Talkin' Baseball: Tuesday Edition
More baseball goodness on TV today!
First up: O's at Red Sox on MASN and MLB.tv at 1:05 p.m. No radio so again I'm left in the lurch. Joe Angel I miss you! Scheduled to pitch are Brian Bass, Radhames Liz, Kam Mickolio, Bob McCrory and Brian Matusz.
Those of us following the WBC know how awesome it's been this time around. Three games coming at you tonight:
Italy vs Venezuela at 5 p.m. on ESPN2. Loser goes home, winner moves on to round two. The Italians knocked off the Canadians last night much to my surprise.
Dominican Republic vs. Netherlands at 6:30 p.m. on MLBN. The Netherlands managed to beat DR once this year but my money is on DR this time around.
Cuba vs. Australia 10 p.m. on MLBN.
Also I heard Davey Johnson on XM this morning and he said that the game tomorrow, USA vs. the winner of Ven/Italy will have Ted Lilly starting and Guthrie coming in after him. I wanted him to start but whatever. It'll be nice to see him.

Damn I hope the production team gets it together by opening day!
The blues have always been American, as American as apple pie. The question is...why?
Bass walks Jacoby
to start the game…here we go! At least Wieters is behind the plate, and Matusz should be pitching later.

Jim Hunter
It just took him a full inning to realize that J.D. Drew was sent back to third due to a ground-rule double and did not actually score. Apparently no one on the MASN team noticed this until now either…

T-Bone Shelby
just indicated that Adam Jones will start the year hitting in the second spot. I wasn’t aware that this had become official, but I suppose the strategy is ideal. Roberts distracts the pitcher, who also is afraid of Nick and Aubrey hitting behind Adam, thus Jonesy gets pitches to hit rather than consistent curveballs…we’ll see.

I understand the strategy
but I don’t agree with it. I love AJ but his sub-.330 OBP has no business in the #2 spot.

That OBP will rise
Everything I’ve read from Adam just before ST shows he knows he needs to be more patient. He talked with Mark McLemore in the off-season, and he wants that #2 spot. Mark broke it down – you gotta take when the strikes aren’t there. He knows. And he’s a smart enough player he will do it. Look for a SERIOUS rise in OBP outta Jonesy this year. I mean a marked improvement.

Wieters blocks plate
and prevents Lowry from an inside-the-park homer!! Pie blew that one bad!

Looked to me like slid behind the plate and never touched it.

Yeah
I don’t think he touched home…although at first I did.

MASN
is really pushing the youngsters. They interview Wieters practically every game, and some combo of the Big 3 pitchers. Lots of “I just need to keep working” and “I can only control what I can do for myself”…but hey, at least it is something new and shiny!!

i watched bull durham. baseball interviews have never been the same for me since i first saw that movie.

I'm listening to him right now
He’s great! Awesome accent and great smile. Let’s just hope he ends up playing well.

Is Luke Scott for real?
Juice diet and chopping wood?

I've heard about chopping wood
He was on 105.7 when spring training first started talking about his off season routine of being a lumberjack.

Luke
is slightly strange. You can tell in his voice that he is not real thrilled about DHing.

I had to post this link. Sorry.

From every interview I've heard with him so
It seems that someone hasn’t yet informed him that he’s going to be primarily DH’ing. Whenever someone brings up that he’s going to be the DH, he continues to say that’s not how he understands it.

I think he's in denial
Even though he’s said he’ll do whatever is best for the team, it’s clear he really doesn’t want to DH full time. I had hoped they might give him some work at first this spring since Aubrey has said he does enjoy DH’ing, but that doesn’t seem to be in the cards.
[Guthrie's] president of my heart. ~PhilR8
There are a few people
that I would like to see try first. Luke would be one of them. Nolan Reimold played a lot of first in his high school and college days, and I wouldn’t mind seeing him play there at AAA from time to time.

It does make sense
Aubrey is in the last year of his contract and if he doesn’t come back and they don’t get an external 1B solution, it’d be nice to know that Luke or Reimold or Brandon Snyder could play there.
[Guthrie's] president of my heart. ~PhilR8
Luke's future is also
a pretty big question mark. Almost went to arb this year, and who knows how his streaky ass will do at DH when he has 45 minutes between at bats to think. I have to admit though, I am not the biggest Luke fan, not that I don’t want him to do well.

45 minutes..
Now would be a good time to invest in notebook futures. He’s going to be writing novels between AB’s

Can every MLB please drop "Sweet Caroline"
I know the RS consider it their song despite nearly every park playing it, but can we please move on?

swings a big bat, not too shabby at the hot corner, be nice to have him on the roster instead of Gomez
melmo was dancing in the dugout
priceless. I hope it’s on youtube later. I would like to watch it again
Anyone watching DOM-NED
Great pitching battle. Jimenez 4IP 10K. Pedro is now in.

man i am hoping nederlands wins...
IT would put a smile on my face knowing that either d.r. would be going home… or rather, back to spring training
I'm watching the rerun right now
And Pie really botched that deep flyball. The throw from Blake was on point, and although Wieters looked a tad out of position, he still made a pretty nice play.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
Can't anyone hit a ball out of the park tonight?
DR-NED still scoreless in the 9th. I picked up the game in the 5th and I haven’t seen so much as a base hit yet. Quite a few well hit fly balls and some walks.

Pedro Martinez goes home, I think we should all start repenting of any sins and watching out for pale horses.

OMG
great sports night…. Nederlands and North Dakota St., both great stories.
This baseball win is U.S. Russia 1980 Miracle type stuff.
An all-star team against a team with 20, 21 y.o. kids, and the kids win???
Just like 1980.
They were really good defensively
And had adequate pitching.
DR was a bunch of All Stars, not really a team

I also have my O's spring training black and orange hat,
which will be my nederlands hat for the next week (except for when they play the u.s.)
AND just think, ponson could be pitching against U.S.A. haha
I'm watching my recording of the O's game
These Baltimore jerseys, the Baltimore looks way too low on the front. It looks like Baltimore is plastered across Luke’s stomach.
[Guthrie's] president of my heart. ~PhilR8
Also
whoever said Luke is a little strange earlier today, I have to disagree. Dude is a giant weirdo, at least based on that interview. His problem with his Achilles was related to his digestion? I’m glad the Lord revealed that to him.
[Guthrie's] president of my heart. ~PhilR8
Still
I’d love to join Luke at the range for a little target practice. If the Late Show can advertise a colonoscopy (sp?) contest, surely the O’s could put together a shoot with Luke afternoon. And I’m only half joking. I’d go to the range with the guy. I’d beat his ass in a target competition and then he’d probably have my head mounted on his wall after I told him that I was a godless vegetarian.
Are you kidding

Caught the highlights
On SC this morning. It’s nice that all we keep hearing about is Pie’s incredible defense, and the first I ever see of him involves falling down and muffing a fly out. Also, they gave Weiters a shout out for his tag at the plate.
That NED DR game was awesome. I’m not big on pitching duels between teams I don’t care about, so I stopped watching fairly early on. I certainly regret that. Great upset.
