25 Man Roster - Hypothetical
I know this isn't going to happen, nor do I think it should, but what if the O's decided to put the best possible team out there for 2009 with the goal of winning as many games as then can, just for this year. That means not worrying about development, not worrying about rushing players, etc. How many games would this team win this season:
Roberts
Jones
Markakis
Huff
Wieters
Scott
Reimold
Mora
Izturis
Pie
Freel
Wigginton
Zaun
Guthrie
Matusz
Tillman
Arrieta
Bergeson
Hill
Penn
Sarfate
Johnson
Uehara
Ray
Sherrill
Obviously I took a few guesses/risks with the pitching staff since we don't know if Hill, Penn, or even Sarfate would be the best options in there. You could make a case for David Hernandez or Troy Patton. You could make a case for Liz. You might prefer Uehara in the rotation and Arrieta in the pen for this year. Or Bergeson in the pen. I also think Reimold is better than Pie, right now and for the future. 7 of your starting 9 would have a .350 OBP or better most likely (only Izturis and Jones wouldn't), so we would score runs. Tillman, Arrieta, and Matusz might blow up some days, but I think all three would be better than league average.
I say the team above goes 86 - 76. Tell me I'm crazy.

You're crazy
Matusz, Tillman & Arrieta up in 2009? Weiters up on Opening Day? It’s like listening to one of the callers on the Scott & Anita Show.
Here’s my picks for the O.D. 25:
Starting Rotation: Guthrie, Uehara, Waters, Eaton
Swingmen: Albers, Hendrickson, Penn
Middle: Liz, Sarfate, Walker
Setup: Johnson, Sherrill
Closer: Ray
Catcher: ZAUN!, Quiroz
Infield: Huff, Roberts, Izturis, Mora. Wiggington
Outfield: Markakis, Jones, Pie, Scott, Freel
I feel so confident in this that I’ll wager a gold-plated rocket car on this panning out.

Four man rotation?

I think that's
what the swingmen are for. Typically don’t need that 5th starter until week 2 of the season.

I like the exclamation point after ZAUN. Sort of like Frente!

Any better ideas?
It’s not like we got a hell of a lot to pick from for spots 3,4,5.

uh, yeah...
i think penn and pauley start the year on the team, at least one in the rotation. if hill’s healthy, he’s in. if hennessy’s healthy, he’s at least a swing guy. i’m predicting that hendrickson starts the year on the d.l., delaying some decisions for a little bit. baez and walker are probably on the opening day roster b/c of dollars. at this point, looks like walke’s in for sure. they could probably ask baez to accept an assignment to start the year. i believe liz and bergesen still have options, so there’s absolutely no reason to not play out the string on the guys that are out of them until it’s established they’re toast.
i also think robby hammock may have an inside edge on backup catcher b/c they like his versatility.

This ^^^^
I see Baez being released, but otherwise, I agree. I’m not sure Hendrickson is on this team either.

Trade bait
He might be traded if he can put together another outing or two like today. The Os will eat much of his contract, but still.

yeah
Radhames Liz, Hayden Penn, David Pauley, Rich Hill. There are four guys I’d prefer in the rotation to Adam Eaton and Chris freaking Waters.

“A hell of a lot to pick from” is exactly what we do have.

And Adam Eaton and Chris Waters are the quality sticking out?? Oh I begs to differs. They’re all rather crap for the most part but there’s a lot of them to choose from and Eaton and Waters are not near the top of my list. Especially Eaton. Adam Eaton would have to throw a no-hitter for me to not dread every start he theoretically made.

Slightly closer to .500
I think…maybe 82-80. Great thought though, would be fun to watch!

Nope
I’m gonna harsh that mellow right now. This team doesn’t win 75 games this year. And I don’t care, as long as the Big 3 aren’t rushed up. Let them develop, let Wieters stay down for the 3 or 6 weeks or whatever it is to delay his service clock, and let’s see if we can find some corner infielders. 2010 is gonna make it all worthwhile. I wanna see Brian and Jake in September, and not a minute before unless it’s obvious they are wasting their time in MiLB.

Oh, by mid-May
when we’re still within 10 games of .500, I’ll be all about how we’re gonna steal the Wild Card. You just watch.

it'd probably be more MacPhail's fault
Though of the two I’d rather keep MacPhail so go on then.
