Guess the opening day lineup!
OK, we're all bored with spring training. But we're only one week from the real thing! So here's a fun game -- let's guess who will take the field on opening day and what order they will bat in! We have a decent number of unknowns this year, some position battles and several guys who are going to be playing multiple positions. Obviously Guthrie is going to be the Opening Day starter, so we'll put that aside.
How to play -- post your Opening Day lineup, in order, plus the field position of each player. Not the lineup you think we should have, but the one you think we will have. If you agree exactly with one that is already posted, vote for it with the "Recommend" button. We'll see who gets the most votes, and who's actually right, next week.
1. Roberts -- 2B
2. Jones -- CF
3. Markakis -- RF
4. Huff -- 1B
5. Mora -- 3B
6. Scott -- DH
7. Montanez -- LF
8. ZAUN -- C
9. Izturis -- SS

I'm going to assume you meant RF for Markakis
It would look pretty wierd to have him and Freel standing in Left together :)

Positions!
We have a lot of ways to play a few guys between LF, DH, CF and a few other spots. Add your starting positions to your lineup!

We have a winner....
at least I think so.

Agree
Despite the lefty matchups, I think DD will want to play Scott and Pie for symbolic reasons.

CC Sabathia is pitching
That’s why I left Luke and Felix out.
by Stacey on Mar 30, 2009 10:18 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm with you on Felix
A bad spring + LHP starting = no Pie on Opening Day (hopefully). I think DD is committed to Luke as an everyday player and not a platoon (right or wrong), though.
by punkrawka on Mar 30, 2009 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm surprised you think Montanez will make the team
I’d think that if Luke were gonna play OD they’d put him in LF and then Huff and Wiggy at 1B/DH.
by Stacey on Mar 30, 2009 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was torn between picking Freel or Montanez
I’m kind of secretly thinking that Pie might get cut at this point and Montanez gets his roster spot. That’s probably crazy talk since Pie is one of MacPhail’s man-crushes. I don’t necessarily have strong opinions about either one of them, they’re both just filler right now. We’ll see, I just decided to go out on a limb on that one spot in the batting order for fun.

I’m thinking Scott and Pie will be grabbing some bench vs. Sabathia…
The Norfolk lineup will feature Lou Montanez.

Is everyone somehow convinced Jones is going to be in the two spot? I know he wants to be, but I didn’t see that coming.

3) Mora – 3B
4) Huff 1B

Well I thought Trembley announced that's where Jones will be
That’s the only reason I stuck him there.
by Stacey on Mar 30, 2009 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
huh
I hadn’t heard that. That’s a little annoying because I really prefer Markakis at 2nd.
by math_geek on Mar 30, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, Trembley said he wants Jones in the 2 and he has been hot the last few ST games so I’m figuring that is where he’ll be on Opening Day.
by jvoelks on Mar 30, 2009 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Personally, I think it's a great move
Speed at 1 & 2 (Roberts & Jones), a little pop at 2 & 3 (Jones and Markakis), and power and OBP at 4 (Huff), power at 5 & 6 & 7 (Mora, Wiggington, Scott combo).
1-7, that’s a viable MLB lineup.

The players are very solid
but after reading the Book analysis at Beyond the Boxscore, they show that 3rd is actually the fifth most important position in the lineup, after 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th. Our best player should be in one of the three more important spots, and 2nd is a perfect fit for Markakis
by math_geek on Mar 30, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I never would have guessed that
I’d have figured 3rd to be much more important, with two typically high OBP guys in front of them, there should be lots of RBI chances at the 3 spot. Stats be damned, I still like Roberts-Jones-Markakis as 1-2-3

I have that book
and read that chapter, and would agree with you in most circumstances that we should put Markakis at two, but I still think it’s important to try and protect Adam Jones Jones the best we can from breaking balls. He made huge strides last year but I still feel he’s at his best getting fastballs behind Roberts.
Eventually, Jones will develop more power and we can bat him lower in the lineup and Bat Nick second.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

What I meant to say was that I read info
similar to that in a sabermetric book.
