was a decent pitcher
then he chatted with mark prior. since then he had all sorts of back issues and reverted back to some awful mechanics. exceptionally wild ever since.
by twistedlogic on Nov 4, 2009 9:12 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Well
He was always exceptionally wild, so why wouldn’t you think the one year where he randomly put it together was the fluke? Why isn’t it more likely that his mechanics are just awful and that year they randomly clicked? Isn’t the definition of a fluke, one random period of success?
by O'sFan21 on Nov 4, 2009 10:31 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
M-W.com: fluke:
1 : an accidentally successful stroke at billiards or pool
2 : a stroke of luck
183 SO versus 63BB isn’t a stroke of luck. That’s just plain good performance. And his BABIP was right in line with what you would expect (.280). So he was definitely wasn’t lucky or unlucky go with the traditional definition of fluke. Random is better… but Hill has been consistent in his inconsistency. Some years, he just manages to keep his control in check and he strikes out tons of people. Other years, his control fades and he stinks. I wouldn’t be surprised if Hill has a terrific 2010 because that seems to fit his past behavior.

Ok...
So I guess we’re talking about word choice (again). Random might be a better word choice than fluke. I wasn’t implying that it was luck that got him that season – just that something randomly clicked and that there was no indication that it was ever going to happen again. Apparently I just didn’t know the definition of fluke since I said it was a random occurance of success.
I would be VERY surprised if he Hill has a terrific 2010. His stuff is just plain not very good. I think his one good season was a result of the league being awed by his curveball and by him randomly being able to throw strikes for once. His other pitches are AWFUL and if you lay off his curveball (which everybody did after that) he’s really just not a very good pitcher.
by O'sFan21 on Nov 4, 2009 3:59 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I just don’t like describing his 2007 as a fluke because it suggests no ability. It, as the definition of the word suggests, chalks up his 2007 to luck. I wanted to give Rich Hill more credit than that. That’s all.

Agreed
Three straight seasons, in the minors leading up to the majors, suggests late-bloomer growth and progress. His terrible 08-09 campaigns seems like an issue, as the mlbtraderumor post suggests, a lack of adjustment/injury instead of any inability to pitch.
by Dr Orpheus on Nov 4, 2009 5:47 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I still see
A guy who carved up the minors (some of the time) because of a nasty out-pitch, which is really not unheard of at all (guys with strange stuff can dominate the minors indefinitely without ever being good at the majors), and was able to carry it over to the majors for one season before it fell apart.
by O'sFan21 on Nov 4, 2009 6:08 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
well yeah, i think that’s what everybody sees… what you said doesn’t contradict what dr. orpheus says. whether he can it around should be interesting. given his erratic nature, it wouldn’t surprise me especially if injuries have been holding him back.

I don't know man.
He said the annoying thing is that Hill is a good pitcher – I don’t see that at all. I see a really erratic pitcher who had one good year. I definitely don’t see a good pitcher. A good pitcher has at least decent stuff and can throw strikes.

He said the annoying thing is that Hill is a good pitcher – I don’t see that at all.
Actually, I think what dr. o and myself are saying is something slightly different. I don’t think anybody would say Hill is a good pitcher. He’s sucked the past two years. Anybody who tells you otherwise is crazy. But what I would say is that Hill showed the potential to be a good number 2 starter based on his development. As you said, he carved up the minors (some of the time) and then posted a very strong ML season during his first full season. At that time, all of the available suggested a guy who would be a good, but erratic, starting pitcher. As John Sickels said at the end of 2007,
But Hill had a great year in 2006, solidifying his progress and posting a 135/21 K/BB in 100 innings in Triple-A, then a 90/39 K/BB and 4.17 ERA in 99 innings in the majors. This year he went 11-8, 3.92 (ERA+ 116) with a 183/63 K/BB in 195 innings. Now 27, Hill likely has several strong seasons ahead of him provided his command stays where it is now.
So yeah, Rich Hill has sucked. But he showed legit promise earlier and his 2007 season wasn’t some lucky year. Maybe he’ll turn thing around, maybe he won’t.

So…you might be saying something different, but that’s what I took from Dr. O since he said it.
by O'sFan21 on Nov 4, 2009 8:42 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Fair enough
If I could rephrase: I think Rich Hill had the potential to be a good pitcher and demonstrated that potential in his 2007 season. In 2007, Hill was a good pitcher. Since then, however, he has been inept at throwing in the strike zone or showing any kind of control.
I still think the potential is there…somewhere.
by Dr Orpheus on Nov 5, 2009 12:53 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Me too damn it.
I see the potential. And I think he’ll put up a few good seasons in a 9 to 10 year career. But he’ll always be erratic.
