OT Poll: Chiapparelli's v. Sabatino's
There's an old debate in Baltimore as to which of two Little Italy Italian restaurant rivals is better; Chiapparelli's or Sabatino's? The two stand across Fawn Street from one another. Both are unquestionably from another era, serving the hearty red sauce fare of Italians of my grandmother's generation. Both take pride in their house salads which both feature a thick creamy house Italian dressing.
Chiapparelli's advantage is that Jimmy Carter ate there while President in the late 70's - they still have a photo of it up on the wall of their lobby.
Sabatino's advantage is they're open late.
So pipe in Baltimoreans and vote for the one you prefer. But remember, this is about Chiapparelli's and Sabatino's only. If you prefer Vellegia's or Da Mimmo or Aldo or La Scala or La Tavola over these two old heavyweights, that's fine. But that's not what we're after here.

Between the two...
Sabatino’s. Thanks for posting this, BTW, now I have to have Italian tonight.

Sabatino's
Anything with shrimp is golden.

I'll confess
I’m firmly in the Chiapparelli’s camp. It’s also been the go-to Italian place for my family in LIttle Italy my entire life. We’ve celebrated countless birthdays there. We went there after my First Communion and Confirmation. I even went there on prom night. And still to this day, I find their Ravioli amazing. The bread is good too and, of course, the salad rocks. What’s not to like?

Chiapparelli's has the chicken
While Sabatino’s has shrimp. I prefer their shrimp.

I’ve only been to each one once, but was very disappointed in Sabatino’s. My parents had highly recommended it to my wife and I for her birthday, and my manicotti just wasn’t very good.
We’d gone to Chiapparelli’s once, because we couldn’t get into Sabatino’s (my parents are definately Sabatino’s fans), and I thought it was great. I had manicotti there, too, and the portion size was amazing, the sauce was great, and the bread was awesome.
I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

Chiapparelli's
for what it’s worth has been a big supporter of high school wrestling in the Baltimore area. So if community involvement matters, there’s that.

got engaged on the bench outside sabatino's
after dinner there. so i’m kind of biased in a way that has nothing to do with the food.

Little Italy
I’ve eaten at both. I actually went to Sabatino’s before my prom. I remember being disappointed (stunned at the time) that the shrimp scampi did not come with pasta. I recall the food being good, though.
The only recollection I have of Chiapparelli’s is my late grandmother trying to hurry things along by telling the wait staff that she had cancer (which she did).

Let's open this up
while the fanpost is still on the page. It seems people, not surprisingly, have some other faves around Little Italy besides Chip’s and Sab’s. So let’s hear what else is good. The truth is I have only eaten a handful of places in LIttle Italy – Chip’s, about 100 times, Sab’s, once, La Scala, once, St. Leo’s Bi-Annual Spaghetti & Ravioli DInner, many times and St. Leo’s street festivals in the summer (St. Anthony’s & St. Gabriel’s). Oh…and Vaccaro’s of course. So what else is worth trying? I’m looking to branch out.

Amicci's!
A “very” casual eatery.
