Koji and J Dubya: The greatest buddy cops ever

Collisioncourse2_medium

Our own zknower made this graphic in one of the post-game threads (well, no, he posted it there -- he made it elsewhere) and I thought it surely deserved a day-off front pager.

In a way it's actually kind of predictable that Koji would be taken under the wings of Walker and ZAUN. I remember when Chan Ho Park came to the U.S. and he had that cowboy get-up. Koji learning the ways of Americana from J Dubya doesn't surprise me in the least.

I also want to note that after we gave him some hell last year, Jamie is pitching well so far this season. I'd like to return to loving Walker, so here's hoping he keeps it up.

You gotta wonder about zknower

I had to look up this movie, how would you ever recall something like that? Be honest, are you a robot?

it's good.

very quirky. there are some total WTF moments in it, and there are a few bits that don’t work. but i really dug it. you may have to wait for DVD though, it’s a pretty limited release.

and you probably won’t notice my bit—it’s super quick. well, actually you will notice it because it involves clarke peters, but you’ll be watching him, because he’s the funny one in the scene. as it should be.

I had no idea you all were so close...

I’m new to this site as of a week or two ago, and now have gone and read the post from last year where everyone introduced themselves. I’m sorry I missed it.
In case anyone even remotely cares:
I’m 22/m from Arlington, VA (who knew?) who is pissed at all my friends who jumped ship to the Nats a couple years back and then had the gall to call me a traitor.
I love the O’s and have enjoyed this blog so much since joining it that I’ve been doing this instead of working on my senior thesis which is due in a couple hours now.
also: Caps, Skins, Wiz and UVA.
music: G. Love, movie: The Sting…or…The Running Man
One time, I gave Jeff Conine a tour of the capitol…that was cool.

Just because you know how to read, doesn't mean you'll like the book.

And here I am!

15 due a week after that
and 25-30 due three days after that!

I’m going to lose my mind!

Yikes, good luck

At least we have weekends. I’m fortunate in the fact that my the project is completed and I just have to do a lit review/methodology…. but much of it was done so long ago that I have to spend time going back over a bunch of crap. Blech.

Welcome!

Get your paper done, though. We’ll still be here :)

Man I haven't done this yet either.

I was just looking at the link Stacey left below.

My name is Tim (if you didnt notice). I am 21 years old. Was born in Bethesda, lived in Gaithersburg for 5 years. Moved to Watertown, NY and have lived there ever since. I am an Orioles fan because Cal was cool (and still is), and my dad and older brother are also orioles fans. Everyone around me is a Yankees fan, and the past 5 years, many Red Sox bandwagon fans have appeared out of nowhere. These 15 years have been rough up here in NNY.

In college right now, at a school right on Lake Ontario. Majoring in Piano Performance, minoring in French. 2632 and Titov, we should get together sometime and play a Piano Trio, just make the violin part into cello. Looking to go into graduate school directly after my undergrad, to get a Master’s in Piano Performance.

Sports: Orioles, Pistons, UConn hoops, Syracuse football (explain those two college choices to me ha), Devils, just getting into soccer after watching a bunch of EURO 2008 this past summer, how might one pick a EPL team to root for? I don’t want to try to be a bandwagon fan and just say “O yea, Man U rocks!!”

Music: Liszt, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Herbie Hancock, Miles, Gordon Goodwin Band, Chick Corea, DMB, U2, Jay-Z, Three 6 Mafia, Cash Money, Juvenile. I think a lot of today’s hip-hop is b.s. with the electronic voices and all that shit.

Movies: LOTR, Dumb and Dumber, the Rush Hours, and plenty more.

I bought MLB.tv for the first time last week. It could either be the dumbest or smartest decision ever. So far, I have seen the O’s go 6-3 to start the season, but have also seen 3 large blowouts. I have also noticed that watching the Orioles every night has forced me to lose piano practice time (playing Schumann concerto with the college’s orchestra in a couple of weeks) as well as regular homework time. But it’s worth it in the end. There are a lot of fun and interesting people on CC, and I am looking forward to getting to know you all, even if it is only through the internetsss.

Peace out, enjoy this day off, and pray for a split against PHN. Go O’s!!!

EPL team

A few years ago (like, 4 or 5 years ago, actually), I wanted to start following EPL soccer, and I emailed a close friend of mine who lives in Hong Kong who is an addict. He grew up in Pittsburgh, and he and I had many conversations about the demise of our once-great teams.

“That’s what I need, Glenn,” I told him. “I need a team from a working-class town that was once a dominant force and has fallen on hard times….but maybe, just maybe, they’re starting to crawl back.”

So he told me to go with Liverpool. In their heydey, they were unstoppable, but the last 15-20 years have been unremarkable. This was aroun 2004, when the world was just learning who Gerrard is, and Rafa had just signed with the team. And a few years later, they are now decent-to-pretty-good again. Yet they still do things like fall apart spectacularly and lose to Chelsea at home, like they did last week. Kinda like the O’s.

Go with Liverpool.

bah...

i’m a west ham man, myself. they’re from the east end of london (i.e. the docks), they have a noted academy (or, perhaps, a “way”) and are noted for their offensive style (uh, the three run home run?).

hate to say it, but i think liverpool is more like the red sox of the premier league, to man u’ s yankees.

nah, man...

i’ve been following the premier league for about 15 years and liverpool has qualified for european play just about every year. liverpool v. manchester or manchester v. arsenal and arsenal v. chelsea are THE matches.

"If they pitch to you, make them pay."

--Diamond Dave to the Phenom

by j.q. higgins on Apr 17, 2009 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

disagree

qualifying for the champions league and uefa cup is not the same thing as success in the premiere league. as many as 6 teams qualify for the euros every year. practically like the nba playoffs

Liverpool were a dominant team for most of their history, but since the formation of the premiere league, they have yet to win; and the majority of years they have finished 4th or worst. the dominant sides by far have been man u and arsenal, with chelsea coming on recently.

in that respect, liverpool are like the orioles—once great, then supplanted by a man u, the new york yankees of english football.

hahaha

I am more interested in his earlier repertoire, the stuff that has much more Romantic harmonies. Chopinesque in style. His early piano sonatas, early miniatures (Mazurkas, Etudes, Preludes, etc.) Check out his op. 28 Fantaisie in B Minor, I did that piece last year. It basically kicks a$$.

But I’m sure I will begin to like (or at least “appreciate”) his later works as time goes on. Prometheus, Ecstasy, etc.

by Timmy L. on Apr 17, 2009 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ummmm, OK. I'm old, but I still have taste!

I had to look up this movie as well. In fact, I found it by

going to Google images and typing in ‘buddy cop movies’

As you can see, it’s the second hit on the page. Once I saw Pat Morita, I thought, ‘yeah, this is gonna be my foundation image’.

I just looked the movie up now, to see when it was made, because I knew it had to be in the late 1980s. Sure enough, 1989.

I like this quote from a reviewer on imdb:

If you’re looking for a buddy cop movie and are getting fed up with “straight white cop meets zany streetwise black cop” give this a shot. You might be pleasantly surprised cos this turns the whole formula upside down with “straight Japanese cop meets zany streetwise white cop”.

Tex Cobb

used to live in my neighborhood in West Philly in the ‘90s. I’d see him all the time on the trolley, at the laundromat, and once at a vegetarian Chinese restaurant. I always sort of wondered what the lone biker of the apocalypse was doing at the laundromat. Did he spend all his acting money, or just not make that much, or just choose a lifestyle that resembled that of a starving graduate student out of personal preference?

by Joltin Joe Orsulak on Apr 16, 2009 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m sure he’s by no means wealthy at this point, but a lot of that is personal preference I’m guessing. I’ve never heard of him being “down and out” the way so many ex-boxers are. He’s a funny, funny dude. I don’t know how much anyone here knows about his boxing career, but basically he was an iron-chinned heavyweight of minimal skill. He fought and lost to Larry Holmes in probably the most one-sided, 15-round beating to ever occur in a major fight. My favorite story from that one is when Mills Lane asked him during the fight, “Do you know where you are?,” Cobb responded, “I’m in Reno, getting the shit kicked out of me.”

My other favorite Cobb quote came after he fought Earnie Shavers, who punched incredibly hard: “Larry Holmes doesn’t hit as hard as Earnie Shavers. Nobody hits like Shavers. If anybody hit harder than Shavers, I’d shoot him.”
