FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Orioles traded former top pitching prospect Hayden Penn to the Florida Marlins on Wednesday for utility infielder Robert Andino.

Penn, a 24-year-old right-hander who made his major league debut in 2005 as a 20-year-old, wasn't going to make the Orioles' roster and he was out of options, facilitating the trade. Given an opportunity to make the Orioles' Opening Day roster this spring, Penn went 0-3 with a 10.05 ERA, allowing 27 hits and walking six in 17 innings.

Andino, 24, has hit .201 (29-for-144) with two homers and 12 RBIs in limited action over the past four seasons with the Marlins. He was drafted in the second round in 2002 and touted as the Marlins' shortstop of the future, but Florida acquired Hanley Ramirez in a trade with Boston in 2005, moving Andino down the organizational depth chart.

If Andino is out of option, does this mean he makes the team?

Yep

Looks like he’ll be the other bench guy. Sorry Chris Gomez.

Damn you

I can’t see this as a negative. Andino’s a defensive minded dude who might be able to learn to swing the bat better.

Farewell, Hayden

Andino makes a lot more sense given our roster needs right now. Since Penn is out of options, the Marlins are presumably keeping him on the opening day roster, so this is a great result for Hayden.

this also means

They are going with 12 pitchers.

There is one free spot on the 40-man (Pauley’s spot) to add Moeller/Hammock as the backup catcher, but if they want to add Eaton to the 40-man roster, they will need to DFA Brain Bass.

DFA Brian Bass? NEVER!

Seriously, I can’t even remember what the guy looks like.

This completes the purge of former "future rotation"

Remember all the talk of Bedard, Cabrera, Loewen, all to be joined by Penn? This was to be the rotation of 2009. They were to be the foundation of Flanny and Duquette’s big push to .500 ball (!) which would be a starting point for … whatever.

Better to cut bait now and salavge something in a trade

than persist in the belief that Hayden Penn will ever amount to anything on a MLB staff.

Anyone watching the game right now?

You can try out the new mlb.tv player for free – no blackout restrictions, either. It looks pretty good so far – it has a DVR thing, so I’m watching the game from the beginning.

I’m watching the live Orioles game, and have an archived NYY/PHI game from last week playing in PIP. The DVR controls are visible when you move the mouse cursor over the video feed.

Since, you know, once the season starts, none of us who live in Maryland will be able to watch an Orioles game this way. Sigh.

Yeah that blows

My friend in NJ had MLB.tv for a few years and I used to use her account to watch O’s games online sometimes, but then they figured out how to not let two people be signed in to the same account at the same time. Jerks.

Yeah, it's pretty sweet

The picture is beautiful, was watching the WBC that way. The 400k/600k feeds are garbage. I can’t believe I paid for 2 seasons of choppy, grainy video.

Although I’d like to be able to go watch a live game (OPACY, Bowie, Frederick) without getting on a plane. Or, see games vs. TEX, because it’s only an 8 hour drive to their ballpark.

I think you can watch archived games with no restrictions.

Well, I would prefer a utility guy that didn't hit like a pitcher

but we can’t win them all. At least this means 12 pitchers only, which is a big big improvement.

Who cares?

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

by Baltimo on Apr 1, 2009 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

To elaborate

Penn wasn’t going to clear waivers, so at least we got something for him. Hayden wouldn’t have panned out, and we couldn’t expect to get a quality infielder for the guy. At the very least, it’s easier to give up on a forgettable utility player than a former prized pitching prospect.

I’ve heard of Andino before when he was touted for having a rocket arm, but apart from his plus defensive skills, he is nothing more than a stopgap.

Marlins President speaks about the trade(s)
Marlins President Larry Beinfest speaks about player moves

Larry Beinfest just finished speaking with the media about his late flurry of moves as spring training winds to a close. Some highlights:

() Like Robert Andino, newly acquired RHP Hayden Penn was out of options. He has been a starter throughout his career, but he will be popped into the bullpen these next few days and the Marlins will see if there’s a fit.

Penn worked closely with former Orioles pitching coach Mark Wiley and no doubt will be pleased to have a reunion. It was Wiley who, upon joining the Marlins for the 2005 season — his first go-round with the organization — who told Beinfest if he ever had a chance to acquire Penn, he should do it.

The Marlins have liked Penn’s curveball for years — they nearly traded for him in a package for A.J. Burnett in 2004 — and were impressed earlier this spring when he struck out the side against them in an exhibition outing. At worst, they will try to slip Penn through waivers and hope to get him on their Triple-A staff for added depth, which seems do-able considering his 10.06 ERA in 17 spring innings this year and his 0-4, 15.10 numbers in six big-league starts last year.

I promise if he goes through waivers, I will be at one of his starts.

AndHedges: soo... when do I get to throw a couple of pitches and complain about "tightness?"

by CoachOfEarl on Apr 1, 2009 6:20 PM EDT reply actions

what could have been?

It is kind of difficult to wonder how Penn would have turned had he not been rushed to the majors when he was 20. Maybe he could’ve worked on his health and some things could have worked out differently. Between him and Cabrera and Loewen, you had to figure someone would’ve worked out. But here we are with Adam Eaton and Mark Hendrickson and Alfredo Simon.

Could just be a case of needing a new start, though. I wish him well. Still can’t believe he was involved in that high school shooting a few years back when the shooter was a kid from Frederick. What a weird life Hayden has had…

I would take Penn over Eaton or Hendrickson any day

as he has more potential upside, more worthy of investment. It’s not like we’re trying to win the division this year. Just hope that he is an improvement over last years fail parade.

by CoachOfEarl on Apr 1, 2009 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

He does?

If the Orioles thought that in the future he was more likely than not to be better, even marginally, than Eaton or Hendrickson, I suspect he’d still be on the team.

When was the last time Penn was good? He wasn’t even good last year when the bat got him.

by Ampontan on Apr 2, 2009 4:07 AM EDT up reply actions

05-07

Compare the players The link won’t include the names. You can do by career and by season.

Penn’s minor league numbers were pretty damn good in those years, k/9 of 9 and bb/9 around 3. Got shelled in the bigs, as you would expect from a youngster.

The last 3 years of Eaton, in the majors, shows a h/9 of almost 11, 5 k/9, and a 1.6 whip, in 350 innings. That’s pretty poor, and from a guy with 9 seasons of experience, you can’t expect he’ll do anything but get worse. And Eaton is a little better than Hendrickson, who is still in the majors because he can throw with his left arm and not put up an 8 ERA (so far)

Penn has 58 innings of MLB experience. 2008 wasn’t a great year, but it wasn’t terrible for him. This spring they split him between starting and relief. Sure he sucked really badly, but so did everyone else but Uehara and Simon and a few of the minor leaguers. Guthrie was just as bad. I just wish that they would have given him one more shot, considering the replacement options and the space was there for him (since Simon has options and we’re not going to compete this year)

The reason they traded him was the Marlins called asking specifically for him and made a fair offer (defensive OOO SS) at a position we need. Since our backup options at that position are a couple of older scrubs they took it.

Bad but not so bad

Between Cabrera, Penn, Loewen, and Bedard, the O’s had one great success. I’m trying to find the quote, but somewhere MacPhail said something to the effect of, “for every 6 well regarded pitching prospects, you get one effective big leaguer”. He said this last year after the O’s traded for Tillman, Albers, Patton, Mikolio, Butler, and Sherrill. Already, three of these guys have had serious arm problems. There is a high flameout rate even in the best systems. That’s why you need so many of them.

by uneasy rider on Apr 2, 2009 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Not sure if this makes a whole lot of sense but...

At least Hendrickson and Eaton aren’t taking up space, blocking a spot in the roster for Arrietta, Tillman, and Matusz. Penn does that.
Hendrickson + Eaton > Penn because they can be traded or dropped without there being much repercussions.

by Dr Orpheus on Apr 2, 2009 3:29 PM EDT reply actions

Roger that.

It seems counterintuitive that we’re better off stocking bad re-treads at this point, but it’s true. We need the ability to drop them like a bad habit more than we need them to have a chance at putting up decent numbers.
