How We Rank in the Majors
Batting Average
.290 (4th place)
On-Base Percentage
.376 (1st place)
Slugging Percentage
.471 (6th place)
Doubles
24 (2nd place)
OPS
.847 (4th place)
And now to the ugly stuff...Pitching.
Earned Run Average
6.33 (26th place)
Home Runs (allowed...obviously)
21 (Last in the League)
Hits Allowed
110 (Last in the League)
Runs Allowed (Last night didn't help)
69 (ooOOOooo sexual! Last in the League)
WHIP
1.77 (29th...edged out only by the 0-7 Nationals)
Using Bill James' Pythagorean Win-Loss Model, our current winning percentage based on our runs scored and runs allowed should be...
.406
...meaning our record should be between 3-6 and 4-5. Of course, it's very early in the season and, before last night's game the numbers said we should be 4-4.
Just bored in my Baseball and Statistics class. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did...call me tomorrow and we can get lunch? I'd love to post again with you sometime...if you want to.

Yeah.
It’s pretty sweet. Offered annually in the Spring semester here at Elon University. We look at baseball problems using statistical analysis and sabermetric reasoning. The professor’s this really old New York/SF Giants and dean of our business school. He stands up there and talks about baseball and the “good ole days” for at least 40 minutes of each 1 hour, 40 minute class.

Actually....
it was those pushing for complete deregulation of the derivitives market. I’m looking at YOU, Phil Gramm, and all those Dems and R’s in Congress you conned into voting for it in 1999.

Let's not forget assists to
Rubin, Summers & all the other theiving Wall Street goons who told Clinton what a great thing this would be to sign.
Looking at the #s I’ll grant he did more good than bad for the economy, but he dropped the ball SEVERELY on that one.

Correction: He WAS dean of the business school.
Pretty decent business school for a newish program, too. He was dean for a while and I think they realized he’s too old for it so they dedicated part of the new business center to him and his “9 years of service” and he kind of got the message. Go Birds.

I tell you how we rank in the Majors
In every major statistical category we rank ZAUN!!!

You know, for an
indestructible force, ZAUN is really sucking at the plate even worse than I originally envisioned. I think it is time to bring forth the only card in the deck that trumps the ZAUN…

Top 3 over all, however:
1. Desolation Row
2. Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands
3. Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again
Yeah, I like the long songs. And yeah, Blonde on Blonde is the best album ever written.

Are these ranked? Impressive …
But Under the Red Sky is up way too high. “Wiggle Wiggle” is a crime against humanity.
Desire, Infidels and Empire Burlesque are way too low.
No Bootleg 1,2 & 3? Biograph?
Still, I’d just put Planet Waves at the top and then contemplate the major suckage of Journey. I’m impressed.

UTRS is a loose, enjoyable album IMO. It’s Dylan having fun. And then since it was after Oh Mercy and got kinda panned, he just went, “Fuck you guys” and recorded a couple cool standard folk albums. Hey why not!
Desire, Infidels and Empire Burlesque are way too low.
1. Desire is so full of shit in just about all ways. “Hurricane” is an incredible song but the subject matter sort of makes me second-guess it. “Joey” is horrible; Rubin Carter and Crazy Joe Gallo are both heroes? “Isis” sounds way better live during the same time, kinda limp on record. The other gypsified songs aren’t…good really. I dunno. It doesn’t strike me right.
2. Infidels sounds really wimpy. The production is IMO the worst of any of his albums.
3. Empire Burlesque is rotten until the SOB throws “Dark Eyes” on at the end and you’re like, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Blonde all the way down at 8?
Love and Theft at #3?
We’ll just have to agree to disagree. You’re obviously a little more versed in the entire catalogue than I am, but my top 5 go like this:
1. Blonde
2. Highway
3. Another Side
4. Blood
5. Times
by pipkin on Apr 18, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hey no argument from me. Blonde was my first Dylan album and I was, like, mystified by its aura or some shit. I then found other albums I liked more. But Blonde on Blonde will always have a special place in my heart. It’s just that the first two songs sorta leave me cold. It’s an incredible album regardless.
L&T is, like, “my” Dylan. I’m biased toward that album.
I also forgot to put Modern Times in there — it’d be #24

have you ever come across Only Solitaire
http://starling.rinet.ru/music/index.htm
This brilliant Russian linguist spent, like, hours of his free time talking about classic rock. It’s worth taking a look at if you ever have, like, a ton of time to waste. He’s a wordy bastard.
His stuff about Dylan is usually pretty spot-on, though occasionally infuriating, and occasionally both.

yeah I've read Starostin
“Occasionally infuriating” is the best way to describe him, but he’s never boring.

But getting on base wins ballgames!
That must be how we’re doing it…esp since the top of the order is getting all of the hits, so we’re not scattering them.
What does your prof think of third order wins?
http://baseballprospectus.com/statistics/standings.php
According to this, we’d be 4-9 right now.
And are there any downloadable course materials? :)

The ol’ bunch order. This is one of the ways the Astros made their big turnaround a few years ago.
