It's Sunday, it's Wieters Day +2 and it's a chance for the Orioles to get series win and close out a homestand at 6-1.

Jason Berken makes his second start, and while he threw OK in his first while picking up a win in his debut, it was overshadowed by the unexpected announcement of The Deity's callup. Tuesday was a wet, cold, nasty night, and Jason Berken made it a little better for Orioles fans. Let's see how he improves on 77 degrees and sunny. I hope his pitching matches the weather.

The Orioles will face Edwin Jackson, who's been sneaky good this year. His record is pedstrian (4-3), and it's more evidence why W-L record is almost meaningless. He's sporting a 2.58 ERA over 66.1 IP in 10 starts. His WHIP is 1.12. Ladies and gentlemen, Edwin Jackson is pretty damn good this season.

That said, Let's Go O's!

Bergey's orange jersey ROCKS

Man, I wish they’d wear that 1 day a week. I love the black also, and we don’t need 2 alternate jerseys, but damn, that just looks cool.

Is this the beginning of the end for Berken?

Don't you mean a terrible game?

Isn’t Berken the odd man out when Uehara comes up? Furthermore, I just don’t think Berken is that good.

i'm saying he is the odd man out right now.

But if he pitches a gem today, maybe its worth reconsidering. Bergesen hasn’t exactly been blowing away people either. But it would have to be at least what Bergy did the other night for Berken to force his way in.

Bergy pitches to contact

He’s not gonna be a high K guy. Although he only had 3 Ks Friday, he had ZERO walks. That’s a pretty good K/BB rate no matter how low the Ks are.

Poor choice of words on my part.

I wasn’t so much concerned about the lack of strikeouts, as the fact that the WHIP is still hovering around 1.5 even after that great game. I cant imagine berken staying up in his place, but if Berken pitches great today (and probably in one more start before Koji comes back), he could make it a little tougher decision.

by kba26 on May 31, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And I'm OK with that

Gee, what really good pitcher isn’t quite as awesome as the rest?….

Bergesen has definitely secured his spot

In my book.

But anyway, I see your point as a 7/8 inning performance by Berken today could legitimize the idea of sending Koji to the ’pen.

My issue is that one of Hernandez/Berken/Bergesen is likely going to fall apart in the near future, and that rotation spot will need to be filled, presumably by a proven starter in Koji. With the three aforementioned guys already having been called up, we’re going to need to wait until the next wave comes up, and until then, we need stability with Koji.

Why?

Koji coming back? Man, I don’t know. I like Koji, but he’s used to coming out of the ‘pen. But with Koji being a rightie, it doesn’t exactly solve a problem for us. Jamie Walker’s gotta go, but sicne he’s a lefty, who replaces him?

As bad as he is...

he’s a lefty.

Now, my ideal solution is to pull two magically-competent lefties out of thin air and send them both packing. But that’s not an option…

Berken was a very, very fingey prospect coming into this season, and he has put up one quality game thus far; I wouldn’t hold my breath with this guy. Koji would probably be best utilized as a two inning guy in a tough spot, but he has been too valuable to our rotation.

If Ray had just been good, then we could have kept Sherrill as the LOOGY and dropped Walker.

Reimold's the odd man out

with Wieters DH’ing day game after a night game. A few days ago I would have said that Reimold should have moved to right to get Nick a day off, but it seems like he’s coming out of his slump and you don’t want to mess with that.

I still would like to see Reimold over Luke in almost every scenario

But I get that Reimold has played every single game over the past week and Luke is on fire.

I like Luke Scott as a player and team member

But he has absolutely no place on this team in 2/3 years when we’ll be contending. By that logic, I would rather have 2011 contributing members like Reimold getting playing time right now, but again, I realize that you can’t bench a guy as hot as Luke.

Hunter & Dempsey

I wonder if this broadcasting combo is why we lose on Sundays.

No, probably not. Actually, I like Jim Hunter, and he has to be feeling pretty good right now to see an Orioles team that’s actually exciting instead of having to muster his optimism and excitement for some of the stuff we’ve seen in recent years.

Will he die from sheer joy if he gets to call Wieters’ first homer? This is a real possibility. I hope someone keeps an eye on him.

See

if Trembley would put more thought into giving guys the day off instead of just giving everyone off on Sunday, he could rest Mora on a day when a lefty is pitching since that’s who Wiggy is best against.

When Mora was on the DL at the beginning of the year Wiggy played every single day and was totally overexposed. I don’t know if that will affect him over the rest of the year, I hope not. I’m not really sure if it would matter.

But the only thing I see out of the ordinary about his batted ball data is that he’s making contact on a lot of pitches out of the zone, despite not actually chasing more bad balls than usual. So, he SHOULD get a hit sometime again this season (regress toward his mean, for those of those who don’t speak snark).

I like what Dave said about pitching with poise last week.

PARAPHRASE: “Don’t tell me someone pitched with poise when he wins 3-0. You have poise when you get in trouble and get out of it. If you get a couple of men on, get the guy at the plate out. That’s poise.”

And that’s what Berken just did. Good on ya, Jason.

where we actually have a major league caliber rotation, I’d love to see him in the bullpen. He seems to profile perfectly there.

But as we know, our current rotation is not too strong, and he really has been one of our best SP’s.

I think we DO have a MLB rotation now.

To me, seriously, Hill is the weak link.

Especially as a lefty. I’m just saying to me, he’s our #5 right now.

And Jim Hunter says Koji should be a 3 inning closer

Wow, how does this guy NOT have a job as a manager?

Here is what I think

Closers are overrated. If you have a pitcher who can, like Jim said, come in and pitch the 7, 8, and 9 after Guthrie to save the pen for the day game, I think it’s a great idea.

or

a pitcher gets knocked out in the 2nd? Koji comes in and pitches through the 7th. It’s not bad.

That sounds logical

I like to call that role…Brian Bass.

And the other is Danys Baez

do we need 3? Not sure…

They wouldn't have to pitch that many innings every time

But it can only help to have pitchers who can go longer. What can it possibly hurt? A guy who is capable of going 3 innings can also pitch to 1 or 2 batters if needed. A guy who can only pitch to 1 or 2 batters can’t pitch 3 innings if needed.

I’m smart, not a dummy. ~Adam Jones

by Stacey on May 31, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And he gets to work MAYBE twice in a week?

How efficient is that? Use him in a Danys role, sure. But 3 innings at a time to close games? Meh…

2 innings as a bridge to the closer sounds fine

But 3 as the closer doesn’t.

me too...

I think instead of having “starters” and “’pen” just start whoever happens to be the hottest available pitcher and go to the next hottest when that guy runs out of gas during the game. Make the whole game a bullpen game.

Well that seems a bit extreme

But I’m certainly down with letting bullpen pitchers pitch as long as they’re effective instead of being like “player x pitches the 7th, player y pitches the 8th, player z pitches the 9th”

The Weaver philosophy

Who’s the best guy right NOW? Unless there’s someone better in the ‘pen, leave the starter in. And Dave did a great job of that DFriday, rookie pitcher and all. He let him go out in the 9th until he showed he didn’t have it. That was a pretty big message he sent Friday to teh young guys – I’ll let you finish what you start.

I've noticed that too

It’s almost like he gets down 0-2 in every at-bat, fights his way back to 2-2 and then gets beat with off-speed stuff. He also seems to lay off the 0-2 fastball that’s totally borderline at the belt.
