Not so fast Ty

It seems something may have come up in Ty's physical and the O's apparently want a second look.

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/schmuck/2009/02/orioles_lets_get_physical.html

It sucks if this doesn't work out, this seemed like a very good (cheap) deal for a solid player, but there is no reason to buy damaged goods right now.   Hopefully it turns out to be nothing and the deal ends up going through.

Hopefully

This has nothing to do with Angelos.

cmon now

this signing has been universally applauded, why would Peter be involved?

by sanders833 on Feb 9, 2009 7:45 PM EST up reply actions

Well

It’s just plain weird that this thing hasn’t gotten done yet, so I’m reaching for an explanation,.

Angelos has freaked out over injury stuff in the past, although the dollars involved here shouldn’t really register a blip on his radar screen.

by dkdc on Feb 9, 2009 7:56 PM EST up reply actions

because he’s anal about physicals… not that’s a bad thing. I like the fact that Angeles is anal about physicals.

physicals

Petey has made a fortune being a lawyer, thus he brings that mentality to the O’s front office. He ain’t touching a player unless their health record is foolproof. Being cautious with a player’s health is nice, but no risks are ever taken

The O’s being risk adversive is not due to Petey’s tight stance on physicals. There’s isn’t a single player we lost due to Petey being anal about a physical. Sele is the closest example and the O’s tried to reduce the number years on his contract offer to adjust to what they saw in the physical. And he broke down right about the time the O’s doctors said he would.

And a failed physical saved us from signing Jeremy Burnitz.

did it?

I thought the Burnitz just went, “On second thought I’m going to be a Pirate, smell ya later!”

That was my recollection too

…and what a stinging loss that ended up being.

by punkrawka on Feb 10, 2009 6:49 AM EST up reply actions

Burntiz had a two year deal in place with the O’s but he accepted a 1 year deal with the Pirates. I don’t believe Burnitz formally the physical but the O’s were taking their sweet time with the physical (probably because they found something they didn’t like) and Burnitz said screw you, I’ll take less money with the Bucs.

correction: burnitz didn't formally fail the physical.

Well, there's been at least one

I’m drawing a blank on the pitcher then ended up signing with the M’s rather than us over a physical. He did get injured the following year, though. Anyone remember the name?

We also lost RP Xavier Hernandez

to the Yankees in 1994 after a failed physical. He went 4-4, 5.85 that year and we were left to wonder what could have been.

Yeah, I mentioned Selel above. He broke down about the time the O’s doctors said he would. The O’s tried to shorten the deal in light of this information, but Sele said screw you.

You're right

I remember being mad about losing him, and then Angelos ended up being right anyway.

Petey's hangup

I thought it came from the whole Albert Belle fiasco. And from that standpoint, I can kind of understand it.

See, Angelos played the Belle situation right

Sure, it was a lot of $$$, but a lot of people forget the O’s were only on the hook for 25% of that money. 75% of his remaining salary was paid by an insurance company.

Still

Paging B.Looper, paging B Looper-

I'm in that corner

too but from what I ready he’s staying out of the AL and particularly the AL east. I can’t say that I blame him. He’s not a great pitcher but has always been a favorite of mine and probably wouldn’t pitch as well in the AL.

Thank you

I figure if the O’s really wanted Looper and/or Wolf they would have stepped up their offers by a couple mil over two years but the O’s werent going there. I think getting Hill may have ended the SP pursuit. I know it wont matter in terms of a playoff spot but adding more reliable starting pitching is the key to ending the Aug/Sept swoons and preserving a bullpen along with maintaining a positive feeling about what you accomplish during a season.

You cant keep getting your head bashed in for two months at the end of every season and change the culture of believing in your team and management of that team. Still it appears the approach is to change it internally. It might happen but…..

Right now Guts, Uehara and then Patton and Hill are the two guys I really would like to see in the rotation from an upside point of view. Then maybe we get a glimpse of Tillman and/or Matusz this year and those six could slot for the spots to begin 2010. If it was just that simple.

Update from Schmuck
Free agent infielder Ty Wigginton was back in Baltimore for a second round of medical tests yesterday and his two-year deal could be announced later today or tomorrow. Apparently, the Orioles wanted him back for a recheck after finding an irregularity in one of his lab tests, not because of anything structural that would affect his on-field performance.

If Ty falls through

Then maybe Andy makes a move for Dunn. Yeah, I know it’s not gonna to happen, but I can dream.
