Tampa Bay Rays (15-19) at Baltimore Orioles (14-19), 7:05 PM

Tampa Bay Rays at Baltimore Orioles, May 13, 2009 7:05 PM EDT

Masn_medium

It's the battle for 4th place!

We're relying on Brad Bergesen, who is better than Hendrickson to be sure. The Orioles have won all three of Bergesen's games since he came up (although he got a no-decision in two of them). Brad is nothing to write home about, but at least he's not my ex-boyfriend, Daniel Cabrera.

The Rays counter with Jeff Niemann, who has been rocked for his past couple of starts to the tune of 7 runs and 7 walks in a total of 6-1/3 IP.

SWEEEEEEEEEEEP!

MASN pre-game with Tim Kurkjian

He looks very small next to Jim Hunter and Rick Dempsey.

Gave a surprising amount of respect to the Orioles’ young players and prospects. Lots of praise for Nick Markakis, “he’s better than most people realize”, agreed that Nicky should have a Gold Glove, offered a scout’s opinion that Markakis is a better player than Grady Sizemore.

Also high on Dr. Jones, repeated a Trembley comment about “the most improved player in the American League this season”. He said Jones credits improved plate discipline and better confidence in his ability to drive a fastball – he doesn’t have to rush it, knows he can take his time, etc.

Young pitching: gave a scout’s take on the Arizona Fall League that Matusz was the best pitcher the scout saw there. “Right now the Bedard trade is the Adam Jones trade for Baltimore, but it might ultimately be known as the Chris Tillman trade, he is that good.” He didn’t really drop any other names on pitching, but closed by saying, “Things are going to be looking up in Baltimore, and sooner than people think.”

I guess ESPN guys aren’t so bad if you get them out of their natural Yankee/Red Sox-loving habitat.

I've always like Kurkjian.

He’s always come across as a straight baseball guy instead of the rest of them who wax poetically all season on the Yankees, Red Sox, and repeat.

lot of the time they’re freak things, not indicative of fragility, Griffey-style.

by pipkin on May 13, 2009 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand that it wasn't his fault

But some players who refuse to wear protection while batting or take huge risks in the field, like Adam, are especially prone to those kinds of injuries.

I was kind of thinking of Griffey

Because although you can’t really call a player “injury prone” if he runs into walls or smacks balls off his shins, it’s still his style of play which brought on the damage.

Felix Pie has a high ceiling and him sucking it up and getting some playing time for the O’s to see whether he can get together isn’t going to cost us an AL championship. I remember when the season started

Dave said they were going to keep him in the line up everyday. But it seems after a 0-3 night, they yank him from the line up. Yeah, Pie can be a butcher at the plate but he was ‘deconstructed’ by crackerjack hitting genius Terry Crowley and put back together. Its going to take time for him to get into a groove. Its ridicilous to think he can find a groove playing a new position and playing every other or third day. I’m skeptical of Pie but I don’t think he’s really getting the time he needs.

No. The Rays used the bunt against our pitcher.

It is a tactic used by some teams to put the infield on defense and cause them to make plays. Unfortunately there is some scouting on Walker that says he does not cover 2nd well or handle the bunt well.
