What to do about the Delmarva rotation logjam?

It is no secret that Joe Jordan specifically targeted young pitchers in the 2009 draft last June.  He drafted(and signed) Matt Hobgood, Aaron Wirsch, Tim Berry, Ryan Berry, Randy Henry, Ashur Tolliver, Jake Cowan, Jarrett Martin, Cameron Coffey, to name a few(the best IMO).  For the most part, these pitchers are going to all start in the low minors, between GCL and Delmarva.  Only Ryan Berry will probably start in Fredrick.

Star-divide

So, in the 2009 draft we added more good pitching prospects to the low minors than most teams have altogether in the low minors.  The pitchers listed above will now join Bobby Bundy, Vito Fabrizio and Jesse Beal in our lower minor league system.  So now, we are left with a good problem, that will entail a tough decision that could effect these pitching prospects entire careers.  With these young kids, if you rush them into a level that is too difficult for them to succeed or find confidence, it can ruin them forever, remember pitchers are very fragile, even moreso when they are under 20 years old.  So, how do you think things will pan out?

I suspect:

Fredrick:  Ryan Berry, Fabrizio, Drake, Zagone

Delmarva: Hobgood, Beal, Bundy, Cowan, Tolliver

Aberdeen: Martin, Wirsch, Henry

Bluefield: Cam Coffey, David Baker

GCL:  Tim Berry

What do you guys think?  Remember also, the sooner the pitcher can pitch in fullseason ball(Delmarva) the better it is for their development.  On the same token, as mentioned above, we don't want to rush them to Delmarva because of that, and not allow the young arm enough time to get his full amount of development and crash and burn against tougher competition.....

There are other guys in the mix here as well, but I mostly just mentioned the prospects.

I definitly agree with you

Although I don’t think Berry will start at Frederick. I guess there is a slight chance, though.

I believe it was either AM or JJ that hinted at Berry possibly being able to start in Fredrick as long as he is healthy. Everyone was blown away by how good he was in the Intructionals. You gotta think, Rice faces tough competition, and in all of his seasons there he pitched well. You could say Rice is similar to that of Delmarva-ish competition with a wider range of competition….

Yeah I guess thats true

Arrieta started there so I guess Berry could. Do you have a link to where AM or JJ said that?

I don't think Hobgood starts at Delmarva

Look for him to go to Salisbury at mid-season.

This.

Although what will he be doing until Aberdeen gets going? Extended ST I guess…

Based off of comments I have read....

Hobby is going to Delmarva. If you are hesitant about it because of his rather mediocre production in Bluefield last year, don’t hold that opinion too strongly. It was well documented that he wasn’t in pitching shape in Bluefield and his stuff wasn’t at the same level it was when he was drafted. His fastball was in the 80’s and his curve wasn’t quite on point either. The main idea was for him to get some time against pro hitters regardless of what kind of shape he was in, so he didn’t look dominant, but he still did pretty well considering he wouldn’t rely on his stuff to beat the hitters. If he is back to throwing in the low to mid 90’s, he starts in Delmarva.

Joe Jordan says
MELESWSKI: Is it reasonable for him to start next year at Delmarva?

JORDAN: “I would think so. It depends on what kind of shape he comes in spring in. These guys will tell us what they are ready for. That decision will be made by David Stockstill and Dave Schmidt. My opinion is he’ll do everything he can to win a job on that club.”

I know I read some O’s official saying somewhere that Hobgood wouldn’t start in Delmarva, but I can’t find it now.

That is the article I remember reading, but I don’t remember hearing about any officials saying he shouldn’t start in Delmarva. I am not saying it wasn’t said, just saying I only heard that Jordan said he should. But on the same token, Jordan isn’t the one who makes that decision. IMO Aberdeen is unnecessary for him. It is not a big difference compared to Bluefield, and he would be better off IMO getting a full season under his belt, again as long as his stuff is back to normal…..

Townsend to Delmarva sounds about right, and if he does well there, promote him to Fredrick at the ASB. IMO Givens should go to Bluefield. His biggest questions are with the bat, and I don’t see much of a need to rush him, especially since both Aberdeen and Bluefield are short season programs. If he does well in Bluefield, promote him to Aberdeen or Delmarva at some point during the year. It really depends on how he looks when he comes back in the Spring. The low minors are gonna be very exciting this year, moreso than in a long long time…..

Yeah it should be exciting. I really, really like our 2009 draft class.

I do too. We picked up a tremendous amount of young talent this year. What I like the most is that the majority of these high ceiling arms that we took in the 09 draft haven’t even broken out yet. All these good reviews on our system don’t even account for this high ceiling talent we just drafted(except in depth). In a couple of years, this draft will have produced some elite prospects for us and make our system very strong.

IMO the question for the 10 draft is, Do we use the same strategy?

Personally, I love the overslotters we took last year, but with elite HS arms like Taillon Whitson, Cole and Covey that should be available to us, I would hate to pass them up for over slot talent later on. In 09 it was different because the only real elite talent out there was Strasburg and Ackley. Matzek was very good, but when asking for $6M bonuses, the talent didn’t match the asking price. In 2010, the talent will be better in our slot and Taillon will be worth a similar asking price.

Agreed. Our 2009 class was filled with high ceiling arms (Tolliver, Henry, Wirsch, Cowan etc.). I really hope we spend big in the draft next year though. I like Taillon and hope we can get him Ranaudo or Cole. And yes I think we should try the same strategy in 2010, but we really need some middle infielders and position players. I really want some sluggers in our system.

The thing is though, if we take Taillon, we won’t be able to sign the amount of overslotters as we did this past year. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Taillon’s asking price to be $8M. I would expect him to get somewhere in the $4-6M range. If that is the case, we would only be able to get a few other overslotters. BUT, since we did get so many overslotters in 09, I think we should be able to get a talent like Taillon in the system plus maybe another 2 very good overslot signers and we will have a better future system. With Taillon, you are looking at a kid who has a very strong chance at being a top 10 MLB prospect very shortly after the draft. Even without throwing a pro pitch, I could see him in the top 25 range……
