GameDay: Detroit Tigers (27-21) at Baltimore Orioles (23-27)
Detroit Tigers at Baltimore Orioles, May 31, 2009 1:35 PM EDT

It's Sunday, it's Wieters Day +2 and it's a chance for the Orioles to get series win and close out a homestand at 6-1.
Jason Berken makes his second start, and while he threw OK in his first while picking up a win in his debut, it was overshadowed by the unexpected announcement of The Deity's callup. Tuesday was a wet, cold, nasty night, and Jason Berken made it a little better for Orioles fans. Let's see how he improves on 77 degrees and sunny. I hope his pitching matches the weather.
The Orioles will face Edwin Jackson, who's been sneaky good this year. His record is pedstrian (4-3), and it's more evidence why W-L record is almost meaningless. He's sporting a 2.58 ERA over 66.1 IP in 10 starts. His WHIP is 1.12. Ladies and gentlemen, Edwin Jackson is pretty damn good this season.
That said, Let's Go O's!

Bergey's orange jersey ROCKS
Man, I wish they’d wear that 1 day a week. I love the black also, and we don’t need 2 alternate jerseys, but damn, that just looks cool.

Is this the beginning of the end for Berken?
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
Don't you mean a terrible game?
Isn’t Berken the odd man out when Uehara comes up? Furthermore, I just don’t think Berken is that good.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
i'm saying he is the odd man out right now.
But if he pitches a gem today, maybe its worth reconsidering. Bergesen hasn’t exactly been blowing away people either. But it would have to be at least what Bergy did the other night for Berken to force his way in.
Bergy pitches to contact
He’s not gonna be a high K guy. Although he only had 3 Ks Friday, he had ZERO walks. That’s a pretty good K/BB rate no matter how low the Ks are.

Poor choice of words on my part.
I wasn’t so much concerned about the lack of strikeouts, as the fact that the WHIP is still hovering around 1.5 even after that great game. I cant imagine berken staying up in his place, but if Berken pitches great today (and probably in one more start before Koji comes back), he could make it a little tougher decision.
And I'm OK with that
Gee, what really good pitcher isn’t quite as awesome as the rest?….
"I’m going to go out and buy pizzas for everybody, and we’re going to have a pajama party out there waiting for Wieters..." - Dave Trembley
Bergesen has definitely secured his spot
In my book.
But anyway, I see your point as a 7/8 inning performance by Berken today could legitimize the idea of sending Koji to the ’pen.
My issue is that one of Hernandez/Berken/Bergesen is likely going to fall apart in the near future, and that rotation spot will need to be filled, presumably by a proven starter in Koji. With the three aforementioned guys already having been called up, we’re going to need to wait until the next wave comes up, and until then, we need stability with Koji.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
Why?
Koji coming back? Man, I don’t know. I like Koji, but he’s used to coming out of the ‘pen. But with Koji being a rightie, it doesn’t exactly solve a problem for us. Jamie Walker’s gotta go, but sicne he’s a lefty, who replaces him?

Hendrickson
I know, I know. But that’s what I think it should be.
I’m smart, not a dummy. ~Adam Jones
As bad as he is...
he’s a lefty.
Now, my ideal solution is to pull two magically-competent lefties out of thin air and send them both packing. But that’s not an option…
"I’m going to go out and buy pizzas for everybody, and we’re going to have a pajama party out there waiting for Wieters..." - Dave Trembley
Berken was a very, very fingey prospect coming into this season, and he has put up one quality game thus far; I wouldn’t hold my breath with this guy. Koji would probably be best utilized as a two inning guy in a tough spot, but he has been too valuable to our rotation.
If Ray had just been good, then we could have kept Sherrill as the LOOGY and dropped Walker.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
Reimold's the odd man out
with Wieters DH’ing day game after a night game. A few days ago I would have said that Reimold should have moved to right to get Nick a day off, but it seems like he’s coming out of his slump and you don’t want to mess with that.
I’m smart, not a dummy. ~Adam Jones
I still would like to see Reimold over Luke in almost every scenario
But I get that Reimold has played every single game over the past week and Luke is on fire.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
I'd love to see your justification for that
Or are you in agreement with WaywardO who says Luke Scott is Jay Gibbons +10 BA points?
"I’m going to go out and buy pizzas for everybody, and we’re going to have a pajama party out there waiting for Wieters..." - Dave Trembley
I like Luke Scott as a player and team member
But he has absolutely no place on this team in 2/3 years when we’ll be contending. By that logic, I would rather have 2011 contributing members like Reimold getting playing time right now, but again, I realize that you can’t bench a guy as hot as Luke.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
In 2011?
Hell yeah, I’d rather have Nolan.
"I’m going to go out and buy pizzas for everybody, and we’re going to have a pajama party out there waiting for Wieters..." - Dave Trembley
We're not going anywhere in 2009
So let the 2011 players get better right now.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
Seems to me they are letting Nolan do that
Isn’t this the first game he hasn’t started since he’s been called up? One day off in 2.5 weeks isn’t exactly sending a message, it’s a day off.

I agree to a point
but, and maybe I just have my Luke Goggles on, in 2011 Luke will be 32/33 years old. If he can thrive as a DH there is no reason he can’t be a contributing member of this team.
I’m smart, not a dummy. ~Adam Jones
That would be ideal
But I don’t think a streaky, platoon type guy will cut it at age 33 on a contending team.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
if he last that long
the tough thing about late arrivers like Scott is they tend to be early retirees, too. Though maybe Scott is establishing a new performance level this year. Youneverknow.

Yeah you really can't deny Luke right now
You just don’t mess with that.

The thing that bugs me
And there’s no solution to it, but it still annoys me, is that late in the game when Zaun is at the plate you can’t PH him.

I'll bet Wiggy would catch....
and Feliz Pie may volunteer just to get into a game.
"I’m going to go out and buy pizzas for everybody, and we’re going to have a pajama party out there waiting for Wieters..." - Dave Trembley
And I wonder why exactly NO ONE on MASN has mentioned that.
That is a pretty big strategic gamble. You’re betting Zaun NEVER gets hurt when he catches? Or even when you need a better bat in the lineup in the 7th, 8th, or 9th?

Hunter & Dempsey
I wonder if this broadcasting combo is why we lose on Sundays.
No, probably not. Actually, I like Jim Hunter, and he has to be feeling pretty good right now to see an Orioles team that’s actually exciting instead of having to muster his optimism and excitement for some of the stuff we’ve seen in recent years.
Will he die from sheer joy if he gets to call Wieters’ first homer? This is a real possibility. I hope someone keeps an eye on him.

I was on an older laptop last night and the game thread was AWFUL towards the end. I’ve never experienced that before. I don’t know if it will be an issue today since it’s a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, but if we get up to a ton of comments I’m going to start an overflow.

Among others...
Look, I’m no Comcast apologiest. I HATE that company. But it’s Comcast AND Time Warner AND DirecTv AND Dish and all of the 23 cable/sat companies that MASN has to deal with to get that 2nd HD channel. They shoot and archive evereything in HD, it’s the channel capacity that’s teh issue.
But sure, hate on Comcast. They are ONE of the reasons the O’s aren’t in HD today.

But the only thing I see out of the ordinary about his batted ball data is that he’s making contact on a lot of pitches out of the zone, despite not actually chasing more bad balls than usual. So, he SHOULD get a hit sometime again this season (regress toward his mean, for those of those who don’t speak snark).
"Do they have people that tall in Mexico?"
Nicely done
I like what Dave said about pitching with poise last week.
PARAPHRASE: “Don’t tell me someone pitched with poise when he wins 3-0. You have poise when you get in trouble and get out of it. If you get a couple of men on, get the guy at the plate out. That’s poise.”
And that’s what Berken just did. Good on ya, Jason.

where we actually have a major league caliber rotation, I’d love to see him in the bullpen. He seems to profile perfectly there.
But as we know, our current rotation is not too strong, and he really has been one of our best SP’s.
I think we DO have a MLB rotation now.

Wow, how does this guy NOT have a job as a manager?
"I’m going to go out and buy pizzas for everybody, and we’re going to have a pajama party out there waiting for Wieters..." - Dave Trembley
Here is what I think
Closers are overrated. If you have a pitcher who can, like Jim said, come in and pitch the 7, 8, and 9 after Guthrie to save the pen for the day game, I think it’s a great idea.
I’m smart, not a dummy. ~Adam Jones
or
a pitcher gets knocked out in the 2nd? Koji comes in and pitches through the 7th. It’s not bad.
I’m smart, not a dummy. ~Adam Jones
That sounds logical
I like to call that role…Brian Bass.
"I’m going to go out and buy pizzas for everybody, and we’re going to have a pajama party out there waiting for Wieters..." - Dave Trembley
And the other is Danys Baez
do we need 3? Not sure…
"I’m going to go out and buy pizzas for everybody, and we’re going to have a pajama party out there waiting for Wieters..." - Dave Trembley
They wouldn't have to pitch that many innings every time
But it can only help to have pitchers who can go longer. What can it possibly hurt? A guy who is capable of going 3 innings can also pitch to 1 or 2 batters if needed. A guy who can only pitch to 1 or 2 batters can’t pitch 3 innings if needed.
I’m smart, not a dummy. ~Adam Jones
And he gets to work MAYBE twice in a week?
How efficient is that? Use him in a Danys role, sure. But 3 innings at a time to close games? Meh…

Koji in the ’pen? I could be down with that.
"I’m going to go out and buy pizzas for everybody, and we’re going to have a pajama party out there waiting for Wieters..." - Dave Trembley
me too...
I think instead of having “starters” and “’pen” just start whoever happens to be the hottest available pitcher and go to the next hottest when that guy runs out of gas during the game. Make the whole game a bullpen game.
Jioe Flaacco, Hon!!! "He’s like a live JUGS machine."
Well that seems a bit extreme
But I’m certainly down with letting bullpen pitchers pitch as long as they’re effective instead of being like “player x pitches the 7th, player y pitches the 8th, player z pitches the 9th”
I’m smart, not a dummy. ~Adam Jones
That's definitely true
Diamond Dave has fallen too much in love with his “slots.”
"I’m going to go out and buy pizzas for everybody, and we’re going to have a pajama party out there waiting for Wieters..." - Dave Trembley

Who’s the best guy right NOW? Unless there’s someone better in the ‘pen, leave the starter in. And Dave did a great job of that DFriday, rookie pitcher and all. Jackson at 87 pitches
Need to get him the heck out of the game. The O’s couldn’t hit him today if they were swinging snowboards.
"Do they have people that tall in Mexico?"
Baez on his way in
Jason Berken pitched a hell of a game today. He deserves better.

Can I risk being burned as a heretic?
Because it seems pretty obvious to me that Weiters is, after all, just a rookie—a very talented rookie, but still someone who has a ways to go before he can go toe to toe with even a moderately capable MLB pitcher on a consistent basis. He’s done all he can do in AAA, true, but he still has a lot to learn at this level.
Let the flaming begin.
I think 3 games is a bit soon
Hell, we gave Felix Pie 3 weeks before we turned on him.

I don't think you're being that unreasonable
But I don’t think it’ll take him long to adjust.

No not too long
Next season, just like AJ.

come on reimold was called out on strikes with a very similar pitch in that toronto game
I know each game had different umps, but come on! ha
ONE damn pitch.
This game’s gonna come down to ONE damn pitch.
Shit.
"I’m going to go out and buy pizzas for everybody, and we’re going to have a pajama party out there waiting for Wieters..." - Dave Trembley
argggggg the tribe were up 4-2!!

I can’t wait to have it! It’s so cute.

I wish I had a Stacey bobblehead
So I could make the play together like barbies.

There’s a joke there, but I’m going to avoid making it so as not to get slapped.

You know....

yeah I know
I had one made for my friend for her birthday. I had to send in pictures of her from all angles and such. It way more giant than any regular bobbleheads though.

Just a long, long out people....
Calm down…
OOOH! ADAM JONES BOBBLEHEAD! I want that!

So, Dempsey's telling us how AJ needs to play deeper
because he just caught a ball in deep CF?

1-0 losses are not fun

Well, at least the top of the lineup comes up in the 9th, most likely.
"I’m going to go out and buy pizzas for everybody, and we’re going to have a pajama party out there waiting for Wieters..." - Dave Trembley
and wasn't reimold just in the on deck circle?
pinch hitting for andino. so andino can stay in the top of the 9th at short still.
'E's not the messiah
’E’s a very naughty boy.
Zaun sucks
I don’t care if he is a veteran or can block the ball or whatever. He sucks. And he looks creepy too.
But at the moment
he’s our best hitting catcher.

watching Greg Zaun
is painful, he is the only hitter who i honestly know isnt going to get a hit

Gosh I hope we can do well on this west coast swing.
Seattle and Oakland just seem really weak. Westcoastosfan, you’re near them, what’s the scoop?
Nice play, B-Rob
Love the rainbow throw.

Because you coudln't throw strikes?
I doubt it was on purpose.
"I’m going to go out and buy pizzas for everybody, and we’re going to have a pajama party out there waiting for Wieters..." - Dave Trembley
My point being
that that is one guy who can’t hurt you any more if you throw him strikes than if you don’t.
by fishoutawata on May 31, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions
That's true.
but sometimes, you just can’t throw it over the plate. It happens.

Get that dastardly .245 career hitter out of the way
And bring up the guy who hit 2 HR last night.
What could be more logical than that?
Ugh.
Berken deserves better. :(

This just in: Zach Greinke has now given up four earned runs and has an ERA over 1 for the first time this season.

I dont believe
in matchups, we should just throw our best pitcher and screw the numbers. Its better then throwing Hendrickson or Walker

The O's get a great crowd for 2 straight games
And end up dropping both barring a ninth inning comeback.

Cause he makes more sense on the bases than Reimold
and cause DD is very optimistic about having to play defense
by fishoutawata on May 31, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions
maybe experience/left handed
instead of Reimold. But I’d much rather have Reimold up. Different take with a 3 run deficit versus 2 run deficit too? Izzy’s goal is just to get on base.
What??
Why pinch hit Izturis? He can’t bat from the left side. Given its the 9th, why not PH Reimold and use Izzy as a defensive substitute if things get that far…
I want the O's to win so badly
But my wish just won’t come true.

Of course, it helps to only have had 4 baserunners :(
