GameThread: O's (9-15) @ Blue Jays (17-9)
Baltimore Orioles at Toronto Blue Jays, May 3, 2009 1:07 PM EDT
O's look to avoid the sweep, and hopefully Jeremy Guthrie will be up to the task. I haven't lost faith in him yet. Sadly I won't be here to see it as I have big plans to see the Beyonce movie.

highlights of the review:
“I’d like to call Obsessed a miserable failure, but that would imply this lazy waste of time had some sort of goal it failed to reach. It has nothing. No purpose, no drive, no direction. It just shiftlessly ambles forward buoyed by the assumption everyone will stop to watch a catfight, especially one involving Beyonce Knowles and Ali Larter. I did stop to soak it all in, a few million others will likely do the same, but like me, they’ll leave marveling a movie can feel so empty, useless and pathetic.”
“the most lifeless work of art I have ever encountered”
“I hated every last god-forsaken thing about this depthless copout.”

Whatever I loved it
It won’t win any Oscars but it’s not supposed to. It was mind candy. And eye candy, hello Idris Elba!

I meant to mention that I was curious to hear what you thought
Thats probably the most scathing reviews I’ve ever read, i had a hard time believing it was that bad. Like you said not every movie is going to win an Oscar, but it sounded like that guy wanted to have them arrested just for making the movie.

I wonder what the fine for swinging at the first pitch is...
It’s obviously not high enough.

Let’s not let that happen today. I feel good about this game folks. Baysox are rained out and I am pumped for a big game from Guts

I don’t think they’ve updated it since the SkyDome opened.

He is having a good year but not so good with men in scoring position. The first ball swinging stuff ain’t working.

Seems like everybody's first pitch hacking today
I guess when you’re up against a “strike thrower” that seems like it may be a good idea. Except it’s not worked for most of the guys yet.

In re: to the original post
No one should be giving up on Guthrie! He got off to a slow start last year, and ended up having a very good season. Barring injury, he should be fine.

No one is giving up on Guts by no means. I like the guy. Sound pitcher
With the stuff he has I don’t want to see him “nibbling” and walking guys. He throws to many damn pitches for a guy with heat in the mid 90s.

etc. should help. And by league ERA+ standards, Guthrie was a pretty solid No. 2 the last two years.

I will say this for Pie
He’s gotten more selective about the pitches he takes and the ones he swings at. What’s his BABIP? I seem to recall it’s really low, indicating bad luck more than bad performance.

That was a good start, and one that he’d win at least 60% of the time.

After my "meltdown" of anger with the O's play last Sunday
My expectations are low. Nothing they do anymore surprises or angers me. I observe, comment and move on.
What I do know is this team can not hit in the clutch or with men on base. There is a mental block of failure that has set in when men are on base. Fear of failure I guess. But it is there.
Opposing pitchers are checking the schedule to ensure they get a shot at this O’s lineup. Especially on Sundays. Do you blame them?

As far as Trembley getting tossed
The word has probably gotten out about Walker’s comments toward “Blindman” Hernandez. Thus there is no respect for our hitters or pitchers. We should expect more bad calls going our way until we start punishing some teams at the plate and gaining our respect back

On the other hand, it's been pleasant watching the Rays hand the Sawx their lunch again.
‘Tek has been particularly impressive against steals, throwing one ball well into center field, playfully tossing another one straight up in front of the home plate ump’s mask [!] and refusing to throw at all once. A Rays track meet, basically. Meanwhile, Ortiz looks bewildered at the plate. Youkilis’ fly ball in the 8th drifted out to make it 4-3, sounding considerably closer than the game was. Which is no doubt a great comfort to Sawx fenz.
Penny did a pretty good Sid-with-a-goatee imitation: a rounded mound of good heat and good stuff…for a good loss. Shields went 7 1/3 and looked v. good beating him.
Wanna know who the Sawx daddy is? In his last 50 AB’s vs. Boston prior to today, Longoria has had 7 doubles and 8 HRs. Holy crap.

5-3 Rays final. Six [6] steals for Crawford-- a franchise record, not surpsingly, and it ties the modern MLB record.
Ho-hum, Rays take 3 outta 4 from their favorite beech-iss. Eat poop, Sawx. Again.
