I say we go after Halladay...

and ink him to a record-breaking 4 year deal. He’s only 32.

Itll never happen but I would pee my pants if I saw Roy donning Orange.

by Wieters Wieners on Dec 1, 2009 11:56 AM EST reply actions

Trade and extend....

Toronto seems like they will definitely get a deal done before spring training because it would be pointless for them to have him for the entire year next season. He said he won’t approve a trade mid-season (who knows if thats true).

Like I said, it would never happen, but I would love to have that kind of ace in the rotation for 4-5 years.

Also he has a NTC

So he’d have to waive it to come to Baltimore. Call me crazy, but I don’t see him jumping at the bit for that.

I’d sort of like to see him go to the NL just to see how crazy dominant he’d be.

Call me nuts, but with him I dont think the postseason would be out of the question.
We’d have to sell him on that though… lol.

Actually had a weird dream last night

that I was hanging out in the outfield during a BP session and Roy and Josh Hamilton were shagging flies around me. My parents were there and so was my college coach and I was talking to Roy and Josh about random shit. They were also playing the game that everybody plays while shagging where you try to peg the guy on bucket duty. The difference between how they were playing it and how we played it in college is that instead of lobbing the balls at him or trying to hit him in the shins on a bounce they were throwing it about 100 mph at each other’s chests/backs. haha I could hear the spin on the throws – very vivid. Also some gigantic goofy left handed white guy was hitting while wearing a ravens shirt (not tucked in) and it looked like he hadn’t shaved in a week or two.

I had a dream that I had to sneak out of Ray Lewis’ house without him finding me. It was terrifying. I don’t know what I was doing there.

Weren't you the one calling...

the allegations surrounding the events about Tiger Woods unfounded because there is no proof on the matter?

If Ray Lewis had been found guilty in a court of law for murder he would not be one of the most feared linebackers on the planet this season.

by Wieters Wieners on Dec 1, 2009 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

Indeed I was.

Let’s compare the two situations just for kicks:

Ray Lewis – involved in a fight in which two people died and was arrested and charged with MURDER and AGGRAVATED ASSAULT. Charges only dropped when he agreed to testify against his buddies who probably did kill the two guys (although they were acquitted). Lewis was found guilty of obstruction of justice, sentenced to a year of probation, fined $250k.

Tiger Woods – crashed his car.

Not really sure how the two are even remotely related.

by O'sFan21 on Dec 1, 2009 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

Just the principle of basing judgement on the evidence....

Does it matter if Ray Lewis was “charged with murder” if he was never found guilty. Im a big Ray fan, so “charged with….” becomes pretty irrelevant when debasing someone’s charactar. Now “convicted of…” works better. So if Lewis’ buddy did murder someone, I imagine he would have been in a pretty tough place.

Tigers story isnt remotely close… its just a tabloid’s dream, but its pretty evident something is fishy and him just coming out with the truth would probably make people go away quickly. If you don’t run, the media doesnt chase you.

by Wieters Wieners on Dec 1, 2009 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

Well

usually the police don’t charge somebody with a crime without there being evidence. When witnesses change their stories on the stand in a case against a rich/famous person, forgive me if I am a little suspicious. Also he settled civil suits with the victims families – what’s that about if he was so innocent?

Look I don’t think he killed those two guys or anything, but I don’t like the fact that now everybody thinks he’s some kind of role model because he talks about god and speaks at guys funerals. Spare me.

And I really could care less about the Tiger Woods thing – nobody got hurt so I don’t see what the big deal is. If he doesn’t feel like talking that’s his right.

by O'sFan21 on Dec 1, 2009 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

Look...

Im not banging down the door on Ray’s character…. personally, I think he’s a decent guy who probably made some mistakes. Am I going to point to him as a person to my kid’s and say “that’s who you want to emulate”? Absolutely not. Am I going to point to his passion and tenacity on the field and hope they can bring some of that to the table. For sure. I love the guy and I love his will to win. I love the passion and excitement he brings to the table and I love his leadership getting the other guys fired up.

As for Tiger, I never really like the guy anyway. He comes off like a drone with a club that barely has any personality other than throwing clubs and dropping f bombs at reporters but then flashing his billion dollar smile for sponsors. I think he has some real issues and of course its not illegal for him to keep quiet about the notion his wife was pissed he was banging another chick and beat his cadillac with a golf club while he tried to flee from her….. but Im just saying, if you don’t address these rumors, they will be far worse than the truth. If he doesn’t care about his public image, so be it. I love a juicy story as much as the next guy.

by Wieters Wieners on Dec 1, 2009 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed.

On both counts. You’d be hard pressed to find a better team player than Ray Lewis – I just don’t like all the BS that people throw his way about character. I also have a real thing about athletes talking about god constantly (like god – if there is one – gives two shits about some fucking football game).

I’ve never liked Tiger either, but as far as the golf club to his car I thought the explanation that the doors can’t be opened fromt he outside while it’s in drive explained that pretty well. I also agree that he’d be better served just saying what happend unless it’s some really crazy fucked up shit. Which maybe it is…

by O'sFan21 on Dec 1, 2009 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

You are gonna hate me again, lol.

Ive always liked when athletes of faith thanked God for blessing them with their abilities. I think we should all be thankful and feel blessed for what we’ve been given.

Now if a player actually says “I prayed and God was rooting for US to beat THEM”…. I think thats ridiculous. But just being grateful for the talents God gave you and voicing that doesn’t bother me a bit.

That game was so enjoyable

Particularly at the end, when Brady had been pulled and he and Belichick were next to one another on the sidelines looking unhappy.

For fellow Ravens fans, I noticed a few prominent Chris McAlister plays. He got away with an armbar while breaking up an intermediate pass, but a few plays later was absolutely toasted by Randy Moss. He let Moss blow by him and then just stared into the backfield while Brady chucked it deep.

I dropped in occasionally last year, and I think the content has improved since then. I don’t feel great about Monday, with Rodgers against our defense, but you can’t ever count the Ravens out. The only two games they were totally outclassed were the Cincy games, and even there they had chances to pull it out.

So many terribly close losses...

I cant help but die inside thinking about the missed opportunity at home against Indy with Flacco throwing that insane pass over the middle in triple coverage. I have nightmares of Haushka lining up for that FG in Minnesota. Compare to Haushka, Billy Cundiff looks like the savior of the Ravens. Even that 56 yarder he came up just short on the other night looked great!

fan projections

FanGraphs has introduced a new feature to their website – fan projections!

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/the-2010-fan-projections

You have to register, but I promise you won’t get any spam – I haven’t received a single e-mail (spam or otherwise) from them since I registered, almost a year ago. You can see the current list of players with at least 30 fan projections here:

http://www.fangraphs.com/projections.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&type=fan

Right now that list is dominated by Mariners (probably because one of the FanGraphs writers also runs USS Mariner, their largest fanblog). Let’s get on that! So far Matt Wieters is the only Oriole with at least 30 projections.

The Yankees/sox thing..

Just sits there everyday and eats at me. Slowly baseball is killing itself but they don’t even see it coming it seems. I have twin 2yr old boys but tell me why I should raise them to root for a team that will never have a chance to win just because of their division? And I don’t mean other Os fans, I mean MLB. I’m a redskins fan and during a recent argumen with a Yankees/giants fan and patriots/sox fan I pointed out that if daniel snyder ever saw an upcapped year and ppl like manning, Brady, Peterson, etc were on the market their teams would get buried. They were so quick to argue about how unfair that was becausemy owner/team was richer and made more money than theirs. I then asked them why they felt that was fair in baseball and not football— they both just sat there like they hadhad some sort of revelation. Then they went on to argue that football will never be uncapped whereas te only way baseball can survive is uncapped.

Personally, I feel if baseball isn’t capped within 5 years, it will start to fade out entirely. Soccer is gaining ground as a summer sport in the US. I don’t care for the sport myself but I’ll be damned if I stand by and watch a baseball season predetermined by who spent more money in the offseason, the yankees or redsox.

by GeoffreyA on Dec 1, 2009 2:22 PM EST via mobile reply actions   1 recs

soccer is a terrible example

every major soccer league in the world, except for MLS (which is barely a major league) is uncapped. moreover, some of the largest teams routinely run deficits in order to pursue short-term victories. Real Madrid, for instance, spent over $300 million this summer simply to buy the rights of players they wanted to sign (and then paid each of them a huge salary on top of that).

for people who were complaining about Beckham’s contract – that’s not particularly high, compared to other top soccer players. Cesc Fabregas, the captain of Arsenal, makes I believe 100,000 pounds per week – that’s nearly $200,000 per week, or about $11 million a year. He’s signed through 2015. You have to add that any team that tries to sign him would have to pay more than $60 million just to buy his rights. John Terry, the Chelsea captain, earns closer to 150,000 pounds per week, and he would cost a similar amount (not that Chelsea would dream of selling him). Real Madrid paid $130 million to buy the rights to Cristiano Ronaldo, then signed him to a 6 year, $120 million contract.

soccer is just baseball on a much larger scale (since there are about 6 leagues all over the world playing at a very high level).

by ugen64 on Dec 1, 2009 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

You missed my point about soccer

It has nothing to do with money. I’m simply saying that as soccer gains popularity, the sport that will suffer the most is baseball. If baseball is unable to continue to feed it’s fan machine, it will eventually fade out. Thebig market teams need the little guys more than vice versa.

by GeoffreyA on Dec 1, 2009 2:39 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

No, the sport that will suffer most

is probably hockey, and possibly professional basketball, since both of those sports are run by the sorts of men that make Bud Selig look downright competent.

Also, soccer will never be a popular spectator sport in America, because it’s terribly boring unless you’re playing it.

And really I get pumped through the roof until I look at payrolls, and more importantly the draft. The redsox and Yankees have made it known that they will pay big to get who they want. What’s to stop toptier guys from making ridiculous demands that only those trams can meet.

I am optimistic and my boys will b oriole fans( the have markakis jerseys and a markakis street sign already from their first game). But it just feels wrong sometimes the way MLB is going.

Btw, if u tell my kids ur a Yankees fan they have been trained to respond “the Yankees re bad people” and when u ask y- “cause they are cheaters”, followed by “the orioles are gonna bust them up daddy!”

by GeoffreyA on Dec 1, 2009 4:24 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

It's not that my hope is disappearing

It’s everytime I look at the future potential free agents list and realize we likely won’t ever be able to outbid for the piece we need. Let’s all be realists here—- donks alone would have given us 6-8 more wins last year alone I feel. I’m a “lineup protection matters” kinda guy. If our 2/3 hitter has texeira batting behind him last year that guy ( hi Nicky) has a career year. There are times where you have to ho off the deep end ( we aren’t winning so we have to overpay imo) to get that piece. Offer him 20-40mil more— say f it we have the young guys coming, here’s our all in. Do what you have to do to get that guy. Ik most of u aren’t but I’m a big lackey guy based solely on his grit and wanting to challenge bos/nyy. IMO, that is what our young pitchers need.

Anyway, I will always love my team— as will my children(there’s always the grandparents if they choose not to b Os fans lol), and I try hard to be optimistic but the large elephant in the room keeps slapping me upside the head with something and mocking me. I don’t mind rooting for a losing team, but I simply refuse to acknowledge that MLB is competitive anymore and it’s only going to get worse unless someone steps in. When the yanks/sox are drafting 26th and getting the best player on the draft because they will shell out a 15mil signing bonus what optimism will REALLY be left?

ok so,

Do i go reg. Home O’s hat with orange brim or ’60 somethings throwback, all black with orange bird outline. Your response literally equals my decision.

"Chicks who dig home runs aren’t the ones who appeal to me, I think there’s sexiness in infield hits because they require technique. I’d rather impress the chicks with my technique than with my brute strength. Then, every now and then, just to show I can do that, too, I might flirt a little by hitting one out."-Ichiro

I'm loving the new O's hats with teh orange brim.

I also love the fact they’re also the away hat, too.

no reply button for me...

two dreams on back to back nights…

1. I had to go to prison for hitting someone in the chest…with a lemon.

2. I got a new job as a home remodeler. All of the homes were one bedroom homes for little people with really low ceilings. My back was killing me.

haha that's pretty solid

My fiance told me this morning that in the middle of the night last night I said “That’s not cool, man. Two foreign guys and a guy with a weird haircut!”

I should start posting more of my sleep-talk here – it’s pretty entertaining.

One of my most vivd dreams was one where I was jacking with someone’s pet porcupine. The damn thing latched onto my finger and if you’ve ever had a porcupine bite your finger (I actually have not) there just doesn’t seem to be much you can do but shake your finger at it.

haha that's pretty good

A few weeks ago I apparently sat up in bed, pointed at this dog that we were fostering for a week or two and said “Do you realize that dog has 11 unpaid invoices??”
