Around SBN: MLB Trade Deadline: Phils, Astros complete Roy Oswalt deal

Is Today the Day for Luuuuuuuuuuke?

Is now the time to trade Luke Scott?

With Nolan Reimold a solid option for the DH position and Felix Pie a competent replacement in left, although I wonder who would serve as a forth outfielder, does it make sense to put feelers out there for Luke Scott?

Star-divide

We knew it would happen some time.  Luke Scott was brought over from the Astros and done a solid job taking over in left, then DH, then first base.  He's hit homers and doubles and even had a game or two where he exceeded everyone's expectations.  But is his time in Baltimore up?

It seems like this might be the season.  We've talked about it before.  For the last two seasons rumors were flying left and right that Scott would, neigh, should be traded.  That his value would never be higher.  That he was an arbitration eligible player and under team control - for another 2 seasons, I believe.

The response, usually, was that he wouldn't net enough.  Fans would clamor that he could yield "maybe 2 prospects", which was crazy, and that there were "tons of teams" that wanted him.  Yeah, well, a reliever and a spare part makes sense.  Maybe even a Manny Delcarmen- or Brian Wilson-type of guy seems like the logical centerpiece of such a deal.

Last season, it sounded like the Braves were a perfect option as they needed a power bat in the outfield.  Does that finally happen?  There were rumblings about the Rays as well.  But what team makes sense?

Is it time?

It is time

to trade Luke. He has value, but does not fit the Orioles needs. He should be packaged along with others for a cleanup hitter who can play 1B. That is IMO the Orioles biggest need. They have possible answers to their other needs, but there isn’t a cleanup hitter or 1B in sight. Trade for one.

Well, they should trade him if the return is worth it

And they should keep him if he isn’t. He’s valuable, he’s cheap, we have him for two more years. We have no need for a Wilson or Delcarmen type in any case, so why bother?

My fantasy is that we deal Scott to the Braves for Derek Lowe, Craig Kimbrel, and fifteen million (to offset Lowe’s contract). I think that would be a fair deal that would help both teams.

by James F on Dec 6, 2009 11:36 PM EST reply actions

I fail to understand why that trade works for the Braves aside for giving them salary relief.

by Dr Orpheus on Dec 6, 2009 11:58 PM EST up reply actions

exactly

they have 6 starting pitchers:

Kawakami
Lowe
Vazquez
Jurrjens
Tommy Hanson
Tim Hudson

of these players, Jurrjens and Hanson are extremely valuable, young, cost-controlled, etc. Vazquez has only 1 year left on his deal so there’s no reason to trade him now – might as well wait and see if you’re competitive in July. the Braves just signed Hudson to a new contract, and anyway he wouldn’t fetch much in return because of injury concerns. Between Kawakami and Lowe, it’s just an issue of money – Kawakami is relatively cheap, while Lowe has a bad contract.

so yeah, all they want by getting rid of Lowe is salary relief. that said, I’ve heard that they want a right-handed power bat, which Scott obviously doesn’t satisfy.

by ugen64 on Dec 7, 2009 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

He's not right handed

But the whole right-handed power bat thing doesn’t make all that much sense anyways. They have a good right-handed platoon bat in Matt Diaz. They aren’t going to pay enough to get Bay or Holliday or to trade for Nelson Cruz.

But like I said, it is my fantasy trade – not something I really believe will happen.

Craig Kimbrel

is a right-handed relief pitching prospect. amazing k-rate, terrible control. as a 21 year old last season, he shot up from low-A to AAA. rated B by Sickels. his career minor league stats:

1.99 ERA in 73 G, 95.1 IP, 15.0 K/9, 5.7 BB/9, 0.2 HR/9, 54.9 GB%

I'd be thrilled

Than Pie could play LF and that would improve the defense.

If Scott is to go...

I will miss him dearly. I’d just like to remind everyone of that amazing time period last season where, every game, the expectation was at least one home run from him. I mean, when he’s hot, he’s on fire. That was a glorious time. :)

The time has come

I have grown to like Luke Scott, though I admit not being his biggest fan at first, or at least not seeing the point of him on the team. If there is not a market for him, you keep him (something I fear, and something I think happened to Huff daddy last year). However, if you can get a Sherrill-esque return for him, you pull the trigger. Of course, he could still be valuable in a couple seasons, so it would have to be a decent prospect at a position of need (you know, maybe a fucking shortstop would be nice).

Does he actually have value?

I know we like to think he does and it’s fun to say Luuuuuuke and all. But he’s a very hot and cold, streaky hitter and that’s pretty much his entire game. I’d say a one dimensional player, but that’s not even true given how on and off he is – more a half a dimensional player. I’m not sure how much that’s going to get for us.

by Jonny Pops on Dec 8, 2009 8:50 AM EST reply actions

You never know

He would be a solid guy off the bench, I’d bet.

Remember what happened with Flatbreezy. Talk about one-dimensional, he is a LOOGY that closed and didn’t do a great job. He netted this team two solid prospects.

by Dr Orpheus on Dec 8, 2009 9:29 AM EST up reply actions

He actually may have some decent value for us as the team currently sits, but if we go out and get a guy like Delgado or another power bat for 1B or 3B, I don’t see as much of a need for him. He is an excellent guy to have coming off of the bench for a contending team or in the NL, but right now he may have more value in trade for us. I wouldn’t mind getting some strong relievers for him, but IMO rather than shooting for relief prospects, we should be aiming for young ML relievers. We have enough relief prospects, we need someone solid and proven. In the next year or so, we will be able to have or bring up, Hernandez, Berken, Mickolio, Perrault, Wilfrido Perez, Gamboa, and Lebron.

by QBsIllest1 on Dec 8, 2009 10:37 AM EST up reply actions

He could land a decent prospect but nothing special. And, according to UZR, he’s an above average fielder wise so he’s not a one dimensional player.

You’ve gotta at least concede that he’s an OK fielder. If so, he’s decent pick up for a team looking for a LF. He’s under control for several seasons, decent power, decent glove, and good guy. That should be worth one B prospect.

hahah well it is pretty bullshit

they make it sound like guys such as luke scott and screech are actually good players

by twistedlogic on Dec 8, 2009 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

well, they never said screech is a good player

Read the article. They said he’s undervalued because he’s a decent player at a great price. And Luke is a good player. What’s up with this irrational hate of fangraphs? Some of their metrics aren’t perfect, but geez, did that site run over dog or something?

What about...

Luuuuuke for Rafael Soriano? The Braves were surprised that Soriano accepted arbitration and they don’t want to be saddled with his contract. It’s only one year, so the O’s could afford his arby price while letting the youngsters get another year of experience.

by sabertooth5185 on Dec 9, 2009 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

I would rather get a prospects for Luke than a free agent reliever.

Luke is a 115 OPS+ish type of player. That’s above average. Not above average for a DH though.
