Monday Morning Open Thread

So it was Thanksgiving weekend. There was literally no Orioles news over the holiday. Zip. Sort of makes it difficult to round up news links, don't you think?

That doesn't mean we can't talk Orioles baseball, though, so chat it up. It's the holiday season so what is on your Orioles Christmas list? Conversely, what could happen for the O's this off-season that would make you just freak right out?

How about that Ravens-Steelers game?

Favorite Thanksgiving dish? The turkey is probably the least essential thing on my plate. Mmmmashed potatoes...yum.

And what is this Tiger Woods nonsense? Seen any good movies lately? What's in rotation on your iPod?

The floor is yours. Happy Monday!

Oh, I just listed albums

Because that’s how I roll. Albums.

Accept for Coldplay. I cannot listen to one of their records the whole way through. That includes their EP.

Yeah I love full albums...

But I felt like listing songs for some reason. I hate the whole download one song culture that has developed, I think albums should be made and listened to as a whole.

‘Floating World’ by Anathallo

They are the most incredible band to see live…I can’t even describe it…

That’s so cool that you’ve heard of Anathallo….I don’t know too many people that do….usually there shows have like 50 people or less….makes it even better.

Albums...

The Pixies are playing all of “Doolittle” tonight and tomorrow night in at Constitution Hall in DC. I don’t listen to many albums the whole way through anymore, but I do love me a good Pixies album. Man, if I only had monies… but $50+ for a concert is not in the cards for me right now.

And a few years ago I saw The Mars Volta in NYC and they basically played De-loused in the Comatorium the whole way through… maybe one of the best shows I’ve ever been to.

Mars Volta

I saw them do that at the Metro in Chicago. It was packed, they went nuts, and I saw a bunch of Mexican dudes in cowboy boots with spurs. It was wild.

I don't really use my Ipod much

still clinging to my cd’s in the car, but mainly listening to Muse. I’ve been a fan for years, but they’ve really become my favorite current band. Listening mostly to their current album (Resistance), and their 2nd album (Origin of Symmetry). I’m really an album guy, though. Can’t really say that there are any single songs i’m currently listening to (which I guess explains why I like cds still).

I LOVE THE SEA AND CAKE!

I found them accidentally, when a friend thought he was taking me to a concert for Cake that had an opening act by some group called The Sea. When I saw the venue, I was like, “That place is way to small for Cake to be playing there”, and looked up the actual set schedule and had to tell him the bad news. So we didn’t go.

Afterwards on a whim I decided to check out the group we’d skipped: downloaded their album off iTunes, and I love it.

No, and we'll never know what happened

Neil Cohen was talking about Tiger on NPR today. Him and his guest, a golf columnist for the WSJ, said it’s better to release negative details now because we’ll eventually find out what happened anyways. How we’ll ever find out is beyond me. The only people who know what happened are Tiger and his wife. And based on the 911 tape, Tiger’s wife doesn’t even know what happened when Tiger wrecked his car. I guarantee you neither Tiger or his wife will give up any details. So we’ll be left with “unnamed friends” leaking unsubstantiated rumors.

Ray Rice

I don’t think i’ve ever been happier to see someone succeed in pro sports than I am about Ray. He’s a local kid and I followed him through his career at RU. On draft day I was just hoping he wouldnt get picked by the Pats or any other NFC East team. Thankfully he went to one of my other favorite teams, so it made rooting for him that much easier. I always thought he had enough skill to be a RB1 in the NFL, but he’s playing beyond what I ever could have hoped for. I love that kid.

and that game was so, so satisfying. It feels so great to love a team, watch them slug it out with their rival, win, and then know that the win actually matters. And if it wasn’t clear, I’m implying the Orioles do the opposite of that… but that will all change soon.

I saw a bunch of movies last week

In theaters:

The Messenger with Woody Harrelson (who’s been doing a lot of great work lately, even in bad movies) and Ben Foster. Very good, with great chemistry between Woody and Ben, and lots of both powerful and humorous scenes. A movie that really tugs on the heartstrings and then throws in some levity to balance everything out.

The Road with Viggo Mortenson and some cameos by a bunch of “Hey it’s whatshisfaces!”s, including The Wire’s Michael K. Williams. I was a big fan of the book, both because I like Cormac McCarthy and I like post-apocalyptic science fiction, so I had been anticipating the movie for some time. It falls somewhere between good and great – great performances by everyone but many moments that were intended to be powerful or touching just fell a little flat. The film is just missing the intangibles that made every scene of “The Messenger” resonate long after that film ended. But otherwise, good for what it is – a sci-fi flick for the literary crowd. Think “Children of Men” without being whiny and pretentious.

Fantastic Mr. Fox, directed by one of my guilty pleasures, Wes Anderson. I wasn’t initially excited about this one, because I think these ensemble cast movies where everyone mumbles and generally goofs off (ie the Oceans films) are exercises in navel-gazing self-absorption which leaves the audience on the outside looking in. Not the case with this film – not only does Anderson use the stop-motion animation to bring to life an entire world that is better looking and more realized that any of his previous efforts, but the voices fit the characters and it’s easy to forget who the voice actually belongs to. An EW review said that Anderson has finally found a home with stop-motion animation, and I think I agree. His unique style fits perfectly.

On tee-vee:

In Bruges. Black comedy that struck all the right notes with me. I actually like Colin Ferrel and have always been a Brendan Gleeson fan, and they are a lot of fun to watch together. Hilarious.

It’s a bad movie in the sense that bad movies can still be fun, so I knew what I was getting into when I walked into the theater. I expected the bad and it lived up to expectations.

I think I went in expecting too much though. Still gonna own it, just was expecting a little bit more.

by daveh873 on Nov 30, 2009 12:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not that I can substantiate this, but

I heard somewhere that Zombieland was originally pitched as a TV series at ABC, and that they writers had already laid out a 13-episode storyline. The suits at the network passed on it, I guess, and somehow the pitch was turned into a film instead. So that may explain why the film does feel a little thin – maybe this was the story of the pilot? Or maybe they combined a couple episodes into the film. Either way, it looks like they already have some material ready for some sequels. And I want sequels!

Also did a lot of watching this week

Serialized dramas for t.v.
Sitting down and with one of these things, the entire season(s) at your fingertips is downright dangerous. I have amazed myself with my capacity to sit, eat and watch episode after episode.
Anyway I was introduced to a great show, Breaking Bad, this week. It follows the life of a High School chemistry teacher diagnosed with terminal cancer who turns to the production of meth for some much needed cash. It just squeaks in to my top five shows:
1. Deadwood
2. The Wire
3. The Sopranos
4. Mad Men
5. Breaking Bad
(HM) Lost
(HM) Firefly

Mad Men: This show might not be for everyone. I didn’t catch on right away for two reasons. The movement of the plot is glacially slow. There aren’t cliffhanger stories that prompt you throw in episode after episode in one sitting. Second, many of the characters are unlikable. The business setting of an ad agency in the fifties can at times be revolting. That said it is probably one of the smartest shows ever produced. I feel it really respects the viewer. Rich, layered character development and beautiful set production.
Breaking BadThe main character is the dad from Malcolm in the Middle. And believe it or not he carries the show. There are two seasons done and one scheduled for the spring. The plot moves fast following our hero as he is gradually transformed into a criminal.
FireflyThere was only one season of this but it was a lot of fun. It is set in space a hundred years or so into the future. The heroes are a bunch of smuggler, Han Solo types. The writing is witty and humorous.

I don’t understand why someone would take pictures of themselves like that, and I think it’s a pretty toolish thing to do, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t going to look at them.

I don’t want to gawk, but I can’t look away…

But, apparently he took the photos for his playboy-bunny girlfriend, and the photos were stolen off her email? So… that’s sort of less tool-ish? At least they were for someone else, or so we’re supposed to believe, and it wasn’t just a Grady-Alone-Fun-Time-Fashion-Shoot.

Jim Johnson the only pitcher on the whole team with an ERA+ of over 100? I know it’s going to be a bumpy road but that seems extreme.

Apparently they also think that Lou Montanez has a better chance of batting .300 than Matt Wieters, and that Ty Wigginton has a better chance of doing so than Adam Jones.

I don’t think I can take these projections seriously now.

Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.

by Vuff on Nov 30, 2009 1:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

as stated on BTF...

… it’s projecting those percentages based on playing time. Since Jones has a lot more at-bats than Montanez, it’s correspondingly more likely that Montanez will bat .300 (and it’s also more likely that he will bat .100)

think about it. if I give Lou Montanez 10 at bats and Adam Jones 600 AB, it’s pretty darn likely that Montanez hits 5/10, just by chance. But it would be nearly impossible for Jones to hit 300/600.

by ugen64 on Nov 30, 2009 4:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I see your point, but it has Lou getting 337 AB.

Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.

by Vuff on Nov 30, 2009 5:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well, his projected BA is also higher to begin with

ZiPS is a conservative projection system. rarely, if ever, does it predict a player will have a big breakout season (if you want to see that, go look at Bill James’ projections). Adam Jones has hit only .268 in the majors in a large sample (over 1000 AB). Montanez has a much smaller ML sample to work with (194 AB), which means the projection system will weight his 500+ AB in the minor leagues very highly – and in that sample he hit well over .300 (close to .340, eyeballing it).

I think you’re letting your preconceived notions of these players take precedence over the numbers, which, like it or not, isn’t what this (and most) projection systems do. I’m not saying that’s wrong, I’m just saying you can’t criticize a computer program for looking only at the numbers. we know Adam Jones is young and has a much higher upside than Montanez, but the computer only sees the data. the data show that Jones has a relatively low BA in a large sample size. Montanez has a lower BA, but the sample size is tiny – so it looks at his great minor league numbers and that’s why he’s projected so high.

by ugen64 on Nov 30, 2009 6:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I should also mention

ZiPS does actually look beyond the numbers, a little bit. it compares a player to similar players – based on position, height/weight, and age – and factors those into the projection (obviously taking into account how similar those players are). this is why I actually like ZiPS better than CHONE and Marcel (for example), because those projection systems only look at the statistics, and nothing else.

by ugen64 on Nov 30, 2009 6:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ah, okay, that makes more sense.

I didn’t realize the effect of the small major league sample versus the larger minor league sample. That makes it more understandable.

I do get that most projection systems are going to be conservative since they’re based much more on production-to-date rather than human-observed potential and progress, since the latter are based on intuition and such. In Matt Wieters’s case, for example, that last month or so of the season when he hit .300 can be read as either a hot streak or the result of adjustments and a new baseline. We hope it’s the latter, but a computer’s going to assume the former (if it examines that sort of thing separately at all, and I’m guessing it doesn’t).

I’m not really suggesting the methodology is bad, either, just that I’m taking some of it with a large grain of salt. I was just exaggerating for effect in that original post, lol.

Matt Wieters projection

Heaven forbid a projection predicts an average season from him. Even Joe Mauer didn’t light it up his first full season (107 OPS+). Otherwise, I like these projections much better than Bill James. Much more realistic.
