Farm system update - 5/22/09
I am sure that much of this was at least mentioned in the game thread, but today was a busy day for many of our prospects. And here, we, go.
Delmarva Shorebirds (A)-There has been some mention here about the Delmarva starters, but for those who don't know they are Filthy! Cole McCurry pitched berry well today (and has all season) as the Shorebirds defeated Kannapolis 6-2. McCurry went seven strong innings, allowing only 3 hits and a single earned run. He is now 3-2 on the year with a 1.62 ERA.
Frederick Keys (Advanced A)-Frederick had a lot of work to do today, as they played two against the Kinston Indians. Game one was actually the completion of a suspended game from May 17, as the Keys were victorious 9-4. Zach Britton got the win and is now 2-1 with a 2.66 ERA. Frederick also managed to take game two, this time 5-4 in seven innings. The much maligned Bill Rowell chipped in two RBI in the win and is showing some signs of improvement this year.
Bowie Baysox (AA)-The lack of offense in Bowie was on display, as the Baysox were the only affiliate to lose today. Harrisburg got the win 3-2 despite another strong outing by Jake Arrieta. His line: 6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 9 K. All three of the Senator's runs came in a rough first inning for Arrieta which saw him yield a two-run shot to one of Harrisburg's more formidable hitters. The loss was Jake's second on the year against four wins, with a sporty 2.97 ERA.
Norfolk Tides (AAA)-In perhaps his most dominant outing to date, David Hernandez made his case for a call-up in a 4-3 Norfolk victory. The hard-throwing righty went deeper into the game than I can ever recall, pitching into the 8th inning. Hernandez was in the process of pitching a gem when the Norfolk defense let him down, allowing 3 unearned runs to cross the plate in the eighth. Hernandez was pulled and did not receive a decision, but that didn't really matter in the big scheme of things. Matt Wieters (some of you may have heard this name in passing) continued his hot streak, going 2-4 with a double and a run batted in.

Another deep game by Arrieta
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

Out of all of the Orioles prospects
Hernandez was just (insert adjective)! The guy definitely made a case for the vacant rotation spot in which “that guy” used to occupy. Ladies and gentlemen, you are now witnessing the cavalry making its presence. First Bergy, then Reimold, and now possibly Hernandez.

John Sickels has named Hernandez a sleeper prospect for the last couple of season. He seems to get a lot of strikouts and I could see him being a very solid back end to the rotation. Hopefully he takes Eaton’s spot I’m excited to see what he can do in the majors.

Rising Pitch Counts Means Promotion
So…I wouldnt be surprised if Hernandez was called up to the majors, while Arrieta is on his way to Triple A

If I taught elementary school, I would bring a class to a Norfolk game so the children could touch Wieters' robe.

HIghlights from the Norfolk game

They only show a few of Hernandez’s K’s – mostly high heat but there’s also one really nice looking offspeed pitch (slider?).
Why does this guy get no respect? He didn’t even make the O’s BA top 10 list this year. And now he’s sitting on a 60/13 K/BB rate in his first 43 innings at AAA.
I hope he’s pitching with a chip on his shoulder.

As long as that chip
is not an impingement…then yes.

Why does this guy get no respect?
I think he’s seen as Garrett Olson part II, weak stuff, relies on a lot of deception.

He has pretty good stuff, actually
There are questions about his stamina, depth of repertoire, and command, but he has two very good pitches that are better than anything that Olson has to offer.

That's my impression
This year the walks are under control, which is great sign, but last year he walked 4.5 per 9 — you’ve got to be a little concerned about how that’s going to play in the majors where the zone can be much tighter and the hitters more selective.
I haven’t seen him, but Sickels describes him as a fastball/curveball guy who needs to work on his command and his changeup.

Nice clip
I see bone-headed running is not limited to the top of the organization, either.

wait up...
so david hernandez had double digit strikeouts and THAT didn’t make the write up? in any case, yeah, let’s see him in the show, huh?!

Yeah, I was in the middle
of the write up, switching back and forth from site to site, raving in my mind about David’s 14 K’s! Then I just decided not to include that very important piece of information.
So, one more time for those who don’t know yet: Dave Hernandez struck out 14 Redwings on 5/22/09!!

that IS pretty terriffic...
the orioles are in sore need of a strikeout artist in the rotation. is hernandez really a power pitcher? i know he has a very good fastball, but the two aren’t necessarily equal, y’know?

Well I am flattered.
Seriously, that is the coolest thing I have seen all day, besides the O’s victory of course.

Nice Update!
I saw Brandon Snyder jack a grand slam out in the 4th inning. John Stearns, manager of the Senators walked over to our section at the bottom of the inning and told us " We just got Hank Aaroned". Keep an eye on this kid. He is getting better every game.
