What starting pitcher do we want?

I am not convinced on Millwood, Penny is gone, Lowe (who I wanted a few years back is a lot of money), and knowing the history of us being able to land coveted players, i.e. Chapman, who do we really want and see ourselves even getting, keeping in mind that wanting and having a chance to get are two completely different things. Personally, I would like a Ben Sheets or Randy Wolf.

I just really hope that Macphail doesn't wait around for another Adam Eaton.

I like Rich Harden personally. I wouldn’t mind to get Bedard, but IMO Harden is a better choice. I would also rather take my chance on Ben Sheets. If both Harden and Sheets go elsewhere, then I would be all for acquiring Bedard in an incentice laden deal. The big thing with Bedard is that he is coming back from the worst injury of the 3 and there is always the chance that he doesn’t return to prior form. We have to remember, Spoone who would possibly be our top pitching prospect not named Matusz doesn’t even get consideration as an oriole top prospect anymore due labrum surgery, so I don’t exactly see why so many folks think he will be able to come back 100%, but I am willing to take my chances on him rather than guys like Millwood….Just my .02

well said

Or at least, I agree 100%

I would also add Duchscherer to the list. But all those 4 guys have high ceilings, something we should be after.

Duchscerer is a proven commodity

who we can get on the cheap. I want Justin, too.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I agree with this. I actually wanted to add him to the list of names I mentioned but was too lazy to look how to spell his name. He is certainly someone we should look into.

Halladay!

realistically: Bedard or Harden both sound pretty good.

I wouldn’t be opposed to Millwood but it better be cheap.

I just read that we apparently have itnerest in Kelvim Escobar who I believe also had labrum surgery. Apparently the Royals are interested in Pie, I wonder what it is we would be seeking with them…..

I'd love it...

but does he really do us any good if he can’t pitch until May or June?

According to the recent sun article

He’ll be ready mid-April.

He can pitch in mid-April but he may not be ready to pitch coming off of shoulder surgery.

I don't see why they wouldn't want him

even if he’s not available until May or June. What are the odds no starter is going to be awful/injured?

He’s a good insurance policy. But I wouldn’t count on a guy coming off of shoulder surgery in the immediate future.

Bullpen including?

I could really care less about Millwood. He had his time in Atlanta at the beginning of the decade. Bedard- while very good here in Baltimore- I seriously doubt will be just as good as before. Sheets? Had great years in Milwaukee, but is injured pretty much every season. I think he would be a big waste of money if he sits most of the season; then we’re right back to where we are now with a rotation filled with rookies and prospects with no vet besides Guthrie.

Harden? Maybe. I wouldn’t mind signing him. He was pretty decent in Oakland for a little bit, and looked great his first couple games with the Cubs. But the pitcher I REALLY want is Chapman. I know he seems unlikely (especially since he just changed agents and has to start from scratch). But I watched him in the WBC and he looked awesome. Flat out dominating. I think he would help us greatly and balance out a game with him starting when we play the Yankees or Red Sox.

Now for relievers, I would love to sign Mike Gonzalez. Or at least Rafael Soriano. Either or both would be great.

Only in my dreams could we get Chapman, Gonzalez, AND Soriano. But in 2003, we did get Miguel, Javy, and Palmeiro (granted, that was with different GM’s). But, who knows? We definitely got the financial room, and I think for the first time in 10 years, players wouldn’t mind coming to Baltimore. We’ve got a great young nucleus, and I really think the League is starting to take notice and think, “Hey, don’t be counting out the Birds in a few years.”

by Camden_33rd on Dec 9, 2009 3:53 AM EST reply actions

The problem IMO with Chapman is that he is more risky than any of the 3 pitchers mentioned here(Bedard, Harden or Sheets). This guy has a great fastball, but the rest of his arsenal is severely lagging behind and his command is way off. We are looking at 2 different pitching situations here. Chapman is a prospect nothing more at this point while Harden Sheets and Bedard are proven TOR starters. I would like to get Chapman as well, but not in place of a actual TOR starter. There is a very good chance that Chapman ends up being a bullpen arm.

And I do agree, I don’t really care for Millwood. I would love to get Sheets or Harden though regardless of their injury risk. If one of our SPs gets hurt, it just opens the door for one of our top SP prospects to step up IMO.

I also do agree that FAs aren’t gonna be AS hesitant to sign here though Baltimore is far from paradise. We are definitely headed in the right direction though, and in the next few years I think we will see a big turn around as far as FAs desires to come to Baltimore…..

Just a thought (not realities friend)

I read somewhere that the Padres would consider trading Kevin Correia because he’s arbitration eligible and might be too expensive.

What would it take to get Correia and Kevin Kouzmanoff? Probably way too much but that would sure be wild.

Oh, and people are saying that Kouzmanoff is impressive because he fills in at third until Bell is ready, gives left field another option, hits with power from the right side, and can be shifted to first or DH next season.

by Dr Orpheus on Dec 9, 2009 5:50 AM EST reply actions

Don't know much about Correia,

but Kouzmanoff would be a good addition. He doesn’t hit for a high average, but he does have some right handed power and a good glove at 3B. If we got Kouzmanoff, and he looks good at 3B, perhaps Josh Bell can be an option at 1B.

Is Correia a closer?

Pssh...

Figures. The O’s sign Millwood the day after I say I don’t care too much about him. lol

But, I’m not too upset about it. We needed a vet SP, and that’s what we got. The benefit of him being in his mid-30s is that he gives us a decent short term option until our baby Birds come up.

So I’m okay with it, I guess. Though I would have preferred to get Harden over Millwood. But still though, I gotta tip my hat to MacPhail. He has been arguably the best thing to happen to this franchise this decade! I’m supporting his vote to be inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame one day! haha

Hear me out...

I’m suggesting signing Chien-Ming Wang. Reasons?
1) Ground ball specialist
2) Solid (near fantastic) numbers before getting injured
3) Experience in big game situations
4) Taiwanese
5) His last name is Wang
6) Could sit as a #2 or 3 pitcher in the AL East

What say ye?

by Dr Orpheus on Dec 13, 2009 5:11 AM EST reply actions

?

Why not?

I’d be all for it. Granted, he did get injured. But who hasn’t? I think having Wang in our rotation would be a good thing. The only hesitancy that I would have is what would be his asking price?
