Catcher to be dropped...?

Even though it probably won't turn out like this...I belive Zaun not Moeller should be cut on friday. When Wieters comes up he would have previously (this year in AAA) caught 3 of the new rotation starters; Bergeson, Berken, and now Hernandez. Guthrie has previously stated that he prefers Moeller as his catcher and Moeller has now caught all three of Hill's games. Moeller has almost put up the same amount of production as Zaun in much more limited time. I might be underestimating Zaun's experience as a factor, but then again Moeller is 34 and knows what he's doing too...thoughts?

Things I left out: Zaun's cool hat, his relationship with Koji, and that he is a switch-hitter.

Moeller will be dropped

Trembley said he would try to pair Guthrie and Moeller because it seems to work, but Guthrie explicitly said he doesn’t want a “personal catcher” and that he wants to be able to work with both of them. Zaun and Moeller are both pretty much useless with the bat, and Zaun is an established MLB player who’s more likely to regress to his mean of mediocrity (though not guaranteed, given his age). Zaun also seems like more of the “mentor,” so I guess he has those all-important clubhouse intangibles going too. Plus I heard he was someone’s nephew.

Some of these things don’t actually matter very much, and some actually do, but they add up that Zaun will still be around.

He is Rick Dempsey's nephew

And I agree its gonna be moeller that gets the axe

Why wasn't I told this????

I coulda sworn he was Cesar Iztuiris’ step-brother. You sure about that?

Tip for the newbies: when we say we’ve heard zaun’s related to someone on the team, we really do know he’s Dempsey nephew. He’s mentioned a few times.

And Jim Palmer once saw Luke Scott hit in Round Rock

"In a couple of weeks or a month, I'll be excited about this team," Dawkins said. "I've got to get used to saying that -- I'm a Bronco." Then he paused. "I'll tell you one thing -- I'll always be an Eagle."

Duck

it would be much more fun to keep playing out the string just to make the newbies keep telling us he’s Dempsey’s nephew.

our boy who got banned said I was a loudmouth from NJ. Now, everyone on here know’s I’m from teh Shore, and he couldn’t have been more wrong about where I live. So, I went with that.

I’ve come to love NJ as I see it at 75 mph on the Turnpike on my way to Long Island….

Zaun is going to stay

If you haven’t noticed, he’s put up some decent offensive numbers in May – and i don’t know if this makes a difference, but Zaun seems to be more of a leader in the clubhouse. And to finish it off – Zaun was first in and bought into his role from Day 1 with the knowledge that Wieters is his replacement… and actually embraced it (although i’m not saying that Moeller has not)

Also an important factor

Zaun is making more money. It’s not the be-all-end-all (see: Gibbons, Jay), but it can’t be ignored. I think they’ll ask Moeller to accept a minor league assignment and hope that he’ll join Banana Hammock at Norfolk.

You dont pay a guy 1.5 mil to play 50 games

I knew the answer to this when I posted this, its just I’ve never liked Zaun and personally think Moellers the better backup.

Guts

the last thing that guy needs, if history is any indication, is a light hitting personal catcher. Dude’s gonna see WIETERS hit his first broken bat 6 run homer and wet his pants. Run support + Guts is a good thing.

ZAUN, no question

Zaunie has about as good of knowledge of AL hitters and particularly AL East hitters as anyone out there. Now we are gonna sit that well of knowledge on the bench and let him naturally decompose. Its organic.

BUT...

Moeller started last year for the most storied franchise in the galaxy! Surely he has some insight into the inner workings of the universe!?

If that were true

Lee Mazzilli and Karim Garcia would’ve led this team to the promised land in ’04.

I forgot about him too, until the WBC...

He played in Korea last year. From baseball-reference.com:

Garcia signed with the Lotte Giants in 2008 (managed by Jerry Royster) and quickly earned the nickname “The Latino Bambino”, slugging .857 in his first four games in the Korea Baseball Organization. He finished with a batting line of .283/.353/.541 with 30 homers and 111 RBI. He got the most votes for KBO MVP of anyone not named Kim, getting 5 of 94 votes and finishing behind Kwang-hyun Kim, Hyun-soo Kim and Tae-kyun Kim. He led the KBO in RBI, 7 ahead of Dong-joo Kim and was one homer behind leader Tae-kyun Kim.

I especially like the qualifier that he received more MVP votes than anyone “not named Kim.” Way to go Karim!

Neither one’s hitting well, but Zaun seems better defensively, at least blocking wild pitches. Between that, and having attended Andy MacPhail’s Vacation Bible School when he was a lad, I think he’s the one who stays.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

you don't need a therapist.

You just need Matt Wieters…

Or John Gibbons.

This is all just about Wieters

And he’ll probably learn more from Zaun; I should note that I frankly don’t know enough to make this statement, but the organization was pretty confident in Zaun’s mentoring ability.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

His veteran wiliness may save his job,

but batting .214 renders him merely ZAUN zaun.
