OK my fellow chatters
As the newest Oriole Hall of Famer prepares to make his MLB debut tomorrow, and then the answer to my question will moot to say the least, I thought I would take this opportunity to ask my fellow O's fanatics on this wonderful site....
Who is your favorite Oriole catcher, besides he who hath, nor requires, no name?
Hoiles?Gil?Quiroz?Dalrymple?Hendricks?Johnson?Others?
For me, it was Andy Etchebarren. Caught tons of great pitchers, had an ok arm, and when I was a kid growing up, that was one of the first long words I learned how to spell....etchebarren.
Your take?

Hoiles
a thousand time, Hoiles.
When we all played ball when I was a kid, I always pretended to be Chris Hoiles. A kid in Ringwood NJ pretending to be Chris Hoiles. Think that happened alot?

From his Wikipedia entry
‘Chris Hoiles went by the clubhouse nickname of “Tractor Mechanic.” Because as his Orioles teammates explained “He just looks like a tractor mechanic.”’
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Looks like he works on a ship!
We have to bring that back the next time we play PHN.

Classic! And I just posted an Ayn Rand reference on another thread. Ooh, kinda scary there...

same with dave growing up Hoiles
but once I was old enough to appreciate the history of the Orioles it became Andy Etchebarren 13 years with the O’s 2 time All Star

Dempsey
I got catcher’s gear for Christmas one year because I wanted to do what he did…yep.

TRACTOR!
Hoiles is #1.
FrootLoops is a common favorite, but he’s way down the list. Only playing 3 seasons with the O’s has something to do with it. Being a much better Tiger than Oriole probably has more…

That's why I gave Tettleton the honorable mention
I liked him a lot even when he wasn’t on the O’s but his short tenure makes it impossible to rank him above Hoiles. If he’d had even two more years that might change things. His batting stance was always a fun one for my brother and me to mimic when we were little.

tie
between charles johnson and hendricks. I wasn’t alive to see hendricks so i can’t really say he’s my favorite.

Charels Johnson?
no offense, i’m just surprised. He sure was awesome before he got to the O’s though.

he was still pretty good for us
“he who hath, nor requires, no name?”
I’m pretty sure Wieters has a name

yea
guess i just dont remember him that fondly. I actually loved the signing. It was right around the time we were talking about getting Piazza, and we got Chuck instead. I was happy with it.

That quote is a play on words
In the movie The Ten Commandments, when Moses played by Charlton Heston comes down from the mountain with the two tablets, he won’t say the name of God…’
He says “he that hath no name”…thus I was referring to Mr Wieters as our new O deity.
OK?

Andy Etchebarren
This mug shot is the first unibrow I ever recall seeing. I was very young, but my older brothers had complete (or nearly so) O’s and Reds sets for many years running. This left an impression on my young mind.

Terry Kennedy
He and Cal were my fav. O’s when I about 10 and was just getting into following baseball. Hoiles was a favorite later, but Kennedy was the first Oriole I really remember liking and following as an individual player – I even had his Starting Lineup action figure.

Hoiles
I grew up with Hoiles behind the plate, so that probably has something to do with it….

Floyd Rayford...mos def
I mean, who ever heard of someone splitting time between catcher & 3rd?

2nd place to Hoiles, and 3rd to Herc’s not-so-secret crush.

Russ Martin and Brandon Inge have done it recently
I’m not sure if anyone else has, though.

It makes some sense
I did it in HS, as a way to give me a break from catching but still keeping my glove in the field. I’m way too short to play 1B, which is the logical alt pos for a C. Plus, our 1B was a great hitter but regularly threw balls into the bleachers, so there was nowhere else to put him.
Yeah, our team kinda sucked.
Matt Wieters broke a bat last night. Nobody knows what happened to the ball.
