The rotation really
Who do we really want to see in the rotation?
Obviously we have Guthrie and Uehera as 1-2
I'd love to see what Hill can do this year, but to rely on him for anything is foolish, in an ideal world he is our number 3 .
I'm pretty much sick to my stomach thinking about Hendrickson or Eaton pitching at all for us. To paraphrase Bill James, they are starting pitchers...and I guess if you shot me into space that would make me an astronaut. If we are going to punt on the rotation and let absolutely horseshit pitchers out there, we may as well just give Penn the ball and see what he can do, we know Eaton and Hendrickson stink. I suppose it makes sense to give Liz one last chance at starting, but I feel like he is going to end up in the pen, and it may make sense to try to get him used to that role sooner rather than later.
I think I would go with Guthrie, Koji, Hill (if possible), and then a mix of Penn, Pauley, Albers and Bergensen, maybe even David Hernandez, who can't possibly be worse than what we've got going on now, even he won't ever make it as a starter.
Not that this is an option, but I sort of think Matusz would be our 2nd best pitcher this year....which is really depressing.

I like that rotation
I really liked what I saw from Pauley the other day and Matusz has been looking good so far. As far as a number one guy I think its sort of predictable that It’ll be Guthrie this season but I like what Buck Martinez had to say about Uehera and I’m starting to believe this guy can be our number 1 in the future but I still need to see more of him.

Koji does look really good now,
but the guy is in his mid-30’s and hasn’t been a consistent starter for two years. I hate to be pessimistic, but I don’t think he can keep this up all year.
As far as the back end of the rotation, I see Penn, Pauley, Albers, Liz, and Bergesen as the best potential options. JUST SAY NO TO HENDO AND EATEM!!

+50
I like Kojimania but he’s not "obviously’ going to be in this rotation by July, let alone the #2 guy all year.

The closest upside
arms I thought were Hill and Patton after Koji and Guts. Patton I always put in mid season and I guess if there is one thing with Hill’s arm is he can go on a thirty day DL rehab and pitch in Triple A if he needs time.
Pauley is starting to make a case and Bergesen is showing something. Tillman is clearly not ready and dont even want to think about Matusz. Nobody really has a body of work yet that screams its me, its me so as the outings get longer hopefully a couple of clear choices emerge.
Darn it, someone give Pedro a call. A one year deal for five million isnt going to hurt anyone.

Seriously
If he’s up for a 1 year deal, do it. But I think the Dodgers will have him signed within 2 weeks.

man...
see, i thought the same thing about randy johnson, though, i guess he was really mooking more to stay out west, though i think he would have dug te opportunity to stick it to the yankees regularly.

I have absolutely no doubt Matusz would be our second-best or perhaps even our best starter if Guthrie were to regress some.

I don’t know that “depressing” is the right word choice. Sure, it’s a bummer that our choices for the 2009 rotation are a pile of washed-up or quad-A goo, and that Matusz isn’t going to be considered for the major league roster at present. But that he has looked good and still projects to be here as early as next year is at least a sign that we’re drafting and signing the right guys now.

does anyone doubt...
that matusz will probably at least get a september call up this year?

I think you could see
any combination of the big 3 up near the end. Tillman may end up taking the longest though, judging by his spring (which is not to say he has been terrible or anything).

and obviously...
if matusz, for some reason, doesn’t show command at norfolk, it’s a moot point, but i can see a scenario where he’s called up earlier if by injury or process of elimination, the out of options dudes, the also rans and bergesen have been given a shot. i mean, we’re all on the same page that at this point, bergesen is probably the first starter called up and matusz isn’t far behind?

Bergesen #1, Matusz #2
certainly has the appeal of logic going for it.

bergenson
I had no idea how bad his K rates were in the minors. He struck out 2.9!!!! per 9 innings pitched. No way he doesn’t get the shit kicked out of him in the bigs. Also, report today says that John Parrish and Brad Hennesey are hurt and will not be considered for the rotation (at least at first)…they will be missed.

Brian Bannister
fooled them for a year. Why not Bradley? What is the downside, he is bad like everyone else.
Aaron Cook has been doing if for a few years now. It can happen occassionally. Of cpurse, wrong division to be this kind of pitcher. He would look good in the NL West.
Hey, give him his shot if he earns it.

Ok here goes
Your 2009 Orioles starting rotation:

Koji

Liz needs to go to AAA. I could see Bergeson there, at least to start. They aren’t going to start the arb clock on anyone they don’t need to.
I like the idea of Hill, Pauley, Penn, I guess.
Younger writers, more attuned to the use of the Internet than their older colleagues, may not have a problem with the disappearance of the books. But in past years they didn’t have the Internet as an alternative reference site. They apparently just didn’t feel the need for any information the books provided.

I know there guys are not great
but with the attrition of starters we are seeing someone please call Pedro and Odalis Perez. For one year, what I dont want to do is ruin our bullpen cause it really looks like we are going to wear them out again. We need to preserve these guys for the future as well as count on an upgrade from the minors.
Odds are we cant afford Pedro but Odalis Perez has to be affordable. He would take the same contract as Henrickson and is an upgrade.
