Orioles 8, Rangers 5: Adam Jones won't let you down
I didn't watch most of the game, but I *did* read the box score, and I don't know if you knew this, but pretty much everything you need to know is in the box score. I don't even know why they show the games on TV. Box scores in the newspaper are baseball, not human beings with feelings and seeing-eye singles.
Important:
- The Rangers went up 5-1 in the top of the fifth. Orioles fans were livid. Abandon all hope! Ye who enter here!
- In the bottom of the fifth the Orioles narrowed it to 5-4 on a Brian Bob homer, a misplayed single from Huff, and an RBI double from Luuuuke.
- The next inning Adam Jones hit a three-run homer.
- In the eighth Markakis gave us an insurance run with an RBI single.
Pitching:
- Brad Bergesen was roughed up, going four innings and allowing five earned on ten hits. He walked one and struck out three, and three big fly ding dongs were hit at his expense.
- The bullpen put it doooown after that. Baez threw three perfect innings (!), Johnson threw one, and Sherrill allowed but one hit for his fourth save.
Thank Goodness:
- Ian Kinsler went 0-for-5, bringing his ridiculous assault on Orioles pitching to a halt (hopefully). Before today he was an absolutely ridiculous 14-for-25 (.560/.577/1.160) with three homers and 9 RBIs this season against us. And his 0-for-5 today means his numbers are still absurd.

I just can't bring myself
to even consider voting Baez for MBP. Adam Jones all the way.

I did
because without Baez 3.0 IP, Jones’ HR doesn’t make a bit of difference.
And I love Adam Jones, son! And I ain’t exactly president of the Danys Baez fanclub.
But I’ll stick by my vote of Baez for MBP for today.

I voted for Baez for the same reason.

Without Jones' 3 run HR...
Baez’s outing doesn’t make a bit of difference.
Baez pitched three scoreless innings.
Jones took another frustrating Sunday loss and turned it into a win with one swing of the bat.
I vote for Jones.

I see your point
but Baez came in, bases loaded, and stopped the bleeding. He didn’t allow anyone on base. This is Birdland.
Also Birdland is having actual choices for MBP.

From Dave Tremblay's mouth to the pro-Baez ears:
“The momentum of the game changed when he got out of the inning,” Trembley said. “There was a different feel in the dugout after he got out of that inning. When we scored a couple, I think everybody felt like we were going to win the game.”

I understand that Baez was just as necessary
as Adam was to actually winning the game. But I am a bad voter in that I let the bad tastes of the past linger in my decision making today.

I voted Baez mainly because ...
… his performance was unexpected, while Jones’ was not.
I think we all realize that Adam Jones is a stud and looking like this is the year he proves it to everybody. Baez producing, on the other hand, would be a very pleasant surprise.

Yeah, I admit it: Baez, a Susan Boyle emerging from the squalor and depression of the Orioles bullpen. I believe!

Do I see a starting pitcher?!
When do we start talking about Baez moving to the rotation? With Rich Hill coming up soon, I see an opportunity to rid our rotation of both Hendrickson and Eaton! Better to put one of those guys in long relief when games are already over.

I really like Baez doing what he's been doing
It’s nice to have someone who’s dependable at putting out fires and can stick around a couple of innings. you take baez out of that role, and there’s really no one else to fill it.

This team requires a shutdown innings eater or three
Keep him right there until starters can get through more than 4/5 innings.

The problem with this idea is Baez was a bad starting pitcher when he was young. I just don’t think he’s a SP. I do think if they wanna try it sometime, well, whatever, but it won’t work. However, eventually considering him for higher-leverage innings? Yeah, sure.

You know what's really nice....
Young guys, picked up by our front office and/or resigned by our front office, contributing and excelling. Yeah this is a rebuild year, but thank god we are actually rebuilding correctly and have a plan. We aren’t trying to sign an over the hill big name.

Me, the Dr is the man
He is our new bonafide superstar, now AM needs to give him the same deal that Nicky and Brian got. Tie him up for 6 or more years. Someone wrote in the thread a day or two ago that Bedard would have to win 5 straight Cy Youngs to match this young man’s brilliance in the coming years, and with that I totally agree.
SC, great comment about the box scores. Some of us older fans here remember the days when that was the only way to know what was happening in the bigs – in the days before the internets and cable TV, we might get a game or two a week on WJZ, and that was it. Scratchy AM radio with Chuck and Bill, and just waiting with great anticipation for the Evening Sun to come after school, that made your baseball imagination run wild and visualize the game in your head.
Great post Scott, as usual! Thanks

Boxscores are a man's best friend
It is the single best thing in the world to use when you want an answer to the all-important question: “How did this guy do on that day?” The boxscore will tell all.
Harry Truman loved boxscores so much that he made the “presidential boxscore” on how the bills he wanted to see pass did in Congress. When some Russians came by for a peace-enabling trip, this boxscore was the first thing he showed them.

Now's not the time to tie up AJ
Do that in a year or two – no point in buying non-arb years when you don’t have to. But I don’t know that I’d let him get to arbitration – buy those 3 and add 3 more, just like Nicky.

He will probably be eligible for arbitration next year
As a super-2.
by dkdc on Apr 27, 2009 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Per Cot's
The following players are eligible for arbitration:
* Players with at least 3 but less than 6 years of Major League service time.
* The top 17 percent of players with at least 2 but less than 3 years of Major League service. (See Super 2). To qualify as a Super 2, a player must have accumulated at least 86 days of service in the previous year. (A year of service is 172 days. The historical cutoff point for Super 2 status is 2 years, 128 days of service, though the requirement has been as high as 2 years, 140 days.)
* Players who have filed for free agency and both received and accepted offers of arbitration from their former club.
Adam Jones of
1 year/$0.435M (2009)* 1 year/$0.435M (2009)
o re-signed by Baltimore 3/8/09
o award bonus: $25,000 for All-Star selection
* 1 year/$0.39M (2008)
o acquired by Baltimore in trade from Seattle 2/8/08
o signed 2/13/08
* 1 year (2007), re-signed 2/07
* contract purchased 7/06
* drafted 2003 (1s-37)
* signed 7/03, $0.925M signing bonus
* agent: JR Sports
* ML service: 1.139
I think what this means is that you are correct, but I’m not 100% on that.

I voted for Baez.
It is clear we had to stop them from scoring to mount a come back. Danys gave us that opportunity with no walks on top of 3 shutout innings. That was huge. I thought about Dr. Jones for my vote but we were so due to cash in on the baserunners. It just happened to be the Dr. But Baez clearly shut down the Rangers. Also I want to say I was one of the fans and board members that gave up hope and was very negative in trashing the O’s. I was having a bad day dealing with Texas pummeling us all weekend and it got to me. I will not do that again. Once again I apologize to all members that had to put up with me on Sunday.
