GameThread: Orioles (16-23) @ Yankees (22-17)

I try not to be petty, but I'll admit that I'm plum tickled by how bad Phil Hughes is. Think of all the guys they could've traded him for. Now he's just a scrub.

Cesar Izturis is "unlikely" again today, not that Robby Andino is some huge downgrade. They're basically the same dude right now.

A question about the most storied new stadium of the most storied franchise

Did the old most storied stadium have that huge-ass “YANKEE STADIUM” next to the scoreboard, as if people could forget where they are and they need to look and be reminded? I saw it way out in the back, on top of some ad billboards far above left-center.

Is there something like this at OPACY? On the interior, that is. I cannot recall ever seeing something like it.

An O's epiphany

I just had this thought that for the past five or so years, the Orioles organization has extended Spring Training for the whole regular season. Tonight’s game only reinforces that sense. When is Guthrie going to get it together? Or is this what we are to expect for the full year?

by Fred Sanford on May 20, 2009 7:55 PM EDT reply actions

You may want to expect this for the rest of his career

Let’s face it, Guthrie was a bit of a Cinderella story to begin with, so eventually the clock had to strike midnight or the pixie dust had to wear off or however that story goes.

by dkdc on May 20, 2009 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Guthrie had two solid years

ERA+ of 125 over 62 G, over 300 IP. This season, not so good…but it’s still a small sample size compared to the past two years. I don’t know that 40 bad innings signal the end of a Cinderella story compared to 400 good innings.

I’ll tune the team in some time next week. Maybe by next week, they will have worked on some of the fundamentals that they seem to have skipped in Florida.
This is not Major League Baseball right now and this comes from someone who has followed the O’s (mostly happily) since the mid 1970s.

Look at the changes that have been made in the last two years.

Remember how bad it had been for the 10 years before, notice a AAA team that is actually winning, MiL pitchers that aren’t Radhames Liz or DCab, and prospects from AAA to Delmarva that are actually producing, unlike prior years.

Maybe everyone should take 2 steps back from the O’s and see what’s coming up instead of burying their head in the sand and moaning about every goddamn thing that goes wrong.

I have followed the minors as much as anyone over the past few years

But until the organization actually starts winning on a consistent basis, then we have no reason to believe that anything has changed. The organization has apparently improved, but how could they possible have gotten any worse? There have been strides made, but every night there is a new bone to be picked, and as a Ravens fan, I can tell you with confidence that these issues do not arise with every franchise.

Loewen, Penn, and DCab/Olson were just as promising as Matusz/Tillman/Arrieta are now.

To accuse Orioles fans of complaining too much is ridiculous as we’re still watching a meaningless game in May after being absolutely abused by ownership for over a decade.

It’s games like tonight which deserve bitching and moaning.

by Baltimo on May 20, 2009 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

There is some difference

WE, internally, valued guys like DCabs, Olsen, Loewen, Penn. They got some love from the people who make a living out of watching the minors. But we have not, in the past decade, had a minor league system as well regarded by those with no stake in it as we do now. From 98 to now, we have not had a prospect like Wieters or nearly as many potential pitchers.

And there HAVE been worse Oriole teams than this one in the past decade. Go back and look at, say, the 2003 vintage of the Orioles, where the best regular was Jeff Conine. We ARE making progress, not as fast as any of us would like.

In 2003, we didn’t have Nick, Dr. Jones, Nolan, Wieters. We had Bedard coming, but we didn’t have Tillman/Arrieta/Matusz/Hernadnez/Spoone/Erbe/etc etc. There are qualitative differences between then and now.

I feel your frustration, I do. But this organization is getting better, and I think we’re going to turn the corner soon.

Actually

I was the one who called you out on that, and it wasn’t your negativity. We’re all negative from time to time. It was the fact that you were saying OVER AND OVER AND OVER again that the guys just didn’t care and didn’t try and always roll over on the last game and all this. And it was like the 2nd week of the season. I’ve grown to like you, buddy, but when you first got here you were a broken record about a few things.

I am generally positive, and hopeful for the future yada yada yada, but sometimes the anger just builds up and boom! it comes out. I just have to patiently wait for Wieters and the young guns to come up within the next 24 to 36 months, but after 120+ months, you just kind of get irritated.

And as far as Guts, I think it’s stupid to trash on the only real respectable pitcher we had last year and that we got for absolutely nothing, but whatever. this shit isnt easy to watch.

That homer will buy Wigginton 15 consecutive starts over Pie in Trembley’s book.

Ty has played 2 more games than Pie.

And that’s mostly because he was in when Mora was out…and Pie has had to split time with Montanez, Scott, and Reimold.

And Pie could be in left. Hell, I would rather see Pie DH than Ty Wigginton.

If Reimold wasnt up

then I’d be all for letting Pie play as much as possible. However, if he’s up I want him in LF. I dont like bringing up an actual living breathing positional prospect and making him sit half the game.

by daveh873 on May 20, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Which is why Reimold shouldn't have been called up

I understand the situation with Scott/Jones meant that someone had to be called up, but by bringing Nolan to Baltimore you’re compromising someone’s playing time, and I just think that the Pie experiment should have been allowed to run its course.

If he succeeds, then you have a starting left fielder, if not, then Nolan is waiting in Norfolk.

I think if Montanez hadn't managed to screw up his thumb

Then Reimold would have stayed in AAA, but when you’ve got 3 OFs that are day to day, you gotta bring up someone

Agreed.

It was a good long one too. Plonking Teix was my second choice. Seeing the South Florida definition of communism on this gamethread was third. Is high school still mandatory down there?

reimold getting his first homer

whenever in the game it happens, it is still special for him. Good thing to get off his chest.

man...

when I said Nolan would hit one and it would make this game watchable, I was hoping it wouldnt be completely meaningless and long after the game was still a game.

The reality is

Does anyone really care? We basically track individual progression rather than the team’s performance.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

Its true

i’d still like to see them win once in a while though, meaningless or not.

We get the Nats this weekend, at least.

That'll be fun to watch!

The battle of the bullpens will be epic.

As will Rob Dibble's commentary.

I was watching the Nats game Monday night and he sounded like he wanted to shoot himself.

Watching the Nats game?

Or suicidal because of a shitty bullpen?

Nats bullpen

Is amazingly terrible…it’s almost mesmerizing watching the walks and wild pitches and bizarre shit that happens.

And they've added DCab to that hot mess.

That should be, um, interesting, to say the least…or he’ll turn into a lights out closer for a couple years a la Jose Mesa.

Daniel Cabrera is considered an improvement.

That should give you an idea.

The Orioles' pen is just bad

The Nats’ is beyond that … it’s hard to describe … it’s like a Twilight Zone episode, or one of those dreams where you keep trying and trying to do something, but stranger and stranger obstacles keep coming up that prevent you from ever doing it (in this case, winning a game).

Oh look, statistics

http://www.fangraphs.com/teams.aspx?pos=all&stats=rel&lg=all&type=1&season=2009&month=0

Gnat’s bullpen: 6.68/1.76, worst in MLB. Worst K/BB at 1.26.

Goddamnit

I was watching this at the bar, and I left at the end of the 8th. So I missed the one good thing that happened, and had to suffer through YABM (yet another bullpen meltdown)
