Felix Pie

It seems like no matter what Felix Pie does, some of you will find fault with him!   I became a bonafied Pie fan last season in Iowa through the eyes of my autistic grandson D'Angelo.  The connection Felix made with D'Angelo last summer will never be broken.  This young man from the Dominican Republic has more heart than the entire town of Baltimore put together.  There wasn't one game that Felix didn't walk out of the clubhouse and put his glove up to wave to a little boy whose love of baseball gave him relief from the tortuous effects of his autism!   And Felix' trade to Baltimore has't dampened D'Angelo's love and enthusiasm for Felix or for  the game of baseball for that matter.

If  you are true fans of the game of baseball, you will give Felix Pie a chance to prove to you what he can do!    I mean who cares about A-Rod or Manny who can only hit when they're pumped full of steroids?    I would much rather watch a young player like Felix Pie who works hard and gives it his all in every single game.

I hope the Orioles management sees fit to keep Felix and work with him, instead of tossing him aside like Lou Pinella did last year.  Felix started out as a 'special project' for Lou Pinella, but Lou forgot about his 'special project' somewhere along the way.

Some of the sports writers haven't even taken the time to talk to Felix and get to know him before they chew him up and spit him out.  It takes a special kind of ignorance to write some of the hyper-critical things that have been written about Felix Pie.

The next time you're at an Orioles game, take the time to really watch the work ethic of #18!   And then put your hands together and give him the respect he deserves!

If only his

“work ethic” translated into wins I’d be on board.

Yeah

I mean, no one’s saying that Pie is a bad person. It sounds like he’s a really great guy and I do respect what he did with Rosana’s son. And it’s been said here on this site that perhaps Pie hasn’t been given as much of a chance as he might have otherwise deserved.

But the criticism leveled at Pie has been deserved, from what I’ve seen. No one is calling him an ugly mook; they’re saying he can’t hit. There’s a huge difference, Rosana, and it’s one you obviously don’t understand.

I'm sure...

Felix Pie loves his mom and takes his vitamins (Camden Chat in-joke). And I’m really, really glad he connected with your grandson.

But, unfortunately, at the end of the day, he is paid to produce as a baseball player, and that’s just not happening.

I’m sure Chad Moeller is a nice guy, too. But he’s going to be unemployed in 4 weeks, tops. MLB is survival of the fittest, and we have better options than Felix Pie for the job of playing left field.

Work ethic vs steroids!

But we’ve all been willing to ‘get on board’ with Manny who turns out to be a $45 million dollar bag of steroids! Fans expect ‘Manny’ kind of hitting from players like Pie who don’t ‘pump up.’ Another of my grandson’s favorite players, Bobby Scales is making some kind of impression in Chicago. He’s another stand-up guy who has waited for 11 years to show us what’s he’s all about. I don’t think anyone should give Felix his ‘due’ for being a stand-up guy, however, that is part of what makes him special.

He’s never been given a fair shake from Chicago but I hope the fans in Baltimore treat him differently!

Manny played for the O's?

I’m sure Corey Patterson was a nice guy too as well as his bro and every other Iowa Cub. If they could hit and catch they’d most likely be CHICAGO Cubs.

Really?

How do you explain ‘nice guy’ Bobby Scales who had to wait 11 years to play in the majors? He was the second leading hitter in the Pacific Coast League last year and he didn’t even get a call for the play-offs? My point in bringing this up about Felix and my grandson, is to give him a human side! I do understand that psychology is a big part of what makes players and teams successful. Felix works hard and shows up for every game! Lou Pinella made some promises to him which he didn’t keep and now he’s back to square one. The inherent unfairness by which some of you judge baseball players indicates your lack of education.

by Rosana on May 19, 2009 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Try to follow along...

Most people who follow baseball were ‘on board’ with Manny Ramirez hitting! How could you not be? Now it turns out to be a complete fabrication of the truth! You said you were willing to ‘get on board’ with Felix if……….? And if Felix were to start shooting up which made him a better hitter, would you be ‘on board’ with that?

How can I not be?

Uh…how about b/c he’s a PHN? Kevin Youkilis can hit and walk with the best of them but I don’t like him either.

but I am sure he is an OK guy

He can catch!

How many guys could make the kind of unbelieveable catches Felix has made? I’ve never seen an individual player picked apart in this manner before?

by Rosana on May 19, 2009 2:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He can catch sometimes.

He has made a couple of great catches.

More often he gets to the ball late and has to hurry the throw from an awkward position. Training this stuff is only part of it. The other parts are instincts and reaction speed. Pie doesn’t show these things consistently.

Finding guys who "try hard" is easy

Finding guys who can ML ball is not. From everything I’ve seen, Felix can not play ML ball. I’m sure he’s a swell guy, but that doesn’t mean we should be wasting a roster spot on him.

This is professional baseball, it’s not little league, at the end of the day, trying hard is not enough, you have to produce.

Who

are you referring to? Who on the O’s roster should be playing in Felix’ spot? Let’s face it, the O’s haven’t exactly burned up the majors in recent years. How many games have you seen Felix play in? I watched him all last season in Iowa and he definitely has what it takes to play in the ML’s. He grew up in a third world country where Lou Pinella found him. He came to the Cubs when he was 17 and nobody ever worked with him or did what they promised his family back in La Romana. Growing up in a third world country definitely shaped Felix, who played baseball to make a better life for himself, as opposed to abject poverty. Watch him when he crosses the plate or makes a great catch. He makes the sign of the cross every single time. He’s the kind of pure baseball player I want to watch. If the O’s are smart, they’ll keep working with him on not swinging at every single pitch that comes across the plate. If he can learn to walk more and swing less, that will make him a better and more valuable addition to the team. The Cubs were never willing to do that. Lou Pinella can make bring the Cubs to the table but he just can’t seem to close the deal in important games…or with good players like Felix! If the O’s management and fans stick with Felix, you won’t be sorry!

swinging at every pitch? thats a lessons that you learn in single A ball not the majors

Luke Scott, Nolan Reimold, Lou Montanez, Bobby Freakin’ Scales!

Reimold,Scott or Montanez

All seem like far better options to me.

I’ve seen Felix play for about 30 games. I’ve also been able to seen his stats for another 100-150 games, and he doesn’t look very good at all.

Wait, I'm curious.

Lou Piniella found him in 2002? So Piniella was advance scouting for the Cubs WHILE he was managing the Mariners? That’s got to be some kind of a conflict of interest.

Not true fans of the game

Your problem is you’re not true fans of the game of baseball. You’re caught up in juvenile pissing contests that are meaningless! What have the Orioles done with their team in the past few years that’s worth noting? If you have such ‘awesome’ talent in Baltimore, why can’t you close the deal when it counts?

That’s the problem. We have had bad talent, and I don’t see how adding more bad talent like Pie is going to fix that.

That's unfair

1) You haven’t met us. You have NO IDEA how many games we watch, how many we attend, how much merchandise we buy. You are making that assertion based on the fact we don’t appreciate your favorite player as much as you do.

2) Seems to me, we’re ahead 3 World Series championships to ZERO in the last 100 years. A Cubs fan is the LAST person who should be judging a fanbase by its teams production.

3) We don’t have “awesome” talent. We DO have talent that is better than Felix Pie.

I hate winning !!

I wanna see a great group of guys go out there hit .200, dive on fly balls and miss them by a mile, look like they have drunk bees in their pants when running the base path and lose 100 games a year as long as they sign every fans’ program after the game because I love the essence of the game

No one has ever questions Felix's attitude and/or work ethic

In fact his outlook has been refreshingly positive, rather we’re concerned about his actual baseball skills…

I'm sure Felix is a great guy

and I’m happy to hear that he made your grandson’s life brighter.

That doesn’t mean he should be Baltimore’s starting LF.

Show me a quantifiable way that “heart” and “character” and “hustle” contribute to wins the way OBP and SLG and actually catching balls in the OF do. And I’d prefer you do it without relying upon to the straw men or non sequiturs that abound in your other posts. I’ll save you the trouble; they don’t. It has nothing to do with Manny or A-Rod or any of the rest of the players that have never and will never play for the Orioles.

Nothing would make any of us happier than Pie suddenly seizing the chance, playing like a champion and turning into an All-Star caliber player, but this looks less and less likely as time goes by. The Os OF of the future is most likely Reimold-Jones-Markakis, and Pie doesn’t fit in that equation. Doesn’t mean he’s a bad guy. Doesn’t mean I wish him ill. But I’d rather see Reimold getting the playing time since Reimold will help the Orioles get better.

One problem with Pie

Is that even if he lives up to his full potential (which I doubt), he’s probably going to be a below average LF’er. If he were to play CF, his bat could potentially be an asset, but from what I’ve seen so far, I don’t think Pie would ever displace Jones in Center.

I guess if he suddenly learns how to hit at the ML level he would have trade value, but I think it’s a stretch to ever expect anything from him.

Few things

1) How does some lady in Iowa know anything about how much heart the entire town of Baltimore has?

2) Why does this same lady in Iowa think we hate Felix Pie? A lot of people on this blog are advocates of Pie being given a fair chance and are quite vocal about.

3) Rosana, why are you so hostile? Get to know us, we’re great!

Wow

Rosana we can sit down and talk about this. As stated above MANY times, nobody here hates your boy Felix. I have actually relaxed my views on the guy because I do believe he has all the heart in the world…which goes further with me than with many of my fellow CC’ers. Stop being so defensive and just state your case.

P.S.-We have a LF prospect named Nolan Reimold who needs the at-bats and playing time that Felix was getting. I hope Pie gets a full-time shot…with another team though.

oh man

Oh man the only thing that really bothered me was that line about Baltimore. That seemed like a real shot at Baltimore, not anything to do with Pie.

Pie doesn’t even wear socks anymore. I stopped trying to be encouraging in regards to him.

But I think he’s better than Reimhold is right now. And if I was filling line ups, he’d be my starting LF at least to the all star break.
