Nolan Reimold, OF, Orioles (Triple-A Norfolk)
Reimold is the best hitting prospect in the Orioles system not named Wieters, so he's more than a bit overshadowed in the system. He's not an elite level prospect, but most seem his as a solid but unspectacular everyday player who makes up for a decent batting average with power and walks. This year, his average is more than decent as after a 4-for-10 weekend, it actually slipped a bit to .417. The secondary skills are more than still there, as he went deep on Friday and added two more bombs Sunday, including one off of David Price to give Reimold six on the year and a .750 slugging percentage. Adam Jones and Nick Markakis make up one of the most exciting young outfields in the game, but currently Felix Pie isn't keeping up his end of the bargain to make it a threesome, which could lead to an opportunity for Reimold sooner rather than later.

I was at the Tides game Sunday
and Reimold looked really good. His bat speed and his effortless swing was so refreshing, and showed some speed in the field. For you guys who are worrying about Wieters, when he came onto the field before the game to stretch, he was limping bad. He was the DH and when he rain to first it was pathetic. Only thing he did all night was get a lucky ball by the first baseman that turned into a RBI double. When he was jogging off the field after the third out, he tripped over where the grass and the dirt collide, and he fell hard and took a few tumbles, really pathetic looking. He was limping really bad than like he hurt his ankle.

Yeah but...
do you think McPhail would just release Pie? I think he is out of options. I’m all for calling up Reimold and giving him ABs (as opposed to nutrasweet Lou).

i can't imagine...
they’d release pie just yet. if he’s still playing like this at memorial day, though, i have to think he’s toast. only reason i even think he gets that long is you look at markakis and the good doctor struggled at first. they didn’t struggle this badly, but i think for a guy to succeed, he has to have the freedom to fail, y’know?

Agreed.
I just kind of rooted for Reimold getting that “freedom to fail” the last two years. He may never amount to much but I’ve kind of pulled for him. I’m indifferent about Pie. If he comes around…great. If not…DFA his ass.

I have always been a fan of Montanez
Sweet Swinging Lou is a 4th outfielder at best and a guy off the bench. Reimold should get the opportunity to play LF. For the life of me I could not understand the Orioles interjecting Pie into the mix with the trade if they knew they could not send him down to Norfolk to work on some things. What this has done is made a good situation with 3 good young outfielders a nightmare because the lack of flexibility with Pie. I would not be surprised if they placed him on waivers and no one took him. I would take that chance to give Reimold a chance to play. No way would I release a productive, solid bat like Montanez at this point unless it is a trade. Monty hit .295 over 38 games with the O’s last season so we know he can hit big league pitching. Pie is not the guy at this point and should play a season in Norfolk and learn to hit. Just my thoughts and sorry for the errors in writting. I never proofread.

Because Pie has a chance to be a better defensive outfielder than Reimold
and could possess a BJ Upton/Adam Jones/Mike Cameron type bat., while Reimold and his bat could be pretty effectively deployed at DH and occasional corner OF/1B gigs, sort of like Huff in the past.

I'm tired of hearing about Pie's potential
He has tools. Lots of failed prospects had tools. Just because Pie is fast doesn’t mean he has the potential to be a great fielder. All you have to do is actually watch him in the field to see that he frequently gets a bad jump on the ball and takes a bad route once he does read it. I dare say the unspectacular Luke Scott is a better defensive LF, even though he has pedestrian speed. He just reads the ball well off the bat and makes the catches he’s supposed to make.
you're tired...
in less than a month of regular season ball?

Absolutely
I also watched some of his cups of coffee in Chicago. Call me a stat-hating loony if you want, but sometimes you can just see that a guy’s not cut out to be a big-league hitter/fielder.

Well OK I won’t josh you about Lou anymore. You and I are completely in agreement, just with different demeanors. Ace!

Nevermind!

One thing I noticed of major concern with Reimold.
The homeruns are great, but the strikeout rate is over 20% and if my math is right his BABIP is an outrageous .593, which is absolutely not sustainable. Using a more typical BABIP, he should be hitting about .280, not .417. He’s certainly off to a hot start, but theres reason to believe his numbers are due for a major correction once luck starts to catch up to him.
Even when luck
catches up to him, his numbers will still be far and away better than what we have in the bigs now. Let’s face it, unless Felix Pie or Lou Montanez do something drastic in the next month or so, it has to be Nolan’s turn. You can’t continually deny someone that is performing at his level.

I'm all for seeing Reimold sooner or later.
I’m just saying not to get too carried away with his current numbers. The very high BABIP is a huge red flag that suggests that maybe he isn’t actually performing as well as his numbers would imply.
Fair enough.
Obviously certain things that he is doing can’t last an entire season, but let’s face it, it would be much more interesting to watch Nolan get the AB’s that Pie is sort of wasting. Felix is starting to look better, but…

he’s really NOT going to hit .417 all year?
