Their franchises make a dollar every time you mention their name. Perhaps refer to them as ‘The Team That Shall Not Be Named’ or ‘Those Bitches Up North’ or ‘The Last Team to Sign a Black Player’.

LOLs, brb, nwoinrglwkrnhwn I’m going to go kill myself for lowering myself to such a level.
Imagine if Wieters switches numbers
First Matusz takes George Sherrill’s number after Sherrill is traded to the Dodgers. Now he’s taking Aubrey Huff’s number after Huff departs. Who’s next? No veteran is safe.
To be fair, Matusz wore 17 in college and with Team USA. I figured it was only a matter of time before he moved in on Huff’s uni.
I had some fun with this back in August after he took 52.
I decided to check the 40-man roster.
Wieters is already listed as #32; Matusz is still #52 for now.
Weaver's Fourth Law: Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs.
Why'd They Give Him 15?
Why’d he even wear 15 in the first place? He’s always worn 32, and nobody was wearing it last season. Seemed kinda strange to me at the time.
That was the entire reason I waited to get his authentic jersey. Glad I didn’t jump the gun and buy a 15 out of excitement.

In other news
Camden Chat has been shut down by the Sarcasm Police for “over-sarcasming” by users.
One officer at the scene said, “Yeah, this is totally an interview. Your journalistic integrity astounds me.”
Yeah
It seems like the Blue Jays are in ’08 Orioles mode now.
You know, this sort of brings up a question that’s been nagging me for a while, but it seems like a lot of teams have been able to rebuild somewhat faster than the Orioles have been. Is it just me?
If not, I assume it’s a function of a) the division, and b) the lack of a farm system (a problem the fightin’ BJs share at the moment), c) the lack of real, proven impact players to start the rebuild with. But all the same, it does feel like it’s taken longer than it maybe could or should.
Does this bother anyone else?
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
Tampa had top draft picks
for how many years and just finally put it all together 2 years ago. True this wasn’t rebuilding in the same concept as the Birds, but they were awful for quite awhile.
It does suck that the O’s are still considered to be rebuilding, however it was just yesterday that we drafted Wieters and MacPhail was laying out his plan. Now we are really seeing the results. 2010 will be a crucial year for the club…after this season I think we will really know how successful the front office has been in its efforts.
by sickuvitall on Dec 15, 2009 10:43 AM EST up reply actions
yea it does
and i agree. you can’t rebuild without a farm system and the o’s had to restock there before getting any results.

Yeah
It will be interesting to see how Toronto does. The more I think about it, the more their situation is EXACTLY what ours was after the Bedard trade. New GM comes in, trades the most valuable commodity, which is an ace. Not much else in the farm system. Kevin Millar is aroundish. A few solid players, but nobody to really franchise.
This will be interesting, comparing the two organizations over the next couple of years.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
But even they weren't starting from total scratch.
4 years ago the O’s organization was basically barren (hayden penn and adam loewen as top prospects???) – the Blue Jays at least already have a bunch of young pitchers.
And guys like Snider and Lind on offense

Well
when MacPhail took over, we did have Arrieta, Wieters, Markakis, Reimold, Roberts, and a couple of interesting prospects (even if they didn’t pan out at all), not to mention Tejada, Mora, and Bedard. We weren’t completely lost, we were just 95% lost.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
They were worth something to other teams

Look, dude
I’m just saying that the two teams are/were in remarkably similar situations. It’s not exact, let’s not fucking split hairs about minute details.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
I disagree
we had 3 prospects and 2 major league players – it’s really not a comparable situation. They have a whole rotation of prospects.
Sorry, read "Mora" and thought "Bedard"

Funny you should ask
According to Rob Neyer, Mora is the 61st best player of the decade.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?id=4740695
Tejada is #30. Sosa is #65. Mussina (an O in 2000, although some may argue that the decade began in 2001 – Neyer does not) is #35.
The rankings are based on WAR, btw
and some subjective measures like postseason performance and character when things get close. Example: Manny is one spot ahead of Vlad because Vlad can’t hit in the postseason.
You sure that's what he used???
Wasn’t fucking Beltran 5th? Does he really have the 5th best WAR for the decade?
I took a shortcut, ranking the players (including pitchers) by wins above replacement (with a great deal of help from Baseball Projection.com).
We were also holding out hope for guys like
Rad Liz, Penn, Loewen, and Ray. We had half of a major league lineup and like two pitchers and our position prospects were all but worthless.
Was it?
They were already there when MacPhail got here (Don’t know about Liz). I agree with O’sfan, I was never impressed with them. I consider this the first cream of the crop for the MacPhail era.

Right - that was my point.
I think other people here were arguing that we had a similar organization as the blue jays do currently – I think the blue jays are in dramatically better shape than we were.
Look, I'm no expert on the Blue Jays
But they have exactly two quality positional players (Lind and Hill), which is what the Orioles had (Roberts and Markakis), but are also albatrossed by at least horrid contract (Wells), which the Orioles had their fair share of, too.
As for the farm system, all I can say is that two years ago (pre-trades) the Orioles’ system was ranked 16th by BA, and entering 2009 the Blue Jays’ was ranked 19th (and followed by their epic fail of a draft), so I’d say an argument can at least be made that they are on similar footing.
The only real argument I see that you have is the Jays have more young, better major league ready pitching (Romero and Rzepil…Rzepcyks…Rzepcyk…just Romero, just Romero) than the Orioles had (Guthrie, Olson, Loewen, Liz, Cabrera). But we of course don’t know yet how Toronto’s pitching will shake out.
So: are they the same situation? No. But it’s ballparkable. And that’s all I was saying. God.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
Hmm - I might stand corrected
I can’t believe our farm system wasn’t ranked lower than that.
I guess I also thought a lot more of those no-name starters that they used this year were younger/prospects (Romero, Cecil, Richmond, Tallet, Rzipper, Purcey, Jansen, etc), but actually looking at their ages and stats maybe they are just journeyman minor leaguers for the most part.
So yeah they are/were both some dogshit organizations.
Makes one shudder to think
there were 14 teams with even worse farm systems than the O’s before Andy MacPhail took over.
"(Brock Lesnar) is never in good spirits and he's not in good spirits now." - Dana White
Did I just see
the cons of trading draft picks? The fact that the MLB hasn’t allowed this yet is a disgrace. The MLB draft is already pretty fun to watch, but this will make it better, and baseball will be more competitive.

no.
please do not allow the kansas city royals and houston astros to trade their draft picks. please. trust me. it’s better this way.
It's not like
the Royals are actively trying to lose. Nobody gets into the business to lose. So if they traded their draft picks, they would probably get value back (or lose their jobs). Draft pick trading will happen, and it will be a very, very good thing indeed.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
on the other hand,
we have observable reality, where the Kansas City Royals traded two top pitching prospects for Yuniesky “Worst Player in the American League” Betancourt then turned around and extended the man responsible for five years. they could hardly run a worse ship even if they were trying to lose
Rebuilding the base
It is depressing that when AM was hired, he had to build a team almost from scratch. He had little talent in the majors and almost nothing in the minors. Years and Years of wasted draft picks and stupid trades. But, we are making progress now. We are on the verge of mediocrity. Who knows, in a couple of years we may actually be good. I wish we had a few more position prospects in the minors, but AM has done a fine job of rebuilding.

pretty much
They’ll probably need pitching, he’ll be the best available, and nobody else will be able to come anywhere close to the Yankees’ eventual offer. And he’s bestest friends ever with Sabathia. That shit is basically set in stone right now.
I hate baseball sometimes.
"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"
Lee will be 33 in 2011
If the Yankees sign him to a five year + deal at $20+ million, I’ll be all for it.
if lee has a good year
factoring in salary inflation, we’re talking 23+ million per, easy; but i mean, most regression models for guys like cliff lee have him turning into a decent back of the rotation guy by age 36-37, so if you don’t consider the money like the yankees seem to be able to, it’s still a decent deal for them
Ugh
I want the season to start…oh well. Who here thinks the Orioles should at least try and make an offer to Matt Holliday? I’m not saying we will get him, but it wouldn’t hurt to negotiate. I’m sure we’ve got the money :)

Nolan Reimold can give us 90% of Matt Holliday’s production for 10% of the cost, and he isn’t represented by the devil incarnate.

FCC to propose closing loophole on sports
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB126090010270692279.html?mod=rss_US_News&mg=com-wsj
WASHINGTON – Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski will propose prohibiting cable operators from withholding broadcasts of local sporting events from satellite TV providers and other rivals.
The FCC’s Media Bureau plans to circulate an order to the other FCC commissioners Wednesday, an FCC official said. It would close the so-called “terrestrial loophole” that has been used by cable companies including Comcast Corp., Cox Communications Inc. and Cablevision Systems Corp. to withhold local sports channels from rivals.
The move would be a significant victory for Dish Network Corp., DirecTV Group Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and AT&T Inc., all of whom …
