Trade Candidates
The youth of tomorrow are here! ...Today!
As it stands, the Orioles have some solid veteran pieces to be traded sooner-than-later. The rotation is eight guys deep and could use some thinning out (Guthrie and Hendrickson, first and foremost), the bullpen (Baez and Ray) is overcrowded, and Mora, Huff, and Scott are at their peak. Its time to suggest some trades.
As for fill-ins:
Dorta could be brought up to fill-in at third if Mora's traded, even though Dorta was promoted to Triple-A recently and might not be ready. So, with third there's a bit of a problem unless the Os can get a major league ready third baseman in a trade somewhere.
Oscar Salazar can be brought up to play first if Huff's traded. Defense would be sorely lacking, but, again, they could get a major league ready guy in trade to take over.
What options are there?

Gots to gO's
I agree that Mora is as valuable as he’s going to be, but I think he’s on the down side of his peak at best. I just don’t see anyone out there with anything to give that would want to make a move for him.
I think Huff and Baez and/or Sherril are must trades. Huff’s been rumored all over the place, from San Francisco to the Mets, even the hated Red Sox. I like Huff, and I wouldn’t mind the O’s bringing him back while we wait to see if Snyder is the truth, but then again, Huff is about as valuable as he’s going to be, and he’s actually got some folks interested. I’m all for striking while the iron is hot in his case.
There is a place in my heart for Scott, but I feel like he’s going to have value to a contender. Maybe Boston as well, consider David Ortiz couldn’t hit his way out of a wet paper bag at this point. Between the two, I’d rather see Huff moved, as I think he’d bring more in return, but I could be totally wrong on that. I just don’t see Scott as an every day outfielder, and Huff is a legit 1B. That eliminates the NL almost entirely. They should move him if the right offer comes along, but only if the right offer comes along.
Sherril should be moved immediately. He’s stepped his game up and is doing a great job of late, but we’ve seen this play; we know how it ends. There is bound to be a contender looking for a strong set up man/closer, and Sherril can bring back something of value assuming he keeps up his level of output for a couple more weeks.
I’m fine with shipping Baez too, although I very much like him. My concern with moving both Baez and Sherril is that Ray is not ready to close yet, and may not ever regain his form to do so. Maybe we can trade for an arm we feel can be groomed into a closer, maybe we sign a closer in the off season (lol), or maybe Ray locks it down when we really need him. I suppose it doesn’t truly matter, as the O’s aren’t in need of pen support for a playoff run this year, but I’d like to at least have some reason to have hope after the sixth inning when the O’s have the lead.

If...
Huff or Mora goes, Wiggs can fill their spot. If they both go, and no one suitable is obtained. Wiggs takes 3rd and Salazar comes up for 1st. We also have Scott Moore who sucks but can come up and play some 3rd. I dont see Huff as a must trade, and I dont think it’d be terrible to have him on the team for another 2 years.
I think any trades have to amount in positional prospects/players or bullpen guys that are cheap and can be under team control for a couple years (like Sherrill when we obtained him). There are no real salary dump guys in my opinion, except Hendo maybe.

Mora is not going anywhere
He has a no-trade clause, has maybe two years left in him and is nicely settled in in Baltimore. There’s no reason he would accept a trade, he has a large family and a big switch this late in his career would make no sense. Besides I love Mora…

Not necessarily
You don’t think Mora would accept a trade to a contender for the last two months of the season? That’s two months “away” from his family. Not terribly long. I think he’d wave it.

I don't think so...his family is real important to him, and I thinks he just wants stability.

besides...
feliz is putting up memlo comparable offensive numbers this year and his defense is superior. i’d bet they’ll stand pat w/ him and pick up his option.

Hear me out
The Phillies are in dire need of pitching.
The Orioles have Guthrie.
I propose the Os trade Guthrie to the Phillies for some combination of Lou Marson, Jason Donald, Carlos Carrasco, Travis D’Arnaud, Freddy Galvis, Kyle Drabek, and Antonio Bastardo.
Think about it. Guthrie’s not pitching too well this season, the youth troop are coming, Guthrie would be much better in the NL, Carrasco and Bastardo would be ready in a year and can provide the Os more minor league depth to trade for other players, like a slugger.

Trying for another Bedard trade?
It won’t work with the Phillies though…coming of a championship. Can’t see that.
I can see the Log-Jam of starting pitchers we will have soon though.

ah, but...
phillies pitching stinks this year, myers is hurting, hamels and moyer are walking timebombs of different varieties and they have a limited window w/ howard. they are in win now mode.
actually, i think donald and some lower grade stuff would be great for guts.

Exactly
I think a Guthrie trade would yield Donald, Bastardo (because of the name, mostly), and some low level guys. Heck, getting Freddy Galvis and Bastardo would be a haul in and of itself.
There’s no way they’re looking at Guthrie as a Bedard-type ace. He’s a solid #2 at best, but that might be good enough in the AL East where the Mets have no pitching, Braves have no hitting, and the Marlins have forgotten how to play the game.

If the Birds
played in the NL East, we would finish at least .500, maybe slightly better. And I can say that with confidence.
