MacPhail satisfied for now | orioles.com: News
Andy MacPhail likely made his biggest splashes of the offseason over the last couple of weeks, when he traded for Kevin Millwood, signed Mike Gonzalez to a two-year deal and reached agreement on a one-year pact with Garrett Atkins. Now he rests. - zknower
Andy MacPhail talks about Billy Rowell

Guts' spot in the rotation
Roch Kubatko ponders the order of the rotation, speculating Millwood will be the #1 and Guthrie the #2. My opinion? Put them in whatever order you want, Matusz will be the ace of the rotation by the all star break. -Stacey
Red Sox 3B Lowell to have thumb surgery
The rumored trade between the Rangers and Red Sox has been halted with the news that Mike Lowell needs surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb. The Red Sox just can't get rid of this guy. -Stacey
Reds give 3B Scott Rolen 2-year extension

In case you want to relive when the Orioles were actually good.
"I'd like to do something. We all would here," he added. "As I've said before, you just don't want to do anything stupid that you're thinking in May, 'What in the God's green earth was I thinking about?'" - Andy MacPhail 12/8/09
That Schmuck article amazes me.
He full acknowledges that the right move and the exciting move are not the same thing. And then advocates against “the right moves.” How can you possibly frame an argument in a way the ends up with you arguing the wrong decision?
No, Peter.
but the fans want to see the Orioles sign a superstar to help them forget the past 12 years
The true fans of the team want to see the Orioles win games. As soon as possible, and for as long a possible. Winning games and signing a “superstar” are not mutually exclusive, but the latter is not a guarantee of the former, either. Please see Sammy Sosa for reference.
Not all of us are overgrown babies who see everything in terms of hanging out with celebrities. Not all of us are so impatient that we felt the orioles should trade away pitching prospects for Dan Uggla.

I'm not even arguing his point anymore, just his argument structure.
He starts out by essentially conceding that McPhail is making the right moves. and then says that he’s wrong for doing it. And he gets paid to write how?
The true fans of the team want to see the Orioles win games. As soon as possible
I’m just curious, are you happy with 81 or 82 wins ASAP? Or win enough games ASAP to make a playoff push? The former is lowered expectations due to years of watching pitiful baseball. It’s a goal that I’d like to see the O’s achieve, and they may in a year or two, but it’s not really a major accomplishment that should get fans overly excited (note that I said overly). We’ve already received an implicit message to wait until 2010 for the next installment of the ‘plan’. Now that the plan is beyond bringing in youth by trading away players that had to go, we’re hearing about waiting for more prospects to come up and fill the voids. That’s not likely to get to the ‘compete’ part of the plan time soon. If your goal is compete ASAP (2011?), it is certainly not expressing impatience to say that what we are hearing isn’t really all that convincing.
Seems to me he says that the O’s are making the right moves for this team at this point in time, but it is understandable for fans to want to see a competitive team. He doesn’t contradict himself. The jury is still out as to whether MacPhail’s “plan” is to field a team that wins more games than it loses or to field a competitive team. Or perhaps his plan will only field a team that wins more than it loses, someday. Somewhere along the line the very conservative MacPhail will need to make some bold moves. We don’t know if he’ll do it. Schmuck says we’ll obviously have to wait until next year. In the meanwhile, fans can get all excited about that 81st win. 2009 is all about seeing if the youngins can get there. Hopefully next year MacPhail and Angelos will be under pressure to make the team competitive, not just an above .500 team. In the meanwhile, I can understand the mindset of any fan who is sitting on the fence waiting to see if the O’s really intend to compete.
Signing a superstar for the sake of exciting your fanbase =/= fielding a competitive team
Schmuck wants to see them make a big flashy move because he’s bored and doesn’t actually know how to write about baseball.

SI says Team in mix for Adrian Gonzalez and has chips to get it done. So get it done! Any kid not named Matusz or Wieters best like SoCal.

Why would we trade pieces we need?
That’s two of our top five young pitchers you’re willing to send away. Without Arrieta, Britton and Erbe we aren’t likely to be a contender with or without Gonzalez.
I am relying on
1) Matusz and Tillman to both be good.
2)Bergesen to be adequate.
3)The one left out of Arrieta/Britton to be decent.
4)The front office to be able to fill the last hole until one of our younger prospects is ready (and there are many of them that you know a lot about).
So that leaves Matusz, Tillman, Bergesen, Millwood, and Guthrie to start the season. We still have one of our prized youngsters out of Jake and Zach. We have plenty more on the way and another high draft pick this year. My idea really isn’t unreasonable if San Diego would fall for it!

I think it is unwise to rely on those things..
…if for no other reason than health.
But more to the point, even if all those things happen, we end up with a rotation that is worse than our competition. The rotations of our competitors:
Yankees: Sabathia/Burnett/Pettite/Joba?/Hughes?
Red Sox: Beckett/Lester/Lackey/Matzuzaka/Buchholz
Rays: Shields/Garza/Niemann/Price/Davis
We need at least three excellent starters to compete/eclipse our competitors in pitching. We have five pitchers with that ceiling in our high minors or majors: Matusz, Tillman, Arrieta, Erbe and Britton. As it stands, our odds of getting three excellent starters out of those five are not great. Since the three excellent starters is essential for us to compete, I can’t see how shortening those odds does anything but make it less likely we will contend, A-Gone or no A-Gone. From a talent perspective, your deal is good for us. From an organizational needs standpoint, I don’t feel it makes sense at all.
Fair enough
But we are gonna have to find a way to get the bat we need…and soon (like next off-season).

I'd love to see Gonzalez at first
but i just dont see San Diego agreeing to a deal that makes sense for us.
How about Hernandez, Erbe and Pie? They get a pitcher for this season, one for next and solve their center field problem. If that’s still not enough, they can have Snyder.

Gonzalez price tag
Would involve at least one of:
Markakis
Jones,
Wieters,
Matusz
and a few others to fill out the deal. It just doesn’t make sense for us.

Gonzalez price tag isn't worth it, then.
Fuck that noise.

You might be right
But I’m not convinced. They can ask for any of those but we can offer what we want. They asked for Jacoby Ellsbury and the Sox didn’t bite. No reason we should have to give up any of those four.
Besides, in their own organization, Erbe would be their No. 1 pitching prospect. At least, that’s how I’d pitch it.
by mystery tramp on Dec 21, 2009 9:55 AM EST up reply actions
Not even close
Hernandez, Erbe, and Pie would be the back end of that deal. Its going to take at least Matusz or Tillman, plus one other top prospect

Saw it on TV a couple of weeks ago
It had probably been 10 years since I’d actually sat down and watched it. Always loved it when I was little, I was kinda surprised it still seemed good now that I’m older.
Though, when I was younger, I most looked forward to when he fends off the robbers. Two weeks ago I was most touched by the scene with the old neighbor at the church.

And yet
none of it counts in the fantasy league where I have him. Give this guy some real snaps!

You dont get Return TDs?
usually leagues don’t count return yards, but return TDs are almost always counted.
It does in salary cap football
he’s been kickin some ass for me in that league. This is the 1st year I ever played in a draft league. I almost picked him up, but I figured out real quick just how different it is.
Hey Orioles fans!
Just thought I’d drop by and tell you all how lucky y’all are to have Gonzalez. He’s one of the nicest baseball players I’ve ever met. He was always willing to stop and give autographs and take a picture with you.
Y’all will love him, I’m sure of it!

You aren't going to come back and lecture us about how we dont care about baseball if he stuggles and we criticize him, are you? lol
I’m sure Rosana is still a little sore about our attitude towards Pie.
Hah! No...
Because you’ll probably all want to strangle him very soon. ;)

For a second there, I thought you meant a different Gonzalez
Then I saw the quote from Ted Turner and I figured you must mean the Braves.
Thanks for stopping by to leave a nice comment.

Check out guys. :-D
But really, how do you guys feel about getting Garrett Atkins? Looking at who was playing 3B last year (Mora and Wigginton) it looks like a bit of an upgrade to me. Or is there a guy in the minors who should be playing 3B?
Or is there a guy in the minors who should be playing 3B?
Josh Bell. Which is why Atkins is only here on a one-year deal. I’m personally ok with it, but if you go back a few days to the thread where the signing was announced, theres quite a bit of debate about it.
So it's a stopgap.
Is Orioles management planning on bringing Josh Bell up at mid-season?

I think thats the best case scenario
He still has to prove himself at AAA, which is far from certain.
by the way.. can i take a picture of you?

haha
school’s the opposite of canceled at my college – our winter break started yesterday, but there’s still around 200 (out of 1500) students still here, stuck because of the snow. our administration was nice enough to cook breakfast and order dinner pizzas for us, but it’s still an annoying situation :-\
Billy Rowell
If Rowell goes to Bowie, I assume that it is sink or swim time for him. If he sinks, he will be released at the end of the season.
Yep.
And where the hell is he going to play? First base? So where is Brandon Waring playing?
All this and more, on the next Bowie Chronicles…dun dun dunnn…
by sickuvitall on Dec 21, 2009 12:43 AM EST up reply actions
doesn't AA have a DH?
otherwise I’m guessing they fit him in at one of the corners, or just deal with Waring at 3B. at this point I don’t think they care how bad his defense is, as long as he shows some signs of life at the plate.
