How Do You Fill Out Your All Star Ballot?

So there's been a lot of talk lately about Manny and whether he should or shouldn't play the All Star Game and whether or not he'll even make it anyway, but its got me thinking... what goes through the fans' minds when they're punching out the little chads in the middle innings? So I'd like to hear your opinions on how you do it; Is it purely a numbers game, batting lines and OPS? Do you consider only the current season, or overall carreer numbers? Give the edge to young blood, or like to see future hall of famers? Are you highly prejudicial toward PHN and MFY, and partial to the O's, or just want to see the best team on the field? Do you fill out each ballot the same way, or punch in different outfielders or what?

As for me, I don't mind the numbers much at all, and tend to go by carreer name and reputation. At the same time though, its hard to ignore players who are having really good seasons (Ryan Zimmerman) or really bad seasons (Ken Griffey Jr.). I'm definitely partial to the O's, but kind of dubious about whether Huff and Roberts stand up to the competition. And I don't watch hardly any NL games at all.

So CC, what say you? How do you pick 'em?

I vote for all the O’s. We all know it’s a popularity contest.

I wonder if I can bill Jeff Lurie and Peter Angelos for the years of therapy their teams are going to put me through.

I vote all O's and Phillies.

The ASG is a joke, and it becomes moreso each year.

"In a couple of weeks or a month, I'll be excited about this team," Dawkins said. "I've got to get used to saying that -- I'm a Bronco." Then he paused. "I'll tell you one thing -- I'll always be an Eagle."

I know, I know

I know it’s a joke. Still, I just can’t goad myself into not voting guys who I don’t think deserve to be there.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I vote all O's

and skip the NL ballot. Rinse, repeat 24 more times.

I do not vote for all O's

Like am I seriously going to vote for Melvin Mora or Gregg Zaun? But if they’re even close to being all star level, I vote for them. Markakis, Jones, Roberts, Huff, yes. Otherwise I I vote for whoever is doing the best that year. I don’t take into account past years as I think the all star game is about the present. Also once the early tallies come out, if there is someone at the top that I don’t like, I vote for the next closest person who can beat that person.

you really don’t like Mora, Stacey

by NickMarkaces on May 31, 2009 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, I like him fine

But he’s no all star. I voted for Evan Longoria.

Oh, sure, like he DESERVES it or something...

I don't believe in democracy

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

I just voted 25 times

For every O but Zaun + Ichiro. Do i get a free ticket now?

by WestcoastO'sFan on May 31, 2009 10:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

well then

who did you vote in as catcher? and what outfielder did you exclude to include ichiro? or did you write in ichiro at catcher? I’d totally be on board for that.

My approach...

is a lot like what Stacy described above. O’s when they deserve it or are close, and whoever is doing the best at that position, especially those who are underdogs for being voted in but are deserving.

I like All-Star voting – it’s something I enjoyed as a kid when we were lucky enough to go to games and punch paper ballots, and still have a soft-spot for it.

I try to make the best team

then add O’s that are deserving and subtract MFY and PHN players.

Matt Wieters broke a bat last night. Nobody knows what happened to the ball.

me too

I wouldn’t vote for a PHN or MFY player if my life depended on it. But I’m biased toward the O’s so if they’re close I’ll vote them.

I vote for the players that deserve to go. I know it makes no difference but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t.

Yeah

I totally agree

I do to

It may seem corny, but I even vote for the Red Sox and Yankees that I feel deserve to go. I tried being biased once, but my conciense wouldn’t let me submit that tainted ballot, and I did it all over again.

Its a mixed bag

I vote using all those criteria. I vote any O’s that can be argued to deserve it. I’d like to say I vote heavily on numbers too, but I really vote heavily on what I THINK the numbers are, because honestly I cant keep track of who has the better total line on every team in the AL and NL and theres no way i’m sitting here researching every vote I cast. As for lifetime achievement, yea I voted for Cal sometimes when he probably didnt deserve it.

All in all it depends how I feel when I’m casting that vote. Sometimes its more O’s centric, sometimes its hardcore “who deserves it the most”. The way I see it, its all STAR, not just the best. If people want to vote on who’s the most popular, well thats kinda what a star is right?

Oh, and I dont vote in MFY or PHN’s, and usually no BJs either.
