This is still just a rumor given that it came from a MySpace page, but an interesting tidbit for a slow Saturday. If it gets confirmed I'll obviously have a lot more to say about it. For right now I'll say: If true it's awesome, but not really deserved. But the GGs are a joke anyway.

Ha

I just saw this and was about to post in the open thread. I agree; as much as I like the good doctor, I don’t think he quite deserves it this year. At the same time, I definitely think he and Nick have been better than UZR suggests.

gold gloves are a joke

Franklin Gutierrez definitely deserves the GG over any other OF. I would hope that Jones’ gold glove doesn’t come at the expense at Gutierrez, but I wonder how many Gold Glove voters are actually familiar with UZR to begin with (even though I have problems with that stat).

total joke

look no further than 1999 Palmeiro. Often pointed out thanks to its ridiculousness.

Outfield Gold Gloves are the worst.

It’s incredibly unfair to have three awards just for outfielders in general, because they’re almost inevitably going to three center fielders. (Or, in the AL, to two center fielders and Ichiro.)

Jones and not Markakis?

WTF?

Yeah

Like Vuff said above

The GG’s seem to be biased to the center fielders.

It's not just bias

Here’s the thing. If you give three awards that cover the whole outfield, it makes sense that center fielders will almost always win because the center fielders are the best defensive players. That’s why they play center field. If the award is going to cover all OF, then CF should win it most of the time.

Unfortunately, because center fielders are generally the best defenders, the lazy voters will always assume that center fielders are always the best defenders, which is why Carl Crawford has never won a GG.

Well, this is a strange rumor.

If an Oriole WERE to win it, Jones over Markakis? Really?
I know, I know, they love CFers. But still doesn’t make sense.
The whole thing is a joke.

I'm happy, confused

and not sure that this is even true.

Update

Roch is “told that it’s true”. Doesn’t give a source. It’s amazing that Paul Blair had been the only other Oriole OF to win a GG.

really

I wouldn’t think of Paul Blair as my first choice.
