Four Orioles were chosen for extracurricular activities on Tuesday, when the final rosters were named for the participating nations in the World Baseball Classic.
Staff ace Jeremy Guthrie will play for Team USA, while shortstop Cesar Izturis and third baseman Melvin Mora were selected for Team Venezuela. Third-base prospect Mike Costanzo was chosen to play for Team Italy, the nation of his ancestors.

I was born in England
do they even have a team? Can I play for them? I picked up a bat once at a Sports Authority so I’m probably about the 6th best baseball player born in England.

Yeah, the Italian team really grinds my gears!
Basically, all you gotta have is an Italian name and you can play for the Italian team. And sometimes you don’t even need that – Robert Fick just recited a bunch of lines from Goodfellas and made the team easily.

The WBC rosters are worth a look
Among former O’s, Rodrigo Lopez (currently a FA) is taking the mound for Mexico. Joining him on the team are the brothers Hairston, which…they’re Mexican?
While Erik Bedard will not suit up for team Canada, they will have an ex-Oriole pitcher…the great Mike Johnson. Suddenly, I have a topic for my blog tonight.

Nope
I didn’t see the Chief on the roster. Oh, Karim Garcia’s there, too. Mexico’s a real sleeper.
