2010 Big Free Agent Spending, not Just for the NBA Anymore, according to Angelos!

Hello everyone, Angelos is on the interview circuit again. I read today in the sun that Angelos is going to spend big when we become  in the range of competitive in 2010 or 2011.  Personally, I hope we are competitive very soon as well, but a couple things struck me 1. What is his definition of  "range of competitive" After all we are in the al east, so he can say he'll spend the $, but who knows what he's thinking?500 would be a great season in the al east for this team.. it could be just talk to try to keep us patient still.  Also  was glad to hear he praised MacPhail so far but would he let him do his job when he spends all that $$? After all  i remember Albert Belle and other huge free agent  highly overpaid busts, so I hope he'll let Andy do his job..

His hip disintegrated. He hit like a monster for us before he was unable to play any longer. It was such a fluke thing. He wasn’t Omar Daal or Sidney Ponson or Ramon Hernandez.

And, and, and

Let’s not forget Angelos got insurance on that contract. He only paid out 25% of what Belle was owed after the hip went bad. That contract wasn’t that bad – once he got hurt, PGA was on the hook for only about $3.5M a year of the $13M a year Albert got. Dude is smart.

exactly

I will go to my grave defending AB. The signing didnt turn out amazingly great, but he was pretty much the best hitter on the team while he was with the O’s, even if his numbers were declining from previous seasons. He was a beast.

NBA?

NBA teams are gonna go broke…oh you’re talking about Bron Bron. Well, yeah, the Knicks or somebody will sign him, but a lot of NBA teams are hurting big time right now.

What i meant was that in 2010 supposedly nba teams..

are going to save all their cap room to sign wade, lebron, etc. I think that the media made that up to be honest.. Believe me I know how poorly the nba is doing. The Sixers GIVE AWAY tickets to some games and still don’t have a full house. Anyway funny you mentioned ponson, he actually looked decent in wbc, we’ll see how he does with kc, probably washed up though..

With teams getting smarter

and locking up their young talent, it’s going to get harder and harder to sign good free agents in their prime. Looking at COTS (http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2001/05/2010-free-agents.html) there isn’t much I like in 2010. Beltre would look great a third, but I don’t think Seattle will let him go. There are some decent pitchers up. Lackey, Myers, Harden, and, of course, Bedard will be available. In 2011, Carlos Pena would look great at first, J.J. Hardy at short, maybe Cantu at third, and there are some great ace level pitchers who’s contracts are up.

I am really hoping

we don’t need to shop for a starting pitcher in 2010 or 2011. That’s one position we should have covered aside from C and RF.

Maybe

We aren’t really THAT set with starting pitching. Even if our farm’s big 3 pitchers work out and are ready by 2010 (probably unlikely) and assuming Guthrie is the same Guthrie of the last 2 years; that only gives us 4 guys that I would be confident going into a season with. I realize that maybe one of the guys we added may end up panning out, but I wouldn’t count on it. Granted there are other guys in our farm that may make some progress and wind up as ML starters.

One would think

that BAL would be a very attractive place for a legitimate big league starter if they get to the point where they have 3 above average starters and a couple cornerstone guys like Markakis and Wieters.

Agreed

The more we develop from within, the more attractive we will be from the outside. Keep stocking the minors with good young players…not everyone has to be a blue chip for this to work. Eventually people will see B-more as a place that could be desirable if the dollar is right.

Really? I think that's crazy talk

Sure, if everything works out we will have five average to above average pitchers in 2010 – Gutrhie, Uehara, Hill, Tillman, Matusz. But Tillman and Matusz will be rookies and Hill is not a sure thing and Uehara is a stretch to become an average starter. Arrieta won’t be ready for prime time. Even if they all work out we can trade Uehara for something and sign someone better. Signing pitching is a huge risk, but that’s our teams biggest need.

Other than that, Adrian Beltre is clearly really good

I've always quietly routed for Beltre

God, I hate going into the free agent pitching market, but if we have to, I want a very cheap veteran that can teach the big three to be major leaguers.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

As Andy says...

Draft and develop pitching first. You can ALWAYS buy a bat.
