Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Two WBC games that REALLY don't mean Jack

All four teams from Pools C and D that are advancing to the next round are playing tonight, just to try and assert their dominance by being declared Pool Victor.

Those two games are USA vs Venezuela (MLBN) and Puerto Rico vs. Netherlands (ESPN2)

Both Davey Johnson and Billy Ripken have told me on XM lately that Lilly would be starting the game and Guthrie would be pitching after him, but after Lilly pitched three innings they brought in Hawkins and Grabow! LIARS! Perhaps he'll start the next inning though. Venezuela currently leads 1-0 in the 4th.

The Netherlands is finding Puerto Rico a tougher task than the Dominican Republic, as PR leads 3-0 in the bottom of the 6th.

Oh, and Mexico plays Australia tonight at 10 on MLBN. Loser goes home, so I guess that one matters.

I'll be tuning in to see if Guts faces off against Melmo.

Or not

Maybe I imagined that? Because they didn’t add the run and the inning ended while I stopped paying attention for a hot second.

I'm mad that I missed Guts

But maybe I shouldn’t be?

Younger writers, more attuned to the use of the Internet than their older colleagues, may not have a problem with the disappearance of the books. But in past years they didn’t have the Internet as an alternative reference site. They apparently just didn’t feel the need for any information the books provided.

He might get to face cesar too

I never buy into that idea. I mean, if he was coming in late in the game in the middle of the inning, sure. But didn’t he come in to start the inning? I don’t see how that’s much different.

Geez

I came in here ready to correct you – it’s a good thing I actually looked up Guts’ splits in ’07.

As a starter (26 G): 165 IP, 6-5, 3.44 ERA, .697 OPS against

As a reliever (6 G): 10.1 IP, 1-0, 7.84 ERA, .935 OPS against

Yeah, he was pretty bad. Looking at his gamelog, I was there for his second relief appearance, when Jaret Wright’s arm fell off vs. the Tigers and Guts came in and allowed one run in three innings and struck out three. That clearly colored my impressions of him as a reliever.

this game sort of does mean a little bit...

i’d rather have nederlands in the first game than puerto rico…. i have been rooting for nederlands in their pool obv., but u.s. wouldn’t choke against them. Easier way to start off 1-0 in the second group in miami. But we’ll just have to start by beating puerto rico!!!
