Trembley defends Eaton, butchers logic and English
"I'd like to dispel this with Adam Eaton," Trembley said. "I don't think every time that Adam Eaton pitches, it's a critical situation or a crucial situation. I think with hitters, you give them at-bats. I think you give them 75-100 at-bats. Adam Eaton has pitched for a long time. I don't think the notion ought to be that, every time he pitches out there, if he pitches good, he's on the team. If he doesn't pitch good, he's going to get replaced. I don't think that's real fair.
"If he pitches great tomorrow, everybody's going to jump on the band wagon and say, 'Hey, what a great pitcher he is.' And if he doesn't pitch well, people are going to say, 'Well, is that the last time you're going to start him?' Let's see how he does and evaluate from there.
"I think it's important that, as a team, we have an opportunity to win a series against the White Sox. We lost tonight. We didn't play well enough to win. They pitched better, they caught it better, they got timely hitting, and we didn't. Tomorrow is a new day and we have to pitch better than they do tomorrow. We have to catch it better, we have to hit better. And I don't think it's solely Adam Eaton. I think it's the team. I think it's this group. Certain guys on one particular day are better than others. That doesn't mean you cast them aside in a corner and just say, 'Hey, we've got to change this thing and do something different.' What we have is what we have. We'll do the best we can and show confidence in our guys."
No Dave, if he pitches great tomorrow, we'll all say something like 'a broken clock is right twice a day'. He's so inefficient that he's averaging 20-25 pitches an inning. I'd rather have Garrett Olsen back. He's better than Trachsel, I guess.
And did he just let slip the Pie at-bat countdown?

i think...
this is captain kirk throwing a little top soil on reality. seriously? this early in the season, bergesen was the only bullet in the chamber, though i would contend that waters can be more effective, if only marginally so, than eaton.

I don’t mean this to call Trembley a liar, but I don’t think as a rule we can trust what coaches/managers say to the media.
He’s got to show confidence publicly in his player.
I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.
Exactly
This is non-news. Even if Trembley and MacPhail have decided that Eaton only has two more starts to get it right, you can’t hang your guys out to dry in the press. We have to hope Eaton is on a short leash, but we won’t know about it until he gets the hook.

wtf
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
I think what it is....
is that Dave meant the last 3 sentences as one big run-on. Meaning…
It’s not fair to Adam to treat every start like an audition, and if he does badly, he’s out. That wouldn’t be fair to Adam.
Matt Wieters took batting practice this morning. There were no survivors.
I would be fine with that
if we didn’t have reams of boxscores showing that he sucks.
I also think that the way Capt Kirk stammered through the response, that he really doesn’t mean it, but his hands are tied. Look for Eaton to start 6-8 more times, and/or until someone else starting banging on the door (Hill? Pauley?)

When DD says, “Adam Eaton has pitched for a long time,” doncha wanna just say, “I know, Dave, I know—and he’s sucked for a long time!”

I think Hill will be ready
long before Eaton takes his 6th start after tonight. That would put HIll returning around memorial Day, and I don’t think it’s that far off.
I’m starting to wonder about ulterior motives in Peter Schmuck’s trashing of Hill, basically saying he thought Hill didn’t feel like pitching anymore.
If Hill’s Frederick start goes well, I think he makes maybe 2 more MiLB starts and then gets called up.
Adam Eaton, you’re on notice.

actually...
wouldn’t you guess that when next guy (hill or patton) gets called up, hendo goes to the pen? then, if/when eaton takes the next train to sucksville, [next youngish injured guy] steps in.

Probably more likely
Hendo seemed destined to the pen until DD decided he simply MUST have a lefty in the rotation.
Matt Wieters took batting practice this morning. There were no survivors.
wait a minute.
Are you implying that there doesn’t HAVE to be a LHP in the rotation? Right, next you’ll probably tell me that you don’t have to have at least one section of the lineup that goes LRLR. Well, I refuse to believe it.
Jioe Flaacco, Hon!!! "He’s like a live JUGS machine."
And you know what else?
Just because a fast guy is on 2nd with less than two outs, you don’t necessarily have to bunt him over.

OH MY GOD!!!!
I think I just lost ALL faith in humanity!
Jioe Flaacco, Hon!!! "He’s like a live JUGS machine."
Oh, there's more where that came from.
Wait until I tell you abiotu the Myth of the Predestined Pitch, where baseball fans think just because a guy homers after someone is caught stealing that it irrevocably cost the team a run. because pitch sequences are NEVER dictated by inning and score and the amount of outs and amount of baserunners. NEVER.

Patton and Hill are both lefties
Either one of them could fill the quota.
I’m not sure how much credence to put in DD apparently insisting on having a lefty in the rotation. It’s not like some vastly talented right-handed pitcher was passed over. It sounds like more of an after-the-fact look-at-the-bright-side kind of comment.
i think that's right...
after all, he was pretty up front about the fleeting nature of the hendo plan. come may, dude turns into a pumpkin.

I wouldn’t put any credence in it at all. He definitely said during spring training, and was quoted on the MASN site, that he’s not going to have a lefty there just for the sake of having a lefty there.
He’s there now because of his April record, he’s healthy, and he’s pitched at this level before.
Patton’s not going to be here until everyone’s sure his arm is back in shape. They’re not going to push him. Same with Hill’s elbow.
When did "Fair" come into play?
If you can’t perform, you don’t play. Not sure if that’s fair or not, but it is what it is.
I can’t throw a 95mph fastball, is that fair?

He's not going to tell the reporters that Eaton's on the plank.
At least not before he tells Eaton. So you get this verbose mock defense that basically amounts to “whaddya want from me?” It’s still April, Simon went down, we’re not contending this year, Eaton’s a warm body. For now, that’s good enough.
From the Land of Pleasant Living...
"And did he just let slip the Pie at-bat countdown?"
That has got to be a bone of contention, as in:
DD: Andy, honestly, WTF? I coulda done a lot better shopping in Norfolk.
AM: Dave, give the kid a chance.
DD: OK, Andy whadya think would be fair—say, 75 ABs?
AM: Make it a hunert.
DD: I’m holding you to that.
And do you really think Eaton is better than Trachsel? Faster, maybe….
reminds me...
HS: There’s the right way, the wrong way and the Max Powers way!
LS: But, Dad…isn’t the Max Powers way also the wrong way?
HS: Yes, but faster.

In this case, faster is better
I’d rather get on with the torture than to have it drag out like Old Turtle did.
Also, speaking of speed, Eaton’s FB is 89-90 these days. Trax threw 85.
