Catching Up With Eric Davis

A nice piece from the Baltimore Sun on Eric Davis:

Catching Up with Eric Davis

And, as filler, a public service reminder to everyone (especially as you get older) to have a colonoscopy. It's not a lot of fun, but it's necessary. Several years ago I lost a colleague, the brilliant historian Lawrence Levine, to colon cancer. Davis's heroic recovery and example tell one joyful story, but there are a lot of sad ones out there too.

TMI

Got scoped this year. It was no big deal. Easily worth it to save your life.

Has there ever been a cooler Oriole than Eddie Murray? I mean, just straight up cool. Like a bad, suave dude. You know what I'm sayin'. COOL. SC 7/24/08

the brilliant historian Lawrence Levine

Levine’s book Highbrow/Lowbrow inspired my dissertation.

Are you a historian, birdman?

That’s a great book. Larry was a fantastic historian and a very generous, supportive colleague — even though he was a big shot at Berkeley, after he retired there he took a half-time job at George Mason and remained active and deeply involved in the department and graduate education. He could have treated the job as a sinecure, but instead he took on more than his share of teaching and advising and a whole host of informal responsibilities that really improved the department and the university. His colon cancer was completely asymptomatic, so it wasn’t detected until it was too late.

Nope, I’m a sociologist but I read Lowbrow/Highbrow when I first arrived in graduate school. Loved it. I’m very sad to hear about his passing.

I remember a homerun

that Davis launched in Camden Yards that actually hit off the ivy wall beyond center field. I know that doesn’t happen often (if ever besides that time), so it really caught my attention when I was younger. What a shot!

I know it happened

at least one other time, off the bat of Darryl Strawberry in 98.

I wonder if Davis ever actually did it

or if I am just confusing childhood memories and thought that it was Davis all this time. I hate doubting myself, but my memory is that of a fish!

Even if Davis didn't

he was a hell of a ballplayer and was great for the Os. The fact that he even got on the field, dealing with what he did, was downright inspiring.

I had a friend who worked as a bartender at a restaurant near the stadium when Davis played for the Os, and apparently lots of athletes came in there. He said Davis was probably the nicest guy by far, and always left hefty tips.

Thinking of Strawberry and Davis together has put me in mind of this fantastic article by Ralph Wiley:

It sure was

I was at the game. Ponson pitched, if I recall correctly, and looked good. Os won. The ball Strawberry hit was easily the hardest hit ball I’ve ever seen. They announced on the PA that it was the longest HR in OPACY history at 465 feet. If the wall hadn’t been there I’m sure it could’ve cleared 500.

I remember

a GS he hit. It might have been in yankee stadium, maybe Camden, dont remember. I just remember it was on TV in northern Jersey and it was my Eric Davis moment. I loved him ever since. The dude rocked, and I see alot of him in AJ. E.D. was a guy that it was soooo easy to root for. What a guy.

Oh yea, and there was the hitting streak. Dude could hit.

AJ and ED are so similar as players it’s crazy. I thought that ever since I saw Adam swing a bat. Glad you pic’d that. They do look a ton alike.

Not real positive about the O’s coaching at this point.

Catching Up With Eric Davis

Everytime I see that headline I think “I bet you still couldn’t catch Eric Davis”.

I still can picture the first time I watched him leg out a double as a Red in Veterans Stadium. The thing that made Davis even better was his head has always been screwed on properly. Jones seems to be following suit. I hope he too stays the same.
