Pauley, Baez out of rotation running

Yesterday Dave Trembley announced that David Pauley is no longer in the running for the rotation, and today he gave Danys Baez the bad news (bad for Baez, not for us).

That leaves 5 men fighting for the three remaining spots behind Guthrie and Uehara: Hayden Penn, Adam Eaton, Mark Hendrickson, Brian Bass, and Alfredo Simon.

Should Dave and Kranny call me up today and ask for my advice, I'd suggest Penn, Bass, and Simon to round out the rotation. Penn hasn't been lighting up ST but he's young, he's been looked on highly in the past, and he's out of options. Brian Bass will, in all liklihood, never amount to anything. But let's at least give him a chance to not amount to anything. Mark Hendrickson and Adam Eaton have been proving for years that they're useless. Alfredo Simon came into camp as an unknown but he's performed well and I think has earned a shot.

Sadly, Dave and Kranny will not be asking for my advice, and I think their final rotation will be different from what I'd choose. My gut tells me it'll be Hedrickson, Eaton, and Penn, with one of them going to the bullpen/released when Rich Hill returns from the DL.

I know this rotation isn't that important in the grand scheme of things. Sounds ridiculous to say that, but it just has to hold it together for a little bit longer  until our saviors can arrive. But there still is no excuse to have a rotation with both Adam Eaton and Mark Hendrickson. Just for fun I looked them up on baseball-reference.com today. Eaton's ERA+ for the last five years: 84, 90, 90, 73, 75. Hendrickson? 94, 74, 108, 88, 78.  Can we please give the younger guys a chance to prove they suck as badly as these two?

BTW, I am SO tired of Spring Training. Bring on the games! I at least had the WBC to keep me occupied for awhile but now I'm just staring at the wall, waiting.

I still can’t or maybe just don’t want to believe that there is a distinct possibility that either Eaton or Hendrickson will be in the rotation. We don’t play in the NL West. These guys are going to get lit up like a Christmas tree for a month and a half until they are mercifully demoted to the bullpen.

Fixed.

But at this point, eh, what can you do. All our pitchers with upside are either too young or hurt and all the cheap mediocre pitchers don’t want to pitch in the AL East.

what can you do?

Not much, I agree. I still would like to see a rotation of Guthrie, Uehara, Penn, Hill and either Liz, Bergeson or Bass, because guys like Eaton and Hendrickson have zero intrigue to me. And Simon too. And seeing both of them in the rotation makes kind of naseous. The good thing is I need to work on getting sick because I’m not yet in mid season form.

Penn, Eaton, and Bass

is who I would start out the season with, and Eaton can be up on the cutting block when Hill comes back unless he really shows us something

I serious doubt

Eaton has anything to show besides his historically putrid numbers of the past 3 years. There’s no there there.

Penn

I don’t really care who makes the OD rotation because it won’t be that way for long. But I will be very disappointed if Penn isn’t given a spot. I think he deserves one last shot and I’d much rather watch that than a wash-up Eaton or Hendrickson.

Seriously

We KNOW Eaton and Hendrickson suck at the MLB level. Penn hasn’t had a chance to suck at the MLB level. It’s his turn!

I know

he’s been hurt and had a run of bad luck but Penn really needs to show that he can pitch consistently in the bigs. He’s 42 years old or something like that now. I think he’s running out of time to carve out any type of lengthy career.

Penn was a top organizational pitching prospect for a reason

and he’s been given a slate of bad luck his entire career. I see no reason why not.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

You just described Adam Eaton but used the name “Penn.” And honestly the other reason that Penn was a top organizational pitching prospect is we had horrible pitching “prospects.”

Still I agree I want to see him get the shot.

That's not exactly true...

Yes, the O’s had a weaker farm system back then, and yes, Penn wasn’t on the same prospect level as Matusz, Tillman, and Arrietta are now. But Penn was still a Baseball America top 100 prospect 2 years in a row. So it wasn’t like he was Rich Stahl, the best of a bunch of non-prospects. Penn was considered by most in baseball to be a legit prospect, before his string of bad luck.

Penn on Thursday

I have been rooting for Penn for a long time now, and I think he deserves a shot.

That said, I need to vent my frustration at the way he just blows it every … single … time he has a shot. It just drives me crazy — today I go to check the box score of the spring training game and the dude has given up five runs in two innings. (Actually it was even worse psychologically, because I checked in when he had only given up one, and I got to watch the numbers mount in almost real time.) I know he should have another chance — he’s got upside, his minor league record (up to a point) suggests he can be an average pitcher — but I can completely understand why people might give up on him.

OMG, usually we have to wait until August and Sept before the replacement level players make it into the rotation. Penn better make it. Then we have two crappy vets and two crappy minor league vets. And since one of the vets is left-handed he’ll make the rotation as well. This season is going to be so ugly. When do get to post our win projections this season. I’m thinking lower 60s.

Actually, the last few seasons

In the last couple of seasons, our starting pitching has been quite good until August. Last year, Guts, Cabs, Olson, and Liz were all performing quite well until the wheels came for all of them in July (except for Guts). The year before that, Guts, Traschel, Bedard, and even Brian Burres for all pitching well until Brian Burres became Brian Burres and Traschel was traded.

Well, I think Burres was enough to have promise. I think he’s younger than Guts in fact. Olson and Rad were our farm guys. Same with Bedard. And even Cabs, another O’s farmhand, was looking really good for awhile last season. After all, Z was kicking SC’s ass in the Cabrera Bowl until July… maybe a little earlier.

innings

birdman – I think it hasn’t been that the starting rotation has been decent till August as much as it was the plus arms in our bullpen cover for the starters until their arms fall off en masse. That of course becomes an ever bigger this season, because most of their arms already seem to have little more than duct-tape and safety pins holding them on this year.
I think the only way Johnson, Albers, Sarfate and Ray will really be able to recover from their injuries and still be useful pitchers when the Big Three arrive is if we keep all five of these shit-machine ‘starters’ in the pen somehow and have them piggy-backing minor league style.

by arlingtonOsFan on Mar 25, 2009 6:44 PM EDT reply actions

That's how I remember it

On his bad days, Cabs was done at 3. Olson never made it past 5. Trachsel was dead at the get-go, and Burres started off well, but go hurt. The BP kept us in games, but we just wore them out. That’s where the wheels fell off the bus.

Matt Albers (or whoever else were our long, middle relievers) cannot explain the success of our starters in the beginning months. Sure they might have hauled a starter out of jam, but 1) this wasn’t a regular occurance, and 2) the starter still had to pitch multiple innings well to get into that position.

Eaton, Bass, Simon

Bass hasn’t done anything to warrant not getting a shot & Simon has actually shown flashes of something other than suck. Hendrickson is a bad, bad idea. Penn can’t keep the job when it’s given to him & can’t win it when he has competition.

Unassailable logic there

We KNOW how bad Eaton and Hendrickson are. And it’s hard to imagine that Penn, Bass and Simon would be WORSE. They could, possibly, but not probably, be better. So why not give the shot to the 3 that haven’t spent the last 5 years proving they are incapable of succeeding at the MLB level?

Unless the thinking is, they are the replacement for Eaton and Hendrickson when the inevitable happens, and E&H stink up the joint in their first five starts each. Otherwise, if PBS stink, who do we go to after that, besides Bergesen?

Good point

If we are looking at this from an innings perspective, then we start with Eaton and Hendrickson, allow them to fail, then plug in any combination of Penn, Simon, and Bass.

If we are looking at it from the ’they’re all gonna laugh at you’ perspective, then we keep Eaton and Hendrickson the hell out of the rotation and just bite the bullet with the others. Of course, that will likely lead to them laughing at us anyway…

It's more of a ....

“What happens next”? perspective.

If you send out Eaton & Hendrickson and they suck, you’ve got Penn, Bass & Simon to fall back on. We can delay the invetible for 3-6 weeks.

If you cut Eaton & Henrickson in Spring Training and PBS then stink, you do you fall back on by May 1?

It’s really a matter of delaying whomever comes after PBS. If we start with those 3, we better have replacements ready sooner rather than later. If we start off with E&H knowing PBS will replace them, then the time we need to replace PBS gets pushed off that much further.

Either way, we’re no more than 10 weeks away from knowing who gets the shot after PBS. Because between Penn, Bass and Simon, two of the three won’t make it past May 31. And that’s assuming Eaton & Hendrickson are long gone by then.

Yes, I know. It’s “only” a Spring Training game, but it’s late in spring training and he’s been given ample opps to pitch this year and he seems to want to prove that he really and truly does suck as bad as Eaton and Hendrickson.

I noticed Shawn Hill was able to pick SD as his next team. Is that because he was released out right instead of being optioned, I guess like Daniel was released and chose the Nats?

Am I missing something or do the Nats actually have five guys that might almost be tolerable in their rotation-Zimmerman, Olsen, Lannan, Martis and that other guy?

actually have some arms…I assume Cabrera has a spot since they want to see if the money they paid him is worth anything before they give it to a kid who they control….but I think he will be on a pretty short lease….and between the usual injuries, ineffectiveness I am sure the Nats will be able to see anyone they really want over the year.
