GameThread: Orioles (9-16) @ Rays (11-15)
Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays, May 4, 2009 7:08 PM EDT
The season hasn't started off all too great for Tampa Bay, but they've got enough talent (obviously) to get back in the thick of things -- y'know, if you're one who thinks the thick of things start showing up around 25 games in.
The Orioles have been miserable lately. I'm just saying I've been watching (at least until I can't watch any more), but I literally have nothing new to say and am struggling to find ways to be positive. I get the future, but the present is rotten.

Don't worry man.
Only 138 more games left.

"No son, Hevan is BIRDLAND."
Isn't it sad...
that it is the beginning of May and they are playing like they do in August.. giving up! I will continue to support them, attend games and lie to my children that one day we will be a contender or even finish .500.
One day we will....in 2011
Matt Wieters took batting practice this morning. There were no survivors.
it's funny that you mention it
because I was just thinking earlier today that I actually can’t think of one thing to say about this team. No one thing. And that isn’t an exaggeration.
I’m smart, not a dummy. ~Adam Jones
I'm with you on that.
That’s how I felt before the season started and with the exception of the first week or so…that’s how I have felt since.

Tough sell on this game with the hockey on at the same time. I’ll check in off and on, though.

I know, I shouldn’t say that, but it IS an SBN site at least.
I’ll check in between periods and between commericals on “24”.

This team is miserable to watch right now
No doubt about it.
Reimold and Wieters will be here soon, and some more interesting pitching isn’t far behind, but it’s ugly right now.
I’ll be paying closer attention to the farm tonight: Hill, Arrieta, and Britton are starting for Norfolk, Bowie, and Frederick respectively.
I'd love to see Hill look good
and get up to Baltimore soon. Maybe he’ll suck, but at least he’ll be something different.
I’m smart, not a dummy. ~Adam Jones
He's still a couple weeks away, unfortunately
And that’s a assuming that his rehab continues to go smoothly.
Silver Lining
I, for one, am counting the days until the Wieters/Reimold revolution.
I figure between the nine plus legitimate starting pitchers (note: Hendrickson and Eaton are not included, of course), I should be confident that the O’s will, in the next season or two, find a five-man rotation worth of leading a major league club onto the field. I can be patient for that.
I mean, I can be patient for Reimold and Wieters as well, but by all accounts they’re not just ready to go at this moment, but they’d clearly be significant upgrades over those currently occupying their positions. As I heard some guy on the radio say this weekend, you see a lot of other clubs relying on their young guys and finding great success, but the O’s are worried about ruining their psyche. It’s pretty frustrating.
"BJ on the BE" - Kierkegaard
The minor league players keep me interested at this point.
If the O’s could display some situational hitting when men are in scoring position they could overcome some of those one run loses and win some games. They totally forget how to hit when RBI chances are out there.
But hey folks, just keep watching the youngsters in the minors. That will keep you focused.

I ask this question in all sincerity
I wonder what it’s like psychologically to be a really good, in not exceptional, player like Markakis, Roberts and Jones playing on a team that may in fact lose 100 or more games this year? Do you, by August, just phone it in? Do you hope to be traded? Do such players as this ever go over to the pitching staff and just start screaming at them in clubhouse: Why can’t you SOB’s hold a f-ing lead? We’re getting plenty of f-iong runs for you, when are you going to get some batters out?
Etc.
Is there blame cast behind closed doors? Or are they consummate professionals and oblivious to the general suckitude of the team?
I'd have to think it wears on you
and they’d be only human to point fingers at the pitchers. Of course, that just makes a bad situation even worse.
Matt Wieters took batting practice this morning. There were no survivors.
I agree
It must be difficult. I think sometimes fans have the impression that “what players really want” is money; the biggest contract, the nicest car, etc. That the players (i.e. Markakis) should just be happy with all that money, win or lose. And maybe even start dogging it because they’re rich and who gives a damn.
My guess (and I’m just another fan) is that what most players really want, more than anything else, is to be better than anybody and win.
If you know you are good and the numbers are bearing that out, and you are on a team that is just horrific, it’s going to take a toll on you. You can’t play baseball forever, and at the back of their minds I would think these guys know that.
Think about it. You’ve worked on baseball your entire life, working like a dog, putting in the kind of time that most people don’t have the will to put in. You’re focused, you’re disciplined, you’re committed. You give things up that most people wouldn’t want to part with. You don’t know anything about anything other than baseball. Then you finally make it to the majors and you know from the beginning that you only have a few years to do what you’ve spent literally your whole life preparing yourself for — be good and win at the highest level. I think that’s why players hang on longer than they really should or come out of retirement. I think most people that play in the majors have – in addition to freakish talent – an equally freakish desire to win that would look to a normal person like fanaticism. It’s not the promise of money but the will to win that sustains you through high school, college and the bus leagues. If you went into baseball thinking of it as a get-rich-quick scheme, you quit because you find out it’s just too hard and the odds are too long and you probably just don’t have it.
It must be excruciating, after all that work and dedication, to be on a bad team. And even though part of the whole ethic of sports is “no I in team,” 162 games is a lot of games to be watching the same people around you screw the same things up. And if nothing changes year after year, well, you get Tejada not running out ground balls. There’s always the expectation that you won’t cause clubhouse problems, but I imagine it happens more often than we know and I think it’s understandable. Doesn’t help anybody though, as duck says.

Not Garza, according to the O’s and Rays’ sites.
1933 was a bad year
by Senatorrosewater on May 4, 2009 3:26 PM EDT reply actions
Eaton and Kazmir numbers are almost similar
Kazmire has pitched one more game, has 5 more innings and his ERA is better. However he has walked more, given up almost the same amount of hits, given up run more run and walked 10 more batters. Go get up Eaton!!!
"They are who we thought they were"-Dennis Green
It's all about talent
It would be pointless for Markakis, etc. to berate the pitching staff for its ineptitude. The pitching staff is trying hard. Their problem is not lack of motivation but lack of talent. So, relax. We knew going in that 2009 would be a grizzly season, one that we would be forced to endure in order to get to 2010 and 2011. At least we get to pick 5th this year and perhaps 4th next.
Let's see the conversation would go something like this....
Nick Markakis: What the hell is wrong with you guys? We were up by 2! Can’t you guys hold a 2-run lead for 3 freakin’ innings?
Jamie Walker, Brian Bass and George Sherrill, in unison: No.
And Nick would storm off, wondering why he signed that extension….

Hahah, duck you are funny
Well, I’m at a loss for words.. I guess I’ll offer up the old standard… The Orioles are not good at what they do
hahaha that’s fun to say
John tonight let it be Lowenstein
I wanna stay positive! And tonight, we have Adam Eaton vs. Kazmir...OK, so much for that.
The only positive thing I can think of about the Orioles is, er, this: I had jello today…
Go Caps!
"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." Churchill,1942-- a rebuilding year.
It's not the losing for me.
It’s the way that they lose. I’d be quite content to watch a competitive team battle it out night after night if they were just getting outclassed. Instead, I’m watching a team shut it down offensively & defensively while they wait for the pitching to implode. That’s no fun.
But I’m fine with taking one more blue chip stud in the next two drafts while the previous picks start showing up later this year.
I just keep telling myself that you have to hit rock bottom before you can start to improve. Right now feels about rock bottom – no lead is safe, Jeckyll & Hyde offense.
From the Land of Pleasant Living...
Huh?
They’ve lost a whole slew of one and two run games, it happens…I think everyone needs to take a deep breath and remember what Andy said at the beginning of the season…“It could get ugly, but we want people to be convinced by the end of the year that we have the foundation to contend”

By my calculations
That means we will lose this game if we don’t score some more runs. The math is a little fuzzy, though.
Wow, what a way to start a game: I turned on ESPN for Sawx/Yerks on HD home theatre-- and saw Nicky go 3-run DONG!!
They stayed with the game through Longoria’s shot. But then they started moving their forking “Bonus Coverage” all over creation, making it impossible to follow any single game. Ice-holes. Especially now ,when they’ve got an NPL game on! Y’know, the loser league with the rule that every 9th batter has to be a joke? Who gives a sh*t?

Wigginton has played some LF although not a ton.
Pie is a lefty too
I hope they haven’t given up on him yet… Look at his peripherals…
BB 10%
K 27.8%
LD% 21.6%
These would all be career bests for Felix. He’s not doing great at the plate, but he’s doing way better than his BA and OBP suggest
I totally think
they gave up on him too soon. So weird, I thought they’d stick with him for awhile.

Pie will have more opportunities. He is MacPhails project.
They are committed to him like they were to Dr. Jones in 2008. The fact that the bottom of the order is killing the team warrants them to play someone that has a clue at the plate. When they find that person or person’s they will let us know.
