Parrish to return
The Detroit Free Press is reporting that John Parrish, former O's great and likely hall of famer will be returning to the Orioles, and not the Tigers. The Tigers were apparently trying to sign him, and I didn't know the Orioles were even trying... As a matter of fact, I didn't know the Orioles were trying to sign Wigginton, what's up with all of this free agency signing without effort? Anyways Parrish was 1-1 with a 4.04 e.r.a. in 13 appearances, 6 starts and had a decent time in AAA going 10-1 with a 2.97 e.r.a... and no word on Looper except he prefers the NL.. This just gives us another person trying to get into the rotation if we are not able to sign Looper.

and we work in late Jan./early Feb.
That’s when the Sosa deal got done, when The Arsonists Steve were picked up…

Yeah we gave up the fruitful likes of Jerry Hairston Jr.

Don't forget
We also gave up the gritty, dirty, scrappy, gamer-y Mike Fontenot, who has personally willed the Cubs to several wins. Unfortunately, his powers only apply from April through September.

It's a minor league deal.
I don’t think he’s a serious threat to the signing of Looper.

Looper
According to Gerbil Rosenthal, Looper prefers the NL (so at least he’s a smart fellow). The Cardinals can’t afford to bring him back, the Dodgers have him on the back burner in case they can’t get Wolf, the Brewers are talking to his agent but are pessimistic about landing him, and the Pirates want him.
So yeah, if it’s among us, Pitt, and Milwaukee, I’d say we have a fair shot. I’m assuming the Dodgers close the deal with Wolf.

Would you rather hear jokes about Hendrickson starting? There are going to be at least a couple awful guys in the rotation.
If this is a minor league deal, then I have no problem with it. Parrish had a solid year last year

I'll almost guarantee
the top four in the order is Roberts (S), Markakis (L), Mora®, Huff (L)

I thought about doing it that way
1) Brian Roberts 2B
2) Nick Markakis RF
3) Melvin Mora 3B
4) Aubrey Huff 1B
5) Adam Jones CF
6) Luke Scott
7) ZAUN THE CATCHINATOR
8) Felix Pie LF
9) Cesar Izturis SS
It does have that really niceL/R/L/R/L that Dave loves, and given that Izturis, ZAUN and Roberts all our switch hitters, it actually means that we would have no consecutive batters who had to bat from the same side of the plate.
Still, Adam Jones is going to be SO much better than Melvin Mora that it’s going to make batting Mora at 3 a bit hard to justify. Adam Jones batted at 2 some last season. He still seems like a guy that gets way to many strikeouts to be a old school #2 hitter
by math_geek on Feb 4, 2009 6:09 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I really like Jones at 2
1) B-Rob (S)
2) Jones (R )
3) Nicky (L)
4) Huff (L)
5) LUUUUUKE (L)
6) PIE (L)
7) Memlo (R )
8) ZAUN! (S)
9) Izzy (Does it matter?)
Gives us 2 baserunners at the top, Markakis’ OBP becomes even more useful with runners head of him, and Huff have runners to drive home. If Jones makes out, they tend to be fly balls, iirc, and not GiDP. (Facts may prove me wrong, but facts have a well-known liberal bias). I’m not a manager, nor do I play on on TV, but that lineup seems, to me, to maximize what we’re trotting out there Opening Day.

See, I expect Pie to get the Adam Jones treatment from last year, where he will be batting 8 until he starts to do well.
I just don’t think Diamond Dave would ever bat four lefties in a row if he can find a way to avoid it also, so I used MelMo to split Huff and Luke. Putting four lefties together does really make the other manager’s life a bit too easy.

And once more...
we have proof I should be a history teacher and not a MLB manager. Four lefties? Nobody does that, not even Dusty Baker.

I think that approach really helped Jones develop as a hitter without having the expectations that come along with hitting in the top 5. In fact, I’m fine with Jones hitting towards the bottom again to start this year. I would be shocked if Pie didn’t see something similar.
by jvoelks on Feb 6, 2009 4:27 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
How is it better to have Jones bat
2nd when he gets on base 1 out of 10 times less then Nick. Now if Melvin and Aubrey struggle well we can revisit but I wouldnt tinker with what worked pretty darn well last year until it doesnt work.
by sanders833 on Feb 5, 2009 11:51 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Look at AJ's last month
In his final 55 games, he hit .288-5-29.
Seriously, I like Adam at #2. Gives Markakis better protection with Huff at 4 behind him, runners will most likely be on already, and Nicky can break out the power stroke a little more often. Based entirely on factless opinion, Nick Markakis just looks like a #3 hitter to me. So there. :)

ok with that
the funny thing was for some reason Nick struggled a bit hitting third…I think it was a complete fluke since he handled it pretty well the year before.
Still, does a guy with a .311 obp make sense in the two hole? I think Adam will improve but I bet his obp is one of the last things to get better. Its just part of the maturation process and he needs to get a little more success before that happens.
by sanders833 on Feb 5, 2009 9:39 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think his OBP will go up, significantly
He said he enjoyed working with Terry Crowley and learned a lot from the O’s hitting coach. He realizes he could improve his game by drawing more walks. In 2008 he walked 23 times and fanned 108 times in 477 at bats.
"I was just talking to (former Oriole) Mark McLemore about that. He was asking me where I’m going to hit in the lineup and I have no idea. But he thinks I could be a good two hitter between B-Rob and Nick.
“If I did hit there I definitely have to take the walk. Trust yourself and don’t be afraid to take the walk. I’d like a .385 on base. To do that you’ve got be patient at bat. That can be hard, but that’s what separates good hitters from bad.”
This is a kid that gets it.

Adam is really
the guy I am hoping starts filling Millar’s role of clubhouse leader. It wouldnt hurt for the O’s to start looking at locking Adam up to one of those Sizemore- Granderson type deals although Adam is hard to project at the moment.
If you listen to some of Markasis’s comments he made on MASN I almost thought he was referring to Jones about young hitters learning to take pitches. Nick may have been talking about conversations I can imagine the two of them having.
I hope Adam has a natural progression with his OBP, but I think he will always be on the low side, more like a Torri Hunter type hitter. But putting him in the two hole EXPECTING him to just improve may screw his entire approach and get him thinking to much. I would continue to bat him somewhat lower, let his natural progression continue. By the end of 2009 I hope we are talking about a power spot for Adam, not the two hole anyway. When I compare Jones to Hunter, its interesting to note that Adam is about three years ahead of his development curve. Everything looks good for Jones, from attitude, work ethic, opportunity. The sky is the limit but I still expect him to have his rough spots this year and we need to keep expectations in check.

Pie won’t be better than Mora and there’s no way in green hell that Trembley bats four lefties in a row.

use blanks for now
2009 yes its still bad…
and I am a bit frustrated that three somewhat effective pitchers are available to eat innings (Wolf, Looper and Sheets) and we seem to only be interested in one, maybe.
LA is said to be offering the Garland deal to Wolf which makes him affordable if you want him. Looper at 2/10 is affordable, wont hurt your long term planning and has success in the bullpen if you gradually want to switch his role as kids EARN the right to pitch at the major league level. Looper doesnt want to pitch in the AL-smart man if you are looking at a one year deal. The O’s are going to have to get creative.
Much like the Giants are hovering like hyenas around Manny Ramirez waiting for the Dodgers to move on, should the O’s do the same with Sheets? My first sense was we need pitching so bad that we should. But every team could use Ben Sheets…the Sox sign Penny and Smoltz, the Yanks CC and Burnett…the Mets, Texas everyone. So his arm and injury history must be scary. I am thinking he is carrying a tear similiar to what Rich Harden might have. Still, at times Harden has pitched through it, AJ Burnett had similiar concerns two years ago, rested and came back pretty strong.
But the real problem with guys like Harden and Sheets is when you build a team around them and they cant pitch it takes the heart right out of a team. Its why Beane moved Harden on, its why the Brewers probably dont want to go near Sheets, Cubs fans saw what losing Prior and Woods did every year until it was almost inevitable the season would end on their injuries. Unless Sheets signs for some ridiculous amount then it probably makes sense to pass. And I trust Andy is smart enough to keep middling interest in case Sheets becomes a value proposition. Then you might consider it.
by sanders833 on Feb 5, 2009 12:18 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Then you might consider it
and then again maybe not….
I guess now we have to look at Wolf, Looper and Pedro….
I still think Pedro can pitch…I think his last start he fanned nine. He is going through that phase where he has to learn to pitch with what he has left but he could help a club. I cant see where having him around wouldnt be beneficial to the young pitchers. Still, value and opportunity come into play. Pirates actually makes a lot of sense. He should help their young pitchers and the NL is going to be user friendly to a pitcher wanting to rebuild value.
Still he has to be considered but he probably wants an incentive type deal.

Sheets is most likely done for the first half of the year
When you and your agent are arguing with your former team about who should pay for the surgery, that’s not a good sign.

Milwauke will pay
he was clearly hurt on their dime.
I made my first post before the surgery was more or less announced. Sheets is out of our planning for now.
I still think Pedro might be able to help as would Looper. I think Wolf is going to LA. The market is established with Garland, he has history there, NL West. Great chance to build his value or have a second year option exercised.

As you can see, offense was not the problem last year. Won’t be this year (should be better). But we all know you can only win so many games 10-8. I fear another season of seeing a solid bullpen get absolutely destroyed by a group of starters (minus one) who can’t get out of the 5th inning.
by jvoelks on Feb 6, 2009 4:39 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
sums it up pretty well
You could say for maybe 12 million more we could have signed Looper and Wolf. Throw them with Guthrie, Koji and Hill with this offense, defense and bullpen and you have a chance at 81-81 and we could eliminate a lot of pretenders and just focused on our real question marks-Patton, Albers, Penn and let the minor league guys earn their spot. We could just have sent Waters, Bass, Henrickson, Hennesy, Pauley, Sarfate on there way. I am not saying those guys might not have a major league job but not on our club. Wouldnt that have been nice? Sure but I didnt see it coming out this way at all.
But that would have taken more financial commitment but also a clearer understanding of this market earlier in the season. I can say I never thought Garland and Wolf would go for these amounts and if Andy would have known this in October that might have been his plan. For $40 million over two years you could have locked up Garland, Looper and Wolf. Two years would have been short enough to not really block anyone and get rid of a lot of the pretenders we will see for another year. Of course, hindsight is twenty twenty.
by sanders833 on Feb 7, 2009 11:53 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The thing about this
You can’t sign guys who don’t want to play for you. It’s hard to say what the preferences of Garland and Wolf would have been, but Looper certainly doesn’t seem interested in us.
by Brotz13 on Feb 8, 2009 12:44 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
It was more a point on if Andy knew the asking prices for Garland, Looper and Wolf would be this on Oct 1 how would he have reshaped his offseason strategy. Just shows how quick the market changed and Andy might have courted these guys with a full court press and passed on Wiggy and Henrickson who’s combined salary would almost pay for Looper. Add in Cabrera’s salary and you paid for Garland or Wolf.
Like I said, that is using 20-20 hindsight.
