In a Pinch?

I've noticed so far this season on more than one occasion that Trembley is reluctant to pinch hit for Greg Zaun.

Even in the late innings. Even with runners on. Even when it could change the game.  Even though we have a perfectly creditable backup catcher in Chad Moeller. I mean, do the double switch with your likliest bench player, and if the game turns out to go extra innings, you send Moeller to the plate next time.

I'd even go so far as to say that Moeller will get better the more time he gets.

Can anyone on Camden chat explain this to me? Is there something I'm missing?

Also, Zaun to fill the shoes of Elrod Hendricks in the future? Any thoughts?

Actually, they did one today

when they put up Montanez for Izturis and then inserted Andino into shortstop and Montanez into Left Field.

Then even put up Mora in the Bottom of the 9th.

It was a tough loss, but at least we threw everything we had at them, which was nice to see for a change.

The larger question is . . .

why is Matt Weiters still in the minors?

I don’t care what magical things happen with his time of service if they don’t bring him up until July. The Orioles have nothing resembling a functional player at catcher and the solution cooling his heels in Norfolk. That’s just stupid.

Wieters

has struck out in over a third of his ABs in AAA (13/35), while only walking 8 times. He’s hitting .270 with 1 HR.

Maaaaaybe he could use a little more seasoning in AAA before he starts to face, ya know, REAL pitchers?

Not to mention the strained hamstring...

Let the man get fully healthy before bringing him to Baltimore.

DD fears facing ZAUN

later in Kangaroo Court

Has there ever been a cooler Oriole than Eddie Murray? I mean, just straight up cool. Like a bad, suave dude. You know what I'm sayin'. COOL. SC 7/24/08

about moeller

not that ZAUN is anything special right now, but about the comment saying moeller might get better with more ab’s… he’s definitely just a back up. he played full time in NY last year and got super exposed. I’m not saying he’d be worse, just probably not much better. That being said, I dont care who plays catcher. That isnt the main reason we are losing games right now. Give Wieters his time and let him come up when they think he’s ready.

But yea, fully agree with having someone hit for him now and then. of course, in a game like last night when you already used luuuuke, your alternatives are andino, moeller, and pie. so theres that…

Give Weiters more time in AAA

Zaun’s sole purpose was to groom Weiters behind the plate. Zaun is being exposed in the running game and at the plate. That is expected. Remember this season was “written off” by O’s brass. I am 100% sure Weiters would be in and Orioles jersey today if he had not injured his hamstring. He will be up before the allstar break I am sure and when he comes up he will be the everyday catcher with Zaun coaching him. Zaun joining the coaching staff or becoming a roving catching instructor/minor league coach could be in the works. His playing days are almost over unless he can turn things around. Unfortunately it will not be in Baltimore.
