Anyone Else Tired of ST Excuses?
http://masnsports.com/2009/03/eaton-speaks-1.html
This is Roch's blog showing more excuses from a big leaguer about poor performances in a spring training game. The excuse is followed by him publically lobbying to the team to keep him.
George Sherrill has talked somewhat like this too, and everyone keeps going "yeah, he is bad at spring training." Quite frankly, I am tired of hearing players talk about how they don't care about spring training and that their bad performances can be excused because of things like "I don't get paid" (Eaton) or "I never do good in spring training" (Eaton and Sherrill).
Plus, what is up with Eaton going to the media lobbying for a spot on the team? I had respect for him as a veteran though I did not want him on my team. Now, I have no respect for him and I really don't want him on my team.

Whatever
"In a couple of weeks or a month, I'll be excited about this team," Dawkins said. "I've got to get used to saying that -- I'm a Bronco." Then he paused. "I'll tell you one thing -- I'll always be an Eagle."

I'm just tired of spring training
Seriously though, we hear a lot of excuses from bad players because they are competing against other bad players for roster spots. Do you think Eaton would pull out “I’m always bad in the spring” if he was up against pitchers who had earned their rotation spots through actual results? He can do it because no one else has produced either and he’s looking for any little edge.

You're just making excuses for not liking Eaton
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

we need to make excuses for that?

I am a little weary of it all too
but Adam Eaton gets paid for the regular season and he sucks then too. So what’s his excuse for that?

Its Getting Late
Less than a week before they break camp and still too many question marks. With 10 of the first thirteen against the Yankees, Rays, and Red Sox, the O’s need to hit the ground running.

Oh, they'll hit the ground alright.
I just think it’ll leave an unpleasant smear when they do.
I want to be wrong, of course…but all three of those teams are just plain better than us. If we come out of those 10 games 5-5 I’ll be ecstatic.

Part of excuses is
just how athletes rationalize the ups and downs of performance…pitchers are never going to admit to a sore arm in ST as its gives mgm an excuse to cut them. Plus, they are always that one outing from turning the corner, they need games to count to optimise performance, etc., etc., they are “working on things”….and in some cases this is true and others its BS although remember all these guys were stars at some point in their playing careers at HS, College, minors….its why they are at this level.
Its also up to the coaching staff to sniff though all the BS. Of course, with this group the BS is mostly BS. Yes, it gets tiring. Its one thing to hear Mariano Rivera say he needs inning its another to hear Eaton say it.

I had respect for him as a veteran
This was your first mistake. Eaton is a veteran because people keep giving him jobs he hasn’t earned. There’s really no more to it than that. Phillies fans were stunned anyone else would bother with this schlub.

It’s not my decision, but at the same time, I know I will help this team at the big league level. If you look at my record in spring training, it’s never been very good. I don’t get paid for this. Nobody gets paid for this. You still want results, but you’ve still got to go by how you feel and how things are working for you.
Not that I’m trying to defend the guy, but I took this quote to mean he doesn’t get paid to suck and he’s somewhat contrite, not that he doesn’t get paid to be a part of spring training.

Thats how I read it too...
He’s wrong, though. Lots of Orioles get paid to suck.

OT - Roch
I’ve hardly been here this spring so I’ve been catching up reading a LOT of O’s stuff today. I noticed that Roch is actually writing leaner blog posts about baseball without the usual high volume of corny asides. Nice change IMO.

honestly I kinda miss the corny asides
(I don’t hate Roch like some people seem to think I do.)

That's an enlightening quip
Respect the game and all that stuff. I have to figure this went over real well with Diamond Dave.
If the O’s weren’t so damn desperate for pitching, you’d figure he’d be released after saying something so stupid. The way I figure it, he still is getting paid to lug his sorry ass out there in spring training. I wish he could quickly find out that not giving a shit about his spring training performance actually does affect his ability to keep pulling a paycheck.
