Orioles 10, Rangers 9: Messing with Texas not as bad as reported
George Sherrill almost never makes it easy, but after a tightrope act in the ninth inning, Sherrill and the O's held on to their 10-9 lead in Arlington to improve to 5-2 on the season.
The Good
Aubrey Huff was 4-for-5 with three steaks. Nick Markakis went 2-for-5 with a walk, two RBIs, three runs scored, and a potential game-saving catch in the bottom of the ninth inning on a rocket to the wall hit by Michael Young, after Ian Kinsler had led off the inning with a double. Walker, Johnson and Sherrill combined to close out the final two innings with no runs allowed, though Sherrill as always made it interesting. Felix Pie was 3-for-4 with a homer. The new road uniforms looked great.
The Bad
Koji Uehara was roughed up pretty good: 5 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, 4 BB, 3 K. On the plus side, that beats Chien-Ming Wang (1 IP, 8 ER) tonight, and the fact that the Yankees are paying $200 million for their team and Nick Swisher pitched tonight.
The Ugly
Nothing out of the ordinary, though watching the team do everything but flat-out squander a 10-4 lead was pretty tough.
We'll do it all again tomorrow.

This just in...Nick Swisher is an ass
He actually stopped at home plate, pumped his fists, and pointed to the sky with both hands after homering…to make it 10 – 1 Tampa. He just moved himself into a category with pat burrell and JD Drew in my book.

Uh...
I’d put Drew and purrel in that category but not necessarily nick swisher and his career .245 average.

How about his career .356 OBP and .814 OPS? I mean Burrell has a career average of .257, big deal. Of course neither of them compare to Drew when healthy, and Swish is the worst of the three, but they all contribute. Swisher can hit .240 for my team any time.

yep...
a slightly better than average corner outfielder. think of all the years the o’s would have killed for just an average corner outfielder…

I knew that was coming.
Unfortunately, that .356 OBP can’t get him a starting gig in major league baseball.

well...
i don’t think his defense is SO bad that it would outweigh the benefit of his bat over gardner. the question may be, however, how big of a zone the yankees cf is required to cover this year being surrounded by damon and nady.

Yeah
What’s wrong with Pat Burell?
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Yeah, I never really thought of Pat Burrell as a dick or anything. I thought he was more gracious than he needed to be with fans after they were really, really rough on him after he had an awful season after signing his extension in Philly.
I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

In defense of Nick Swisher:
1. He seems to actually like playing the game.
2. He plays anywhere on the field he’s asked to.
3. When he had that long hair that old fuddy duddies bitched about (I’m not including you here, nor do I really care if you like Swisher) he was actually growing it for Locks of Love. One of my favorite things was watching people have to shut up after he said that.
Against Nick Swisher:
1. He goes into some God awful slumps. He had one all of 2008 basically.
2. He’s a Yankee.
3. He went to Ohio State.
4. He seems like a frat boy.

This is tough....
I never thought I would see Pie hitting so well in a game…but Nick saved the game…but so did B-Rob…and Huff was just money at the plate….Shit, I don’t know who was MBP…
Love it when its a tough decision like this….

This isn't most valuable
It’s most Birdland, so by those standards, I voted for Felix Pie because his performance epitomizes the essence of Birdland: a promising future.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

i think Nick does that more than anyone
however, pie’s a good vote. no one expected that perfprmance. that makes it Birdland.
that being said, i voted kakes

Stop the presses, this just in!!! Orioles do not exist as far as Sports Center is concerned!!! Again.
Not only did Nick’s and B-Rob’s catches not make the Top 10— which included an unremarkable NBA fella shooting (and making!) an UNCONTESTED, STRAIGHT-AWAY 3, which wasz-z-z-z-z-z…oh, sorry, musta dozed off there— but the game itself went utterly unreported. ‘S right. Nada. Didn’t happen. No tickee, no gamee.
If the Orioles win a game and SC isn’t watching, does it make a sound?
(Nice 5-min. segment on USC spring football, though. Go figure. Did somebody go and tell them who won the Actual National Champeenship?)

Yup, the Chinmeister is 0-2— and has managed to keep his ERA just below…30!
He’s been saw devastatingly awful the Yerks are contemplating using him as a pinch runner.

I just watched the Top 10
wow, some dumb ass plays. How the hell did Chris Bosh wide open 3 pointer get #2? Raptors vs. Wizards, completely meaningless game (And sure, people could make an argument for Orioles vs. Rangers being a meaningless game, but at least there were some sweet plays in it). And Golic and Greenberg on Letterman being a Top 10 “play?” Screw that. BROB and Kakes should have replaced them. Screw ESPN today. Well, who knows, maybe I kind of like us flying under the radar.
by Timmy L. on Apr 14, 2009 10:03 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
No one can make an argument that Orioles vs. Rangers is a meaningless game
It’s the second week of the season, and we are playing games as meaningful as anybody. Either they’re ALL meaningless games (in which case, maybe just don’t cover baseball at all until August?) or they are ALL meaningful. And if it’s neither of those, then certainly a game featuring a team 1/2 a game out of first, a team that would be the wild card team if the playoffs started tomorrow, is more meaningful than the media darlings who are policing the cellar right now.
Honest to god, FUCK ESPN.

Meaningless Games?
I’m all for the idea that all games have to be considered meaningful on some level, lest the be utterly meaningless. I’d tend toward the latter at this point, but your line about not covering the sport until August was so great that it made me change my mind.
However, didn’t you feel just a bit silly saying that the O’s would be the wild card team if the playoffs started tomorrow? Sure, technically it’s true, but then again, if my grandmother had wheels, she’d technically be a bicycle.
