Two WBC games that REALLY don't mean Jack
All four teams from Pools C and D that are advancing to the next round are playing tonight, just to try and assert their dominance by being declared Pool Victor.
Those two games are USA vs Venezuela (MLBN) and Puerto Rico vs. Netherlands (ESPN2)
Both Davey Johnson and Billy Ripken have told me on XM lately that Lilly would be starting the game and Guthrie would be pitching after him, but after Lilly pitched three innings they brought in Hawkins and Grabow! LIARS! Perhaps he'll start the next inning though. Venezuela currently leads 1-0 in the 4th.
The Netherlands is finding Puerto Rico a tougher task than the Dominican Republic, as PR leads 3-0 in the bottom of the 6th.
Oh, and Mexico plays Australia tonight at 10 on MLBN. Loser goes home, so I guess that one matters.
I'll be tuning in to see if Guts faces off against Melmo.

Nobody does as much as Derek Jeter to help their team win
Nobody! He has the intangibles.

he's a gamer
"In a couple of weeks or a month, I'll be excited about this team," Dawkins said. "I've got to get used to saying that -- I'm a Bronco." Then he paused. "I'll tell you one thing -- I'll always be an Eagle."
Ooh Guts just K'd Cesar Isturiz
It’s no Melmo, but I’ll take it.

Or not
Maybe I imagined that? Because they didn’t add the run and the inning ended while I stopped paying attention for a hot second.

I'm mad that I missed Guts
But maybe I shouldn’t be?
Younger writers, more attuned to the use of the Internet than their older colleagues, may not have a problem with the disappearance of the books. But in past years they didn’t have the Internet as an alternative reference site. They apparently just didn’t feel the need for any information the books provided.
He's still pitching
just gave up a lead off double to Miguel Cabrera

Is that Cal or FFace as 1b coach?
And do I have to root for Jeter here?

guts will probably get one more inning??
it;d be nice if the offense could support him, or rather, get back that one run.
He might get to face cesar too
he loooves to hit it to SS
Was doing that the whole game vs. MFY, as if to challenge those who would deem to be his replacement

Sometimes Guthrie's fastball is pretty flat....
so it has to be about location, and the hitters guessing wrong
well, iguess it is sort of that way for everyone ha
Or just let him check swing into a dp

Tell me that’s not Cesar at SS

Probably
He’s got 43 pitches so far. He needs to be stretched out. Earlier they showed an empty bullpen.

Cesar with the double
means that Guts needs to pitch more this spring

Pitching needs more work

Eh
I never buy into that idea. I mean, if he was coming in late in the game in the middle of the inning, sure. But didn’t he come in to start the inning? I don’t see how that’s much different.

And he knew days in advance he would
Basically, he would have treated this like a start. One bad outing, I’ll live.

though...
he was complete basura when he pitched out of the pen in ’07.
small sample set and all, but, hey.

Geez
I came in here ready to correct you – it’s a good thing I actually looked up Guts’ splits in ’07.
As a starter (26 G): 165 IP, 6-5, 3.44 ERA, .697 OPS against
As a reliever (6 G): 10.1 IP, 1-0, 7.84 ERA, .935 OPS against
Yeah, he was pretty bad. Looking at his gamelog, I was there for his second relief appearance, when Jaret Wright’s arm fell off vs. the Tigers and Guts came in and allowed one run in three innings and struck out three. That clearly colored my impressions of him as a reliever.
Damn
Chavez, you’re fast, but you’re not that fast.
Perfect strike by Wright

this game sort of does mean a little bit...
i’d rather have nederlands in the first game than puerto rico…. i have been rooting for nederlands in their pool obv., but u.s. wouldn’t choke against them. Easier way to start off 1-0 in the second group in miami. But we’ll just have to start by beating puerto rico!!!
That was what I thought Dunn was gonna do
After his long foul earlier.
Yeah, that was 350 feet long and about 500 feet high.

It's hard to hit a high fastball when you're like 5'2"

Australia is not very good at baseball.
8-0. in the 4TH. They are Mexico’s bitch.

They mercy ruled Mexico earlier in the tournament
And they really almost beat Cuba. They were leading late in the game. Australia showed up and played well; they’re just getting their asses handed to them tonight.
I'd be afraid of beating Mexico right now in the tourney
heads could roll….literally
