Around SBN: Odds On Peyton Manning's Next Home Includes Three Teams

Adam Eaton MUST GO!

Ok, let me start off by saying I'm a Phils fan as well for those who don't know and I was at the ring ceremony wed and PROUDLY booed him because I felt he had no right to be there, or get a ring, being as he barely played, and was horrible when he did.

But anyway, I was willing to give him a chance for the O's, figuring maybe a change of scenery would help. WRONG!! 4 runs, 8 hits  in 4 innings. YIKES! I didn't get the ERA, but its same old same old! I know Albers had options, but I personally would've kept him up, and tried to find another 5th starter somewhere, pherhaps a trade. Anyone in Norfolk that could help? You guys know the far system better than me..To me the bottom line is, I now expect to lose every 5th day. Thats all.

His next start

will probably be against the White Sox at Camden Yards. Hopefully they can eat him alive and the O’s can dump him quickly. Not that I would ever hope the Orioles lose…but one lose could offset a billion loses (approximately) if we can dump Eaton sooner rather than later.

Yeah

A little bit of pain earlier to spare us alot of pain down the road.

amen!

I agree, I never would want the o’s to lose(except those very rare occasions they play the phillies, but thats besides the point.) Anyway, I still find it funny out of all the teams, he wound up an Oriole, my al team. Hopefully the get the message soon and cut him, after all they’re only paying him 400k, the phils are paying the rest. There has got to be a better 5th starter out there. One that comes to mind that could be had cheap would be Kyle Kendrick, bad spring this year, now in AAA, but unlike Eaton showed flashes of brilance last year when he was the phils 5th starter.I’m sure there are plenty others like him in the majors or AAA.

The Most wonderful time of the year! Baseball Season is here! Phils and O's!

This is silly

No one is expecting Adam Eaton to do more than be a fifth starter who can come in and eat up some innings (hopefully more than today, of course) until maybe one of the farmhands is deemed ready for the majors.

by Stanicek on Apr 12, 2009 11:42 PM EDT reply actions

It’s not silly. He was a waste of time to be picked up in the first place. Picking up Adam Eaton to eat innings is like hiring CC Sabathia as a personal trainer.

well who knows

CC could be a good personal trainer, he just doesn’t train himself

by Timmy L. on Apr 13, 2009 7:24 AM EDT up reply actions

If you want someone...

…to “eat innings,” and you’re content with an ERA up to 6.00, and you don’t care about that pitcher’s future, then just use Chris Waters or any other scrub. They won’t be any worse, and unlike Eaton, there’s a 5% chance of being pleasantly surprised. Eaton was and is a complete waste of time.

by punkrawka on Apr 13, 2009 7:51 AM EDT up reply actions

this is really my main contention

We had other scrubby arms to use. What was wrong with Waters if Eaton is the alternative?

I'd say 2%

Anyway, I guess you’re right, but my point is, what’s the point in being upset by this? No matter who’s in the fifth slot at this stage, he’s going to be terrible, and it’s not like he’s blocking anyone or making too much money. If I have any problem with Eaton, it’s that he’s further representation of McPhail’s obsession with former big-time prospects who never panned out, which scares me. (Or words to that effect.)

by Stanicek on Apr 13, 2009 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's the thing

There’s a chance, and a bigger than Jim Carrey landing the girl in Dumb & Dumber chance, that Bergesen won’t completely suck. And that chance doesn’t exist for Adam Eaton. He’s a stone-cold lock to suck.

"Any guitar solos you hear on the record where it sounds like one note, sounds like Meg White playing guitar -- that's me. Any real guitar solo where a guitar comes in and you go, 'F--k, that sounds awesome!' -- that's not me." - Josh Freese

by duck on Apr 13, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree about Bergesen

but I assumed he was one of the guys they want to get some more minor league innings.

I don’t want people to think I’m defending Adam Eaton. I’d just rather he get shelled every 5 days than put undue pressure on someone who is still trying to develop a major league level of confidence*. Rebuilding is supposed to be ugly. And no matter who’s pitching 5th, this rotation is going to be awful.

  • I’m a big Wizards fan, and because they’re so bad this year, there is a huge outcry among the fans to play the young guys, but I feel like people make this huge assumption that "
“playing time” is synonymous to “player development”. Something I really like about baseball is the ability to develop players on the farm. I feel like the Orioles are finally, after a dozen years of trying to be respectable, in a position to be patient. Even if they overachieve like crazy and win 85 games, where does it get them? Better they win than lose, but better to get as much losing out of the way this season as possible. Even if they lose 120 games, I think they’ll still be more fun than most Orioles teams of the last decade.

by Stanicek on Apr 14, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

+1

Eaton will be painful to watch at times, but he’s worth having around if he can stay healthy and suck up a few innings here and there.

Eaton really isn’t any worse than Hendrickson or Simon, and he’ll probably even have a good start every once in a while. If he allows the Orioles to take their time with players who may actually contribute in the future (Bergesen, Hill, Patton), then I’m glad he’s on the team.

okay, i’ve bought my tickets for the texas game in two weeks, and i am horrified of the prospect of this guy starting.. i hardly get to go up to Camden Yards, but seriously, i will cry like a little girl who just dropped her ice cream cone.

What up?

has a change of scenery

to the AL east ever helped a pitcher

by NickMarkaces on Apr 12, 2009 11:56 PM EDT reply actions

If they're leaving Philly or Cincy...

…the smallest parks in the majors, it’s actually possible. Doubly so for Philly since the NL East is also a strong offensive division.

by punkrawka on Apr 13, 2009 7:50 AM EDT up reply actions

but...

look how crummy eaton’s were in san diego the last couple years before he went to philly. if you can’t get it done in pitcher’s park like petco, you probably just ought to hang ‘em up (unless you’re, like, a ridiculous, grounball generating machine…then you can blame your d).

Not defending Eaton

See my comment above, he’s a waste of space for us. Just stating theoretically that a pitcher COULD benefit from a change to the AL East based on moving out of an extreme hitter’s park in another strong offensive division.

by punkrawka on Apr 13, 2009 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

oh, sure...

in theory, that’s possible.

however, i don’t think philly is nearly as favorable to hitters as cincy, though. if i recall correctly, it’s more like opacy in that it has some features which do not flatter flyball pitchers, though, on the whole, isn’t too bad. i’ll definitely grant you that outside, maybe pujols, nl east seems to have the best hitters in the n.l.

It’s not so much that Eaton must go, but that he never should have been here in the first place.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

If he pitches Koji shirt day...

I didn't think about it...

I hope they line up Koji to pitch his own day. It’s silly, but they ought to. Every time I’ve been to a shirt day, the player on the shirt seems to get a boost from the extra cheering and attention. Kevin Millar almost hit for the cycle on his.

was his first o’s homer, i believe.

Sherrill's shirt day

was after he had blown like three games in a row.

and then he came in and stressed us all out again but he made the save. good times good times.

I remember that game

The energy was great, but my hopes weren’t high considering he was working on yet another blown save that night.

It gets back to the LF conversation

at least the left fielders have some skills…with the starters you are debating pistols or swords. I guess Eaton’s past experience has the O’s giving him a shot since the money is the same. Eaton is basically a junk baller, who has to hit corners and get the curve over all the time…like Steve Trachsel. We know how that ends up.

Simon, Henrickson and Eaton are all far below average…the odds are you are going to lose unless you are facing the same type of pitcher-like in Texas.

It wont take long for Tampa, Boston, NY and even Toronto’s pitching to take over if the O’s dont get some kind of upgrades…and given the rest of the team that will be a shame.
Odalis Perez must be a real douche bag cause he is better then any of those three and of course keep in touch with Pedro every day. Look, a five million salary starting in June is only going to net him 3.5 million-Andy keep calling.

by sanders833 on Apr 14, 2009 11:02 AM EDT reply actions

I've sort of advocated Odalis Perez

But by all accounts he is in fact a real douchebag.

Define douchebag

So is Matt Garza, want him on your team?

I mean Eaton (Phil) and Henrickson (Marlins) vs Perez on Nats last year and we pick the first two. Perez has better numbers by far. Now though he hasnt even had spring training.

Ok, look I have ranted about Perez as its almost to late and if Pedro wants five million well I dont see that unless its incentive laden. As I mentioned we might have to let BB be the sacrificial lamb because its just not sacrificing wins. Its the bullpen that is going to bear the brunt of this mess.

by sanders833 on Apr 16, 2009 2:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Same thing from Fangraphs

Beyond Pedro, Odalis Perez is still available, and though it may seem as if I am beating a dead horse here, Perez is still quite productive and incredibly consistent. Over the last four years he has virtually posted identical +1.5 win values. How someone like Tim Redding was given a guaranteed deal by a contender with worse production and a more storied injury history than the equally aged Perez, who couldn’t even get a major league contract from the Washington Nationals will continue to puzzle me.
