Major league baseball's best, worst farm systems | SI.com
Baseball America and SI have rated the 30 ML teams and the O's come in at the 6-15 range. Not much said about them, but at least they're not the Blue Jays. -Stacey

Trembley talks Winter Meetings - MASNsports.com

Opening Day 4-Pack | orioles.com: Tickets
The Orioles are once again selling the Opening Day 4-pack. It's how I've gotten my OD tickets for the past few years. I know OD tickets aren't that hard to come by, but $50 gets you an upper deck seat to OD plus 3 games, and $100 gets you a lower reserve seat to OD plus 3 games. -Stacey

Hot Stove News: Phillies Ink Polanco

Crede Flying Under The Radar Again?
FanGraphs takes a look at Joe Crede's value. His name has been mentioned as a possible 3B solution for the O's in 2010. What do you guys think? Worth it? -Stacey

For now, Jim Johnson is staying in the pen
Turns out the O's were discussing turning JJ back into a starter for 2010 but have decided against it. I'm glad about that. -Stacey

Nets Chase 1988 Orioles | For the public, by The Public
With their 18th consecutive loss to start the season, the Nets have set the NBA record, and are just 4 losses away from eclipsing the Orioles for all four major sports. Of course, the Nets only play 82 games, so 18 losses to start the year is much worse than 21 in the MLB. -Stacey

Perhaps the laws of physics cease to exist on your stove. Were these magic grits? Did you buy them from the same guy who sold Jack his Open Thread?

The important question

that we don’t know the answer to is “what do the Orioles think Josh Bell’s timeframe is going to be?” which is a secondary question to “Are the Orioles going to insist that Bell become a strong right-handed hitter, or are they going to give up on the switch-hitting?”. Because if he’s going to be a left-handed hitting third baseman, he could conceivably be up by the beginning of June, but if he’s going to put the work in at AAA to bring his right handed swing around, it might not be until September that we see him.

That the Orioles are at least kicking the tires on basically every third base option is hardly illuminating to their Bell design.

by Andrew @ TLC on Dec 4, 2009 8:54 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Crede is not an improvement

on anything. Andino would be better. Hell, give Scot Moore another chance. But not Crede. He simply can’t hit. If the Orioles want a 3B for awhile, why not Glaus? He can hit right handed for power and play some 1B, too.

by fuddnelson on Dec 4, 2009 8:51 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

So you're saying Wiggy > Crede

because, no.

Crede (and Feliz and Beltre) are all plus defenders. Mora was an averageish defender, and Wiggy is far from average with the glove. Defense is going to be important behind our young pitching staff, esp GB guys like BB and JJ.

I’m not saying they are the answer, but they would be good cheap (prob not in Beltre’s case) temporary stopgaps. I have high hopes for Bell but not so high that I think he’s going to be mashing MLB pitching in 2010.

On the other end of the spectrum, Glaus used to be able to hit, but didn’t really prove it in his rehab assignments. 33% K rate, .390 SLG in 65 PA in AAA! That said, it could be worth a flyer. Both Crede and Glaus are injury risks, so they should sign 1 year incentive deals. And if they get injured or suck, we have a backup plan for that.

by CoachOfEarl on Dec 4, 2009 11:27 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Bell shouldn't be the "backup plan"

Bell is our future, for good or ill, at third base (at least over the next three or four years) and unless bringing in Beltre or Crede or Feliz or whoever – in conjunction with other moves – puts the Orioles into the wild card mix in 2010, the plan ought to be to have Bell getting reps at the major league level in anticipation for him to be breaking out in 2011. Getting his experience in really shouldn’t be the backup plan to adding 3 or 4 wins.

"I like baseball, movies, good clothes, whiskey, fast cars ... and you. What else you need to know?"

by Andrew @ TLC on Dec 4, 2009 1:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I meant for next year

Bell is our future, but not our immediate future.

Bringing in a FA 3B or 1B for short term gives us wins before Bell/Snyder are ready to play with the big boys. I would like more wins. If the FAs and the future players are all having successful years, trade the FAs for prospects or whatever we can get, and call up the kids. It would be a good problem to have.

by CoachOfEarl on Dec 4, 2009 5:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm big on board the Glaus train.

Low risk, high reward kind of thing. He’s not the long-term answer, but he could pay big dividends in the short term & be handy to have around.

Wow

I can’t decide whether I want the Nets to go 0-22 or to fall just short. There’s some bizarre badge of honor in having the worst start ever by a pro sports team in the USA. Then again, as Orioles fans, we probably all have Stockholm Syndrome.

I can't decide

On the one hand, i’d love for that distinction to belong to someone else. However, the Nets are a good organization and this is a product of them actually trying to rebuild and being hit hard by injuries at the same time. The Nets have a future while the Knicks have nothing but a prayer that they’ll land LeBron, but the Nets are taking all the scrutiny. Lawrence Frank is a great guy and he didn’t deserve to lose his job. That team just isn’t built to win right now and I feel terrible for them.

Then again, I HATE basketball, so whatever.

huh?

I’m guessing you are talking about the new meadowlands complex, but there is no new arena for the Nets there. They play in the Izod center (which used to be Continental arena, which used to be Byrne arena) and they are supposed to be moving to Brooklyn, though when that happens is anybody’s guess (now its supposed to be the 2011 season).

I wouldn't want

the Nets to go 0-22, if 1988 really was the start of something great for the Orioles. Then we could’ve always pointed back to that team that started 0-21 and we can say after that was the turning point. I mean the “Why Not” 1989 season must’ve been fun but it would be seven more years before the Orioles did something serious.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

My niece was born in NC, but her parents both moved there from NJ, as well as her grand parents. If she grows up and identifies more with her family’s culture, she’ll be more northerner. If she identifies with her friends more, she’ll be more southern.

Its different because she won’t ever “be fron NJ”, but its the same idea.

well...

the fact that the cow was raised to be slaughtered and is readily available to purchase without personally killing it vs. the fact that the deer was alive in the wilderness and completely free of human interaction until someone came along with a rifle and shot it in the heart while it was either searching for food or running for it’s life.

And to be clear, some hunting is necessary, because of over population. Then again, they wouldnt be over populated if we didnt move in and take away all their living space, so that doesn’t really make randomly killing animals cool. Nor would I ever be okay with taking pleasure from it.

by daveh873 on Dec 4, 2009 11:54 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Someone personally kills it

I’d say that an argument could be made that it’s worse for the cow being raised to be slaughtered. You’re saying it’s better than the deer who is free its entire life? I don’t know.

But the counter argument

is that the cow’s slaughter is controlled and when done right is very quick and painless. That being said, it’s often not done right or quickly.

I agree they are both objectionable from my perspective.

How much do you think Mora will sign for?

I just noticed on fangraphs (maybe I missed it posted here somewhere), that Bill James is projecting a .750 OPS/14 hrs/60 RBI from him. We’re probably not going to get a hell of lot more than that (defensively either) from any of the scrub FAs.

by O'sFan21 on Dec 4, 2009 11:21 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

it's definitely emotional, yes

but it’s also rational. it’s not just about stats. it’s about culture of the clubhouse. Mora became a prima donna last season, and i don’t want Nolan Reimold to learn about “surprise bunting” when you decide all by yourself that “you think it will help the team to win”.

I will always love Melvin

And maybe his production could be worth it, but he has no place on the Orioles anymore. He’s old culture.

My brother-in-law is convinced he’ll be an O next year. He think it’ll get close to ST, the O’s won’t have a 3B, Melvin won’t have a job, and they’ll get back together.

defensively yes

Crede, Beltre, Glaus (if he’s healthy), and Feliz are all significantly better defenders than Mora, who at this point is probably below league average.

I don’t think Mora is going to be waiting for a job until Spring Training. if Aaron Miles can get a 2 year contract as a utility player (as he did last season), I’m sure some contending team out there will give Mora a contract offer well before April.

by ugen64 on Dec 4, 2009 2:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

ZIPs is projecting .722 OPS (85 OPS+) from Mora. And it’s projecting 90 OPS+ from Scott Moore. I would rather give the job to Scott Moore, although I don’t think Moore will hit anywhere close to a 90 OPS+.

Here's a question....

…(I hope everyone had a nice holiday btw) – how much of Gary Matthews Jr’s contract would you be willing to take on if it brought Brandon Wood to the O’s?

The Angels are “working hard” to unload Matthews to clear salary space, and the Orioles have it to burn. Meanwhile, Wood is out of options and the Angels have Erick Aybar, Macier Izturis and Howie Kendrick to fill their middle infield spots already.

Matthews would hold negative value for the Orioles, of course – we have no need for another outfielder, much less one who isn’t worth much with the bat or the glove. But Wood can play all four infield positions and offers the possibility of elite right-handed power from the shortstop position, represents another option at third or first, and remains cost-controlled. The downsides are that he is out of options and his skill with the bat hasn’t exactly emerged in brief major league stints. Matthews is owed $23.5m over the next two years, but we could end up cutting him and eating the money, or it could free us up to deal Pie for someone.

I don’t know much about Brandon Wood but I would be very unhappy to see Matthews back.

by Steve. on Dec 4, 2009 1:15 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Brandon Wood is an Angels prospect

In 2005 he had one of the best minor league seasons in history in High-A ball. He was the #3 prospect in baseball in 2006 and the #8 prospect in baseball in 2007. He’s played primarily at shortstop but is not an elite defender at the position, despite having elite arm strength. However, he has not excelled in the majors, hitting .192/.222/.313 in 224 at bats over three seasons. But those numbers show a severe lack of regular playing time, much like Felix Pie.

I have no desire to see Sarge back either. But it would be a chance to obtain a former top ten prospect at a key position both for a contending team and in terms of organizational need. Wood will be cheap for many years, so if we took on say $10m or $15m of Matthews deal, we could simply release him and be paying the cash straight up to obtain Wood.

that"s a fair question

it would take game fences and they are cost prohibitive. most farmers don’t fence land with crops like wheat, corn, etc. my parents raise whitetails (not for hunting) so I don’t deer hunt but I do know the high fences used to protect them from other predators are really expensive.

it’s cost prohibitive for farmers to build fences around all of their property to keep hogs in particular out of their crops. if this were a requirement you would see the crop production in the southern US cut drastically. of course, i’m sure the gov’t would pass another amazing stimulus package that would save us all.

A human is a human

You can’t be intellectually honest and compare humans and animals the way you just did. Anthropomorphizing animals to have human feelings, thoughts, hopes, dreams, and abilities by equally comparing the death of a feral hog to that of a human being doesn’t work.

And since when is building a fence to bisect the landscape “doing it the right way?” Just take a look at this fence:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/19/AR2008041900942.html

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN2421670420080325

It’s on a much larger scale, sure. But you don’t restrict the movement of all wildlife to deal with a single threat – that doesn’t make much sense.

by PhilR8 on Dec 4, 2009 9:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

thats not what I was getting at at all

but ok. Like I said, when he said it’s not cost effective so they kill them, thats the thought that popped into my head. I wasn’t saying thats what it was equal to. Also, how is protecting, say, a farm from predators with a fence equal to "restricting the movement of all wildlife? And how does it make less sense than taking something’s life?

by daveh873 on Dec 5, 2009 1:34 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You equated the value of the life of a wild hog to the value of the life of a human

If that’s not what you meant, fine. But that’s what you said. It’s not something I can envision someone saying with a straight face.

Re: fences: so every farmer puts up a fence, like maybe a continent-wide fence to keep out rabbits, and wilfelife migration patterns are disrupted and populations dwindle.

It’s really curious to me, who is very supportive of local, sustainable solutions for the future of this country – responsible, environmentally-conscious initiatives like community farming, animal husbandry, and local industry – that you guys are bent out of shape over measures taken to protect what could be community resources.

What’s the difference between a farmer killing a hog he finds eating his crops, and that same farmer spearheading an initiative to re-introduce the natural predators of the same hog back into the environment? In both cases, hogs will die and humans will have set the deaths into motion. In both cases, the hog is eaten.

I’m an animal lover, but the emphasis placed on the life of an animal over the lives of humans doesn’t make sense to me.

First of all, not all farmers are out there killing shit that eats their crops, so the ones that either aren’t having a problem or have found other ways of dealing with it almost definitely won’t invest in a fence. For the ones who it is a problem, so they put up a fence. The country has tons of non-farm land so I don’t think there’s going to be some giant fence spanning the continent and interupting migration patterns.

by O'sFan21 on Dec 5, 2009 2:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually

the fencing of the American West is a huge problem. I don’t know much about it myself but my brother is studying as an environmental lawyer.

In reality there really is only a tiny fraction of open land left, and I know the fencing has seriously caused problems in the yellowstone region just outside the park. It sounds unbelievable but it’s really amazing how much we’ve changed things.

I’m with you and against you on hunting. I hate it, and I hate even more the idea of someone enjoying it. When I go out “shooting” it’s with a camera, But hunting does serve some valuable purposes and in an overall environmental scheme, hunters can actually be really strong conservationists.

by Steve. on Dec 5, 2009 7:02 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ok

If that’s really the case then we shouldn’t have fences, but it’s just hard for me to believe that killing 1 out of x number of animals that come in and eat crops is really doing anything to protect crops.

not many farmers that i know worry about fencing. they just collect their insurance and gov’t check and go on. I’ve killed like 3 hogs in my life ao whatever. my response to your fence question was thast it just isn’t feasible considering the cost to the landowner.

Additionally

killing a few out of the however many animals actually eat the crops really isn’t an effective way to protect the crops, is it? Unless you can hire a security force to stand watch over the entire perimeter of the fields, I would assume many of the wild animals (that are such a problem that you have to and are able to successfully kill some) would get in and eat the shit anyways.

What exactly is enjoyable about taking a living thing’s life? There is something perversely interesting about that sort of thing

Example: Drunk guys find an entire bee hive colony swarming on a swingset in their backyard. Bees that most likely had flown away from a local apiary or something. So what do they do – call some sort of expert to safely remove the colony?

See for yourself:

Plus

Bugs can go to hell. Not that I kill ants or anything, but I love killing flies, wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets. I have one of those irrational fears of bees – when a bee starts buzzing around me I freeze up and get all flushed and scared. So of course the logical response to an irrational fear is to kill kill kill! I don’t harm honey bees/bumble bees/any sort of good bee, but wasps and the like are headed straight to hell if they get anywhere near me.

One thing I’m not afraid of is spiders – in fact, I like watching spiders. Once I was walking past the window in my room and saw a bug caught in a spider web. It was like this bigass moth that much have just gotten stuck because it was fighting for its life. So I stopped to watch and sure enough, this big-ass spider comes out of the shadows and starts wrapping the moth in sticky gooey webbing, and then eventually starts biting the shit out of it. I was rooting for the spider the entire time.

A coworker of mine has to have an MRI done soon

She did artsy stuff in college, which included welding metal sculptures. Before she gets the MRI, she has to have some sort of test performed to make sure she doesn’t have any metal particles in her eyes from when she welded. She made it seem like anyone who has ever welded has to have this test before they can receive an MRI. Having tiny metal filing ripped out of your eyeballs doesn’t sound all that nice.

I’ve got plenty of friends that hunt (almost exclusively water fowl, but occasionally deer) for fun. However, they also eat everything they kill. I’m curious as to your stance on that. I mean, it’s not like they need to be hunting to survive, but they do eat everything. At the same time, it’s an activity they all seem to love.

I went goose hunting once on the shore. I didn’t kill anything, and being up at 5 in the freezing cold and hungover as fuck wasn’t that enjoyable for me, but the experience was a pretty good time. Hard to quantify, but it was kind of fun. I’d do it again.

Fishing, on the other hand, is awesome. Salt water, fresh water, it’s all good. I’ll eat most of what I catch, and release what I don’t.

Boxing/martial arts are not even remotely comparable. Both parties enter into the match of their own free will, are equiped to defend themselves/inflict equal punishment, and are rewarded for their competing. What deer chooses to partake in the hunt? how are the equiped to defend themselves/inflict equal punishment? And how are they rewarded for partaking? I don’t hunt but I don’t think it’s the killing per se hunters find fun. It’s the hunt itself. That’s where the enjoyment comes. For example, if all deers suddenly became slow and sought out hunters, hunting would cease to become fun. Then you’re just a sick fuck who likes to kill animals for the sake of killing animals.

Yeah, I can't see a multi-year deal, either.

I’d guess we’d see something along the lines of $4-5M with a $4-5M 2011 club option (probably with a $.5M buyout). That sounds fine to me; the main thing is it being a one-year deal, and I can’t see Feliz drawing a multi-year deal anywhere.

I’m a little worried about how well he’ll hit in the AL East, since his bat is already pretty mediocre, but if he’s just a little better than Mora was last year and is significantly better with the glove, he’ll work out pretty well. It’s also worth noting that he tends to be a first-half hitter, which’ll make it that much easier to bring up Bell sometime after the All-Star break.

i guess this means they expect boras to refuse arbitration for beltre

seems strange that figgins would head into a situation where he doesn’t have 3b job locked down

by b_duardo on Dec 4, 2009 3:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

no way Beltre accepts

But I guess even if he did, Figgins can play a lot of positions.

would he get like 12 in arb?

that’s better than he’s going to get on a per-year basis anywhere

yeah but he's probably looking for multi-years

Right

but from his perspective, if he could sign a 1 year/$12 M contract or sign a 3 year $8 M contract, isn’t the first preferable? Let’s say he signs the one year deal and does the same or worse than he did this past year (probably pretty unlikely). He’d probably be looking at a two year deal for $6 per year or something right? That’s the same as the 3 year 24 M contract. Alternatively, if he rebounds and has a good year he could be looking at a 3-4 year $36-40 M contract after that.

I guess

Boras clients don’t usually take arbitration though. Varitek turned down a large arbitration amount and ended up signing for less last year. That’s how it works with that guy.

I'd imagine....

they would play Beltre at 3B, Figgins at 2B, and try to trade Jose Lopez (whose right-handed power doesn’t play very well in Safeco Park).

I kinda like

the fact that there is a 3B in our system ranked between guys like Britton and Erbe. I really like that we got him for a reliever.

Do the recent

signings of Polanco and Sctaro and imminent signing of Figgins improve the Os odds of signing Beltre or does it all depend on the asking price?

As of right now

Boras is asking 10mil/yr. It’s Boras so you know he’ll start it absurdly high, but if it’s near that i’m not sure he’s the right guy for the O’s.

by daveh873 on Dec 4, 2009 9:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

but yea...

now that other teams are out of the running, maybe the price comes down.

by daveh873 on Dec 4, 2009 9:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

there's still teams out there who might give him a long-term deal

the Twins, White Sox (if they play Teahen in OF), Angels (if they don’t want to start Wood), Cardinals, and Giants (moving Sandoval to 1B) are all contenders that need a third baseman. the Giants were always my pick for Beltre – I could see Brian Sabean giving him a Renteria-like contract.

B+ for Britton!

Britton is higher than I thought.
