Rays 11, Orioles 3: Well, that sucked
If there ever was a day pre-ordained for a soul-sucking loss, today was it.
I’m fighting a nasty sinus infection, and the Orioles gave me absolutely no reason to stay awake for the first 3 innings of this game, so I didn’t. I fell asleep somewhere shortly before first pitch, and woke up with Brian Bass trotting out to start the 4th. I took one look at the score – 4-0,
There’s not much to say about this game. There’s not much to say about Adam Eaton. And there’s really not much to say about Brian Bass, who was God-awful today, aside from "There’s
So let’s just pick a Most Birdland Player, rip a page off the calendar and be done with this game. Yuck.

I love the Norfolk bus
Glad that’s back

and the iPhone makes it even easier to get screencaps up to Photobucket. Seriously.
And I’ll have to start mixing up the destinations depending on how bad the performance is. Bowie won’t be used much, since that’s where our actually good players are, aside from those biding their time for service years reasons <cough!> Wieters <cough!>.

We can just ship them to Frederick....or Delmarva

I seriously thought about Delmarva for Bass...
but that meant he’d be pitching near ME, and I can’t have that.

He'd be pitching near me, too.
Just in his road jersey…

The fact that we DFA'd Matt Albers to keep Adam Eaton and Brian Bass
is quite upsetting. I’d happily trade Eaton and Bass for Albers and an empty roster spot.
Options, all about options
I’ll bet significant American currency that if Albers is anywhere near decent in AAA, he’ll be back in 10 days. Eaton gets 2 more starts TOPS.

That's true, it's both

Ortiz, Brower, Trax(2008), etc
Another couple starts like this will confirm Eaton is this year’s equivalent to those guys (and others) listed above. These guys suck the life out of the team and the crowd. Hopefully if he pitches again, Trembley has the brains to do it on the road so the home town fans needn’t be subjected to this again.
From Schmuck
Eaton probably will pitch again in Boston. I don’t believe manager Dave Trembley and pitching coach Rick Kranitz will use the offday Thursday to skip him. I think they will pitch him and give Koji Uehara an extra day of rest, because Koji is just getting accustomed to pitching in a five-day rotation.
If the results are similar to today’s, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Orioles then make the move to Bergesen to start against the White Sox on April 23 or against the Angels on April 28 at Camden Yards. I have no inside info on this, but it seems logical.
So, Peter’s guessing that Eaton has one more shot at turning this around or Bergesen takes his spot. I’m all for performance-based demotions, but just one more start strikes me as pretty quick for an MLB club. Not that he wouldn’t deserve it, but still, a bit unprecedented for the O’s to do.

Yeah, but Pete admits it’s pure speculation. And when fans speculate, they do it based on a grounded belief that Adam Eaton will never ever be a mediocre pitcher.
Anyone who has ever watched Adam Eaton
over a prolonged period of time – say, two consecutive starts – knows he isn’t a mediocre pitcher, and never will be. I’d love to see Pete’s timetable come true.

“Eaton probably will pitch again in Boston.”

He’s almost guaranteed to get shelled there, thus speeding up his release.

It's better than "Eaton probably will pitch gain in Baltimore"
If MacPhail wants to draw people to OPACY, then let the schlubs pitch elsewhere. Zero people will look at the schedule, see that Eaton is slated to go, and think “there’s a game I’d like to see”.
Anyhow, today was only one start. He’ll get some more. He may turn something around. I’m not holding my breath. I guess it’s the price The O’s have to pay to let others develop. They have sworn they will not rush the young pitching.
Eaton used to be a mediocre pitcher

The year 2000
was the ONE year he’s had an ERA+ of more than 100, which is the very definition of league average, i.e. mediocre.

The good news....

GODDAMNIT.

If it's any consolation...
Eaton pitching in Boston is pure speculation from Mr. Peter Schmuck. The O’s could very well use their next open date on the schedule as an excuse to skip Eaton and start Koji on regular rest that night. Keep hope alive, 2632.

Not only that
But the team will give up and take out Roberts and Mora in the top of the 7th.
Yeah, I went yesterday. I’ve never seen a loss quite like that.

Can't really offer a poll with one choice
We’re not the Soviet Union.
And I did enjoy Moeller kicking the crap out of that guy’s shin and basically getting away with it. And Sarfate not being Eaton or Bass. Give ’em some love!

I like Sarfate as much as the next day, but mop-up duty is not Birdland.
Also not saying that a poll shouldn’t have multiple options, just think it’s AJ by a mile.
In the end, I think the poll will show that
Sometimes, the deserved results are a bit obvious, and today is one of those days. Not to bias any potential voters, of course. Can’t mess with the integrity of the MBP daily poll. It must be kept sacrosanct at all costs.

I think the rest of the O’s fan base won’t miss him much in a few weeks when Matt Wieters gets called up. Nothing personal.

Can anyone tell me...
why one earth we were stuck with Hernandez behind the plate for so long? He couldn’t hit, he couldn’t throw to second, he didn’t make any of the pitchers better… God I hated that guy….
So yeah, I voted for Moeller. I like how even though he is just warming the spot for Weiters, he is playing harder than Hernandez ever fucking did.

Hernandez actually was good in his first year with us

Hernandez hit well his first year and was incredibly unlucky last year at the plate. He was a horrid catcher though. I think people use Ramon as an easy way out of forgetting about crybaby Javy Lopez, and I don’t think that’s quite fair. Ramon was lazy, but Lopez was a real jerkoff.

Javier
You know you’re getting into a win-win situation when you have to put an effing weight clause in a guy’s contract. Boston gave us Adam Stern in exchange for Javy, and they probably still feel like they overpaid.

because I had Easter activities to tend to today, it doesn’t appear any of these bums deserve a MBP today.

"Your wife told you to play in New York.
Well, my wife told me you look like a dork." Boo Teixeira guys.
Let's not get too annoyed with what the o's have done so far.
4-2 is a good start, and if we can keep winning series , 2 of 3 or 3 of 4, we are not only gonna be over 500 at seasons end, but most likely a playoff team. so ya, we aren’t sweeping people, but if we keep up this good consistent baseball, we are gonna finally break our losing ways.
The problem with this thinking is they’ve won a couple games they damn near gave away, and those generally start evening out. The losses have been clobber jobs. Of course I don’t care, it’s an actual effective rebuilding year. Every time they win is just a good day for me.

They say that's how the D-backs were so good despite their Pythag
Cling to dear life for the close games — don’t be afraid to go through relievers like water, etc. — and let the losses pile into blowouts — leaving Bass out to dry like we did yesterday.
I’m not saying it will make the O’s a winning team, but it’s not necessarily a bad managerial approach.
Did we actually DFA Bass?
Or is the “bus to Norfolk” just a well-deserved suggestion? I’d like to see us keep our terrible pitchers on a much shorter rope this year.
suggestion
The brass loves Bass (or at least they did in the spring, which is why we let Penn go) so don’t expect it soon.

Oh by the way
The answer to the question, “Will there now be all sorts of Rays fans at Camden Yards this year?” is no. I went to the game Saturday and I saw one Rays fan on my way in and there was one other one one section over from me. So I suppose that’s an increase from years past, but barely. There were more Red Sox fans at the game than Rays fans.
Uh yeah, Red Sox fans at a Rays-O's game in April
Towson yuppies is more likely.
Like the spillover “Red Sox” fans where my sister lives in Western MD. It has it’s share of D.C. commuters moving out to the fringes for affordable housing. Baltimore is too low rent a town to root for (as if D.C. has it all figured out), some say they like would like to root for the Nats, but you know, they suck, so they wear Red Sox gear.
based on previous vote totals
and the GINORMOUS AJ lead, I think I may chose today to enact a Mercy Rule;
AJ for MBP?

I voted Moeller
for the wrestling move. In the rare chance we got to prevent a run, he took it and turned it into a highlight reel.
I heart AJ, but this was not a game where offense was Birdland, nor pitching.
Also, I missed the ‘i got it’ thing, as I decided to do some woodworking pretty early in the game.
AndHedges: soo... when do I get to throw a couple of pitches and complain about "tightness?"
that's...what she said.
