Jason Berken the next call-up?
Given the season-long problems that the starters have had, it is likely that the next waive of call-ups will be sooner than later. We know this: Guthrie, Uehara, Hill, and Bergesen will likely remain in place barring injury/sucktitude. This leaves only one spot remaining, assuming management does the right thing and parts ways with Mr. Eaton.
There are many different scenarios that could develop for that fifth spot. We could use up our remaining stop-gaps from AAA, those being Chris Waters and David Pauley. This would be ok, although most here agree that neither of these two is a long-term solution in any way.
We could make a bold move and call-up one of the coveted youngsters from AAA, those being Chris Tillman and David Hernandez. Many here at CC (including myself) would advise against this. Both pitchers have things to work on which is well known among the Oriole informed.
That leaves the final starter not mentioned from AAA-Jason Berken. With all of the pitching talent in our minor league system, someone like Berken can easily go overlooked (similar to Brad Bergesen's rapid ascent). This is understandable given his relatively inauspicious beginnings. Jason was a sixth-round draft pick out of Clemson with basically average size and average stuff. His first two seasons (2006 and 2007) were spent in Aberdeen and Frederick respectively, where he showed more averageness. It wasn't until last year when Berken was with the Bowie Baysox that he began to open some eyes. In 145 innings, Berken walked only 38 batters and struck out 125 while going 12-4 with a 3.58 ERA.
This season Berken began at AA Bowie again, but this lasted only two relatively mediocre starts. Since his promotion to AAA Norfolk Jason has made 5 starts, going 2-0 with a minuscule 1.05 ERA!! This is remarkable and definitely will not continue, but Berken has at least served notice that he should be considered for the next call-up. Nobody expected much from him, so like Bergesen anything we can get is basically a bonus.
So there are the options. Who should get the call? A "veteran" who is likely to not succeed? A youngster who is likely not ready? Or the guy in the middle of it all who is the most unlikely to have made it this far? Your thoughts please...

My post
is virtually saying the same thing as Graham’s that was made an hour before mine. I just didn’t notice it, sorry all.

Berken maybe..
Chris Waters, 28 (4-2, 4.74 ERA). The lefty has big-league experience, but hasn’t put up big numbers this year and is only a stop-gap solution. do we really want another stop gap.
Chris Tillman, 21 (5-0, 2.25). The club’s top pitching prospect is dominating, but he’s just 21 with seven AAA starts. too young, maybe later
David Hernandez, 24 (3-1, 3.50). He also only has seven career Triple-A starts and doesn’t have an impressive pedigree, but he’s struck out 46 in 36 innings. possibly but I’d like to see him stay in AAA just a bit longer.
David Pauley, 25 (3-3, 3.96). Also has big-league experience, but has been only OK at AAA after a rough spring. Same as Waters.
Jason Berken, 25 (2-0, 1.05). Been great in five Norfolk starts since promotion, but is behind several others on the depth chart. Might just be our best bet if not trying Bass out for a start or two

I couldnt' agree more
with your assessments. I never even thought about Bass, which seems like a viable option. Only problem there is we need an effective long-man, which Bass has sort of settled in to. I hesitate to make that move and risk rendering him useless again.

Yep, the only drawback to trying Bass is that fact

I mostly agree
I do think Waters is on a different (much lower) plane than any of these other guys because he’s never really had success anywhere. He’s still sporting a career 5.30 ERA at AAA.
Pauley is a much better option than Waters, IMO. He’s had success at AAA for several years and his groundball style might play in the majors a la Bergesen.
It’s also worth noting that neither Pauley nor Berken are on the 40-man roster, which gives Hernandez (and Patton) an advantage.
I’m going to guess it will be Hernandez.

Your guess may be right
because I don’t see the O’s rushing Patton up to the Majors straight out of Bowie. Even though Patton is completely overmatching the hitters down there, they will ease him up the organizational ladder gently. Look for him to replace the guy who is eventually chosen in Norfolk. Although we could also see Patton sometime later this season. Boy do I love the options we now have!

Eaton has been released
Albers recalled, per Rotoworld.
I guess they are delaying the decision by recalling Albers.

his turn doesn’t come up until tuesday.
fwiw, i like the idea of calling berken to make starts and using hernandez from the pen this year.

hernandez a reliever?
I don’t think the orioles would bring any of their young talented starters up just to be a reliever. It would be better for them to stay in the minors as a starter then come up to the majors as a reliever.
