Mets beat O's in proper spring opener
via d.yimg.com
The O's spring training schedule kicked off proper in Fort Lauderdale today, and the Mets downed the Birds, 9-3.
With Guthrie in the WBC, Brad Hennessey got the first spring start. He left in the second inning with tightness in his right forearm and a sore elbow. And so it begins.
I like that spring training is here, but outside of guys getting injured and positional battles -- and we have the four open rotation spots -- this stuff really doesn't matter much. I used to stay excited for the first couple weeks, then I wanted the season to start. Now I just sort of want the season to start as soon as the exhibition games are going.

was it aired? didn’t catch it. I can’t wait for opening day, there’s a certain nostalgic feeling that comes with it, especially while I’m devouring a hot dog, can’t wait!!!

i'm psyched too
but don’t wish spring training away yet SC. it’s almost as much fun waking up every day and getting excited about one less day. soon enough we’ll be watching us lose 10-7 on our way to another 90+ loss season. but for now, we get updates on tillman and arrieta and matusz every day. we get to imagine just how great wieters might end up and believe that he might never get less than three hits per game, even though he’s obviously going to come up and hit a few rough patches. we get to make up fake 2011 lineups on the back of our grad school homework (roberts, jones, markakis, wieters, huff, reimold, scott, snyder (3b), ss?) and think about how many runs they might score. (and matusz, tillman, guthrie, arrieta, and hill in case you were wondering.)
we get to be distracted by march madness for a few weeks, making the time between now and opening day go just a little bit faster. we get the start of flag football season and drinking on sunday afternoons. we get st. patricks day. we get tiger coming back, we get maryland trying to make a run, and we get to try and figure out if ray is going to sign with the ravens. i say sit back and enjoy the anticipation of opening day.
I don't mind college basketball
but there will be no time spent by me watching college basketball when I can be watching the MLB. Silly priorities, I know, but….
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

You know the biggest difference under Andy?
And it started just last year…guys are fighting for spots in spring training. How many years in a row, was the entire lineup just the same as last year. Sure the pitching isn’t going to be good, but my god…at least this team is interesting than compared to the last decade. Guys are getting motivated to either perform or make way for someone else. Without Andy, we would still be fielding Jay Gibbons. Think about that for a second and try not to vomit…

Who’s fighting for a spot?
C: ZAUN
1B: Huff
2B: Roberts
3B: Mora
SS: Izturis
LF: Pie
CF: Jones
RF: Markakis
DH: Scott
Pretty cut and dry. If Pie totally can’t hack it, move Scott to LF, Huff to DH, Wigginton to 1B. Not much of a fight.
Without Andy, we would still be fielding Jay Gibbons.
This is an overstatement.

How's that an overstatment?
Gibbons has always been Angelos’ boy and god knows he hates eating a contract. Old Sid Thrift would never try to even float the idea of releasing Gibbons.
As for my other comments…hey its spring training…I am a little delusional…let me have my insanely out of touch comments…

Gibbons played and Mitchell Reported his way out of baseball. It had nothing to do with whose boy he might have been at that point. As for Thrift, nabbing Gibby in the Rule 5 and getting a couple decent years out of him was one of his very best moves, so of course Syd wouldn’t have wanted to release him back then. Post-Report, Gibbons showed up to spring training and just about every anonymous source and anonymous scout said he “can’t play without steroids.”

reimold
i swear this has nothing to do with his performance today, but nolan reimold needs to be our left fielder. pie is not going to hit enough and that’s that. i hope i’m wrong about that, but i doubt i am. i’m going to beat the reimold drum until they call him up because he’s gotten kind of buried by some guys who just aren’t that good.
i’m really hoping that reimold and wieters catch the same ride to baltimore in may.
S.T.
I try not to think about Jay Gibbons orBigbie or Danys Baez whoops he,s back.
I hope the pitching improves although it cant get any worse.
Oh, there's always room to get worse.
Always.
