Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

O's 7, Jays 2: DID YOU HEAR THAT MATT WIETERS WILL BE HERE ON FRIDAY?!?!?!?

Tonight was MASN Blogger's night at Camden Yards and I was in attendance with several other bloggers, both from this site and others. I'm going to write all about that when I'm finished with this game recap, don't you worry.

MATT WIETERS IS COMING!

Jason Berken made his major league debut and pitched 5 innings, giving up two runs on 7 hits while walking 3 and striking out 3. He earned his first major league win and held his own. He didn't look dominant and his control didn't seem great, but he was, as far as I'm concerned, five million times better than Adam Eaton.

HE'LL BE HERE FRIDAY!

The O's offense was back in full swing as Aubrey Huff, Adam Jones, and Nolan Reimold all homered for the good guys. Brian Roberts also got in on the action with three hits, including a double. In fact, every Orioles in the lineup tonight had at least one hit.

DO YOU THINK HE'LL HIT A HOME RUN IN HIS FIRST GAME?

The O's win extended the Jays' losing streak to 8 and ensured the Orioles their second straight series win. The final game of the series is tomorrow at 1:35 as Rich Hill faces off against Roy Halladay.

I CAN'T BELIEVE WIETERS DAY IS ALMOST HERE AT LAST!

Nah.

He’s preemptive MBP for Friday… for being called up.

did WIETERS get his own automatic bid?

I know ZAUN did. That might have been a miscalculation on our part.

perhaps he should

because that wouldn’t be fair to the other Rook call-ups to include WIETERS in the mid-season call-up MBPs

I dont really know if its going to matter

I’m pretty sure its gonna be between AJ and Matt, unless Matt falls on his face or someone pitches 3 perfect games or Nicky just goes on an all out unprecedented tear. Everyone here is in love with AJ, and to some degree, popularity is indicitive of Birdlandness. Its about being likeable and great, right? And I dont tink anyone thought he’d improve this much, this fast, so its unexpected too.

Well to be fair

Unexpectedly improving this much this fast is indeed Birdland.

by Gorilla Bird on May 27, 2009 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

that was my point

i’m saying AJ totally deserves it and, barring something miraculous, I doubt anyone else is gonna really be in the running for MBP 09 other than AJ and maybe Wieters

DUDE!

Berken with a fine outing, and WIETERS (if ZAUN gets caps, so does WIETERS)! I just got alot more excited about this team. Our rotation went from:

Guts, Koji, Simon, Hendo, Eaton

to

Guts, Koji, Hill, Berken, Bergesen

and now WIETERS!? AWESOME.

I’m really starting to feel like these past 11 years of putting up with shit from everyone may actually pay off.

So how was the blogger event?

Was the guy from mattwietersfacts.com there by any chance? :)

Matt Wieters broke a bat last night. The handle was the only part that could be found.

I agree with the MacPhail being MBP, but also the guys in the picture are pretty birdland, hey there’s too many of us and not enough letters in BERKEN, what should we do?? Oh yeah an exclamation point.. If that’s not birdland I do not know what is..

What up?

Punctuation marks are Birdland.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

Glad to see Berken leading. Winning your major league debut is BIRDLAND!

Nolan Reimold can hit.

Melvin Mora irritates the shat out of me. Not scoring from third on that tough grounder up the middle is BS. I’m trying not to curse as much damn it.

Since there seems to be confusion about the Super Two business

I refer you to Cots Baseball Contracts excellent transaction glossary

Arbitration
A player and club who cannot agree on a contract may agree to salary arbitration, provided the player has enough Major League service time. CBA, Article VI F.
Eligibility
The following players are eligible for arbitration:
    * Players with at least 3 but less than 6 years of Major League service time.
    * The top 17 percent of players with at least 2 but less than 3 years of Major League service. (See Super 2). To qualify as a Super 2, a player must have accumulated at least 86 days of service in the previous year. (A year of service is 172 days. The historical cutoff point for Super 2 status is 2 years, 128 days of service, though the requirement has been as high as 2 years, 140 days.)
    * Players who have filed for free agency and both received and accepted offers of arbitration from their former club.

I almost made him an option

But I figure once he gets here no one else will stand a chance at ever winning it again, so might as well give them a chance while they still have one.

probably a good choice

All my O’s fan friends on facebook are going absolutely bananas right now. If I could get off work I would take off for the game on Friday without a doubt. Sadly, I’m stuck in New York. This is probably the first time I’ve uttered that phrase. Wieters rules.

PS

I voted for Reimold. I figure I was obsessed with him long enough I might as well.

by pipkin on May 27, 2009 1:08 AM EDT up reply actions

better than being obsessed with Montanez

Reimold > Pie > Montanez

Goddammit

Who the hell is Jason Berken again? Since when do the Orioles have so many young pitchers with, ya know, potential? Kinda cool.

I was about to try to put the brakes on expectations

But, I dunno, his numbers look pretty good, minor-league wise. Then again, he’s been old for his leagues. I’m guessing the scouting report isn’t too impressive. But hey, I’m in an optimistic mood.

OMG! OMG! OMG! MATT WIETERS IS DEBUTING FRIDAY!!! OMG! OMG! OMG!!!!!!

I’m traveling up to Delaware for my nieces graduation, and I haven’t been to a game in 4 years, and i was kind of wishy washy about going to a game, but this changes everything. I am gonna find a way some how to get to that game.

by WilmingtonNC on May 27, 2009 2:07 AM EDT reply actions

I need to get to that game

I just have to find out how to get off work or work the day shift. Thankfully I work the Opening-to-shift-change shift tomorrow so I’ll see a lot of people who might want Saturday off.

Can we vote Wieters MBP already?

If this kid hits right out of the gate, it could be like Piazza 1993. I don’t know if he has 35 homers in the 300ish ABs he will get for the balance of the year, but it will be great to see another young major talent in the field.

anyone notice

how many of those kids think its cool to show half your boxers? Didnt that die about 10 years ago?

Still, rep’ing Berken! is Birdland as all hell.
