manager loses game for orioles

well in yesterdays  game between the o's and the Yanks ..........I still dont understand how the manager  after R. Cano hit a home run ...........could give  a guy named  Francisco Cervelli so much respect by    .............bringing in the right hander to pitch to him............i mean someone told me about statistics that made the mananger do this??  but your leading  3-2 in the seventh there is  no one on base  and  there are two outs ..........to a half rookie like cervelli??  I mean statistics are for a guy like A-Rod,  Derek Jeter,  Matty Alou and a Frank Robinson maybe............but a guy who..........is replacing and injured jorge posada???   I think the  manager lost the game for the  Orioles yesterday and destroyed the  "will to win" by an outstanding performace by the o's starting pictcher   Tony

Managers are very matchup/numbers oriented by nature

It has always been that way.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

I'll address the actual points....
  • Cervelli is fast, and not just “fast for a catcher” fast
  • B-Rob was playing back for some strategical reason
  • OPaCY is notorious for long grass – balls takes forever to get through that infield
  • Nick Markakis couldn’t have made a throw on that ball that would have gotten him out

It happens. Sucks that it happened there, but balls like that happen. And what, exactly, was Trembley supposed to do? You’re whole point is a backup catcher beat us. So Trembley was supposed to do match-ups to get out a backup catcher?

Logic (and the Shift Key) can be your friend.

I agree completely with duck...

and not to mention like it or not but the O’s bullpen is kinda spotty…. ok really spotty and although the bullpen had nothing to do with that play or jeter’s infield hit, they did on the other hand have ALOT to do with the 3 run jack stupid Damon hit.

I would've had Sherrill pitch to Damon

But I’m crazy like that.

But you said you'd use Sherrill?

You;’re not saying Sherrill is our best lefty, are you? Because that would cause depression.

by Timmy L. on May 12, 2009 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Sherill is one of the best left-handed pitchers in baseball...

Against left-handed hitters.

Lefties are 2-for-18 off him this year, and have hit just .168/.235/.277 against him in his career.

There’s not a pitcher on this team I’d rather have facing a left-handed hitter in a tight spot, and there are probably only a handful of pitchers in the entire game of baseball I’d prefer over him against a tough lefty.

by dkdc on May 12, 2009 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions

yep

Sherill shuts down lefties. If the O’s had enough pitching depth so that Sherill could be used correctly, his numbers would probably look like something closer to what he put up in 2007.

No worries

It’s not like it’s your job to know that, although I can’t say the same thing about Trembley.

Let’s revisit the situation. It’s a one-run game, with runners on first and third and two outs in the top of the seventh. The difference between an out and even a single (let alone a home run) is enormous. There’s a lefty at the plate, and the Orioles have a pitcher sitting in the bullpen who gets lefties out over 75% of the time.

According to Fangraphs’ Leverage Index, Damon’s at bat was, by far, the highest leverage Yankee at bat of the game.

That is the situation that Sherrill was born to pitch in. It’s a shame that he’s being misused, because he could be a very valuable player.

by dkdc on May 12, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not arguing against you

I read an article a while back to do away with saves and make some tally of who produces the outs when the game is at the highest leverage point. That would be the pitcher who tallied the new “save”.

Assuming a team has no strong closer (which is plenty of teams), it might make some sense. Said manager would be going against the grain, and it just isn’t likely. It’s sort of along the lines of punting on fourth down is an overall losing strategy. I don’t expect to see any football coaches (at the pro level) testing that out any time soon.

See!!! Thats what i been trying to tell you guys! Its Dave Trembley why the O’s arent winning. If Mr Angelos and Mr McPhal would listen to me and take my suggestions they would be in 2nd or 3rd place by now. Here are the things i suggested

1. Move home plate back 7-10 feet. Cause the the yard current dimensions is killing O’s pitching.

2. Sign free agent pitchers especialy the Bullpen. This is a must do

3. Hire John Gibbons as O’s Manager. O’s players need disapline! Now when young players make mistakes you answer them to John Gibbons why you made that mistake. And John Gibbons would do exactly what Earl Weaver done all these years.

Now if Mr Angelos and Mr McPhal would taken these suggestions the O’s would be winning and the Fans would start comming back the yard again and O’s would be drawing 20,000 to 30,000 Fans a game. Now Futher explanation why i said John Gibbons should be the Next O’s Manager..

John Gibbons is a very tough manager. He doesnt want to hear excuses! And Nether did Earl Weaver. You ask Jim Palmer this question,, Was it true if it wasnt for Earl Weaver he would never made it to Cooperstown? It was Weaver who made everyone of the players work hard and play hard! You also Ask Dempsey that one too. You ask Al Bumbry what Weaver told him when he wants to steal on his own. You even Ask Eddie Murray just what kind of a hitter Weaver made him into. Eddie Murray was never a big power hitter at Rochester. He was mainly a base hit percentage hitter. You put John Gibbons with the O’s youll see them go right back into a championship caliber team again just like Earl turned them into the early 1970s .

1. No, it’s been tried before and it screws up the batter’s eye in CF, which is important.

2. Been there, done that, see Jamie Walker, Chad Bradford, and Danys Baez.

3. John Gibbons was replaced by Cito Gaston, because he was fucking terrible.

4. You’re wrong about everything, so please, for the love of God, stop.

Ask Tom Shopay what Weaver did to him when he wasnt delivering the PH role. Shopay hated Weaver when he told him hes going down to Rochester. Face it,,if you dont meet Weavers expectations he will deliver bad news to you right in his office. If George Bamberger or George Staller tells you Weaver wants to see you in his office now. by duck on May 13, 2009 6:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Okay, let's look at the standings.

Jays under Gibbons:

2005 – 80-82 3rd
2006 – 87-75 2nd
2007 – 83-79 3rd
2008 – 35-39 5th

Jays under Gaston:

2008 – 51-37 (finished 4th)
2009 – 23-12 (1st)

Small sample size for Gaston, except for those two World Series he had in the early nineties. But there’s the point of all of this. You’ve chosen to put a manager on a pedestal who peaked at 87 wins in a down year for the AL East as a whole (Boston won 86, and the O’s and Rays were dogshit as usual). This is also a man who has proven that he can’t get along with his players in a professional manner…I just don’t get the obsession here. If you want an angry, take-no-prisoners, rah-rah guy, you could at least pick someone who’s won something, like Lou Piniella or even the great Earl Weaver. Hell, he’s only 78! Connie Mack managed til he was 87! Why swing for the low-hanging fruit?

Hello there

You put way too much stock in the manager. You have to actually have a talented team in order to be good at baseball. Please compare the 1969 and 1970 Orioles to the 2009 Orioles and let me know what you find out.

I don’t know why I even bother, though. It’s like banging my head against a brick wall.

by Stacey on May 14, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think you’re right. There’s a couple managers that probably make their teams better, and a couple who probably make their teams worse (think Larry Bowa at the end of his tenure with the Phils — they just quit on him).

I think Trembly is a good fit personality-wise, at least. He’s somewhat of a hardass, a little tougher on them than Sam or Grover (and what the hell did Mazzilli even do?), but without being Larry Bowa or Joe Cool.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

by BrianS on May 14, 2009 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I think a good manager can turn a 92 win team into a 95 win team, while a bad manager could maybe make them a few games worse. But bad teams are bad teams.
