Due to Dustin Pedroia's oblique injury, Brian Roberts has been added to Team USA's roster in the WBC. Because he was announced prior to the first pitch of this round, he is eligible to play as soon as he arrives in Miami.

Sonofa...
It’s great B-Rob gets more exposure and the respect he deserves, but if he gets hurt… I just hope Justin Turner’s going to get some playing time until he gets back.

Yeah, this seems to be great news for Turner
His two bombs today probably helped his cause, but if BRob is going to go rep the USA, Turner is the man for the time being.

He'll be back sometime mid-next week
Did you SEE yesterday’s game? No way they get out of Round 2. They won’t even get to Guts’ start on Wednesday.

Did you SEE games 1 and 2 of round 1?
They killed Venezuela the first time around, they should beat the Netherlands no problem. They are certainly capable of getting to round 3, even if they have to go through Puerto Rico again. No sure thing of course, but they’re certainly not a lock to go home.

Who are the starters?
I’ll take a guess on how far we go. Hopefully, Guts looks better. Who’s got the next game of this round?

Too bad
Turner isn’t a more capable SS. I like the Izturis signing, but a little offense at short would be nice. Justin Turner seems like there may be more than meets the eye.
And how did the USA bat-boy get a strained oblique??

The weight of his awesomeness was too much for his body.

5’9" Pedroia is no match for the manly 5’9" Roberts.

No way is Pedroia 5'9
That’s thorougly debunked. Of course Roberts might be smaller as well. But er I mean…haha he’s small! Bat boy little league tee ball!

I saw him next to Jeter but Jeter is pretty tall and Roberts always looks butt tiny next to tall guys too. I don’t guess either of them are 5’9". What’s Pedroia supposed to really be? 5’6"? Roberts is at best 5’8" if I’m making a guesstimate.

This makes team USA
100 times easier to root for.
I was at the game last night where the US got mercy-ruled, and it was an awesome time. I got to hand it to the PR fans, they know how to support their team and have a good time. There was an entire band in my section that somehow snuck in a full drum set.

plus easily attainable incentives
8 mil and I still want Roberts by a lot…and you know if the Cubs had Roberts they would be a totally different team in my opinion. How many more playoff series are teams going to let Soriano bat leadoff….and suck.

still a one year deal!
And yeah, I’m still a little peeved about the Roberts extension. They should have let him test free agency and then resign him. I doubt his price tag goes up from 4/$40M next offseason.

Lets say you were right
and let him test free agency…he would look good in that Cub hat, or Met hat…
So you would be right he might not get the money but he wouldnt be here….in fact as you point out he and Furcal wouldnt make a bad DP combo now would they…
It was one more year then I wanted but I know where he will be for next five years so I am going to root like hell for him. We have to have some guilty pleasures once in a while….

Here's the thing
and let him test free agency…he would look good in that Cub hat, or Met hat…
Then we lose him! That’s what irks me about this entire thing. I love Brian Roberts. But if we lost him to free agency, I could get over it real fast. I would take my compensation draft pick and move on. B-Rob is a very good 2B but he’s not someone worth vastly overpaying for given current market conditions.

Fair enough
I think what Brian does at the top of the lineup is pretty special. LA thought the same about Furcal and the contracts are pretty comparable. Orlando Hudson doesnt bring this game to the table, when he gets to the table.
Every team has to take some projectable risks…I think the O’s, as currently constructed and given the financial layout of their payroll over the next five years felt this was worth doing versus the draft picks, loss of hometown goodwill, and the real possibility that this team can contend beginning in 2010.
Sometimes you feel you have to walk away, I think the O’s bent a little more then they would have liked but as I said before, I embrace that he is here and think its better then some late draft picks. You cant do this with everyone though and your point is well taken. You would probably make a better GM then me for sure.
But I just love Brian goofing with every team’s first baseman after a hit or walk. I have never seen someone get so much pleasure from the game.
