O's 8, Rays 4: Magic!

Nick Markakis hit a first inning, three-run homer, and Brian Roberts iced it with a two-run shot in the eighth inning, leading the O's to an 8-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on the road. The homers are Markakis' fourth and Roberts' third.

To quote the great Lou Brown of Major League, "We won yesterday. If we win today, that's two in a row. If we win tomorrow, that's called 'a winning streak.' It has happened before."

Adam Eaton (5 IP, 4 ER) has his season ERA at 7.18 now. Danys Baez (2 IP, 0 ER) got the win, with his ERA dropping to 2.30. Jim Johnson and George Sherrill closed it out after the Orioles scored four runs combined in the seventh and eighth innings.

Roberts and Markakis also stole bases, for you small ball fanatics.

I still really have nothing new to say, and I apologize. The front three in the order (Roberts, Jones, Markakis) are doing what the can to carry the team, but nobody else is hitting a whole lot, though Huff is doing, y'know, OK.

Game time tomorrow is 4:08.

I would've voted for Nicky anyway

But I think Baez deserved a nod for MBP.

Yowsa yowsa! How sweet it is: a night when we Didn't Suck! Does that rock or what?!?

A very rare game when I really wanted to vote for 3 guys: Nicky, Danys [!] and, of course, Alex Ovechkin.

In the meantime, I just noticed that Zack Greinke of the, er, Division Leading Kansas City Royals, is totally, completely, off-the-deep-end insane. OK, he’s been a good pitcher for what, 3 years. His 6-game start this year, however, is so sick it makes you wonder whether he snuck into the Yerkess locker room last time in NY and heisted A*Clod’s stash or something.

6-0, 0.40, with a K/BB of 54/8. Holy crap. Read ’em and [bleep].

I guess now is not a good time to note that Greinke was selected after a certain ....

… Adam something or other. You know, that pitcher turned outfield in the Toronto system.

I know most of the lineup hasn’t been producing but it was good to see Wiggington and Izturis get an RBI. I’m not an Adam Eaton fan at all but I thought, every once in a while, you could see why he has stuck around for so long. He threw some pretty nice pitches but unfortunately they are the minority.

BRob

I voted for Brian due in fact that if he didn’t give us those insurance runs late in the game, Sherrill would’ve lobbed it over the plate for one of those big power bats in the Rays lineup to crush it and leave us with another late game loss. Georgie boy is looking so god awful, I wish they wouldn’t even put him out there in these non-save situations.

If Roberts didn't get those insurance runs

I’m not sure if Georgie boy would have been pitching in the ninth; at least not the full inning.

True

We don’t really know who DD is going to march out there until we see another save situation. I have a feeling its going to be Ray but he may stick with Sherrill all depending if its vs. lefties or righties.

Thats why I voted for him

I'd argue Huff is doing better than okay

He’s near the top of the league in RBI. But yeah, that win was so overdue.

by Pack Man on May 5, 2009 10:43 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Big whoop. Look who’s hitting in front of him. I’m not judging a man on RBIs. He’s OPSing .800. He’s doing OK.

by SC on May 5, 2009 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Huff could bat .250 and be in the top 10 with those 3

but yeah, Huff Daddy’s doing OK.

Big game of pitching tonight in the minors

Rich Hill, David Hernandez, Jake Arrieta, and Troy Patton all pitching (assume they don’t get rained out). I can’t find who’s pitching for Frederick (also a double header) or Delmarva. If it clears up it might be a nice night to go down to Bowie for the games.

Zach Britton should be starting one of the games for Frederick

It could definitely be a nice showcase night for the minor league arms, weather permitting.

btw...

the doctor has 10 bb this year and i believe pie has a roughly comparable bb rate. in his few plate appearances this year, montanez has showed improved patience over last year, but not as good as the other two.

huff really isn’t doing very well. not terrible, mind you, just not all that good.

Have a link

http://www.fangraphs.com/winss.aspx?team=Orioles&pos=all&stats=bat&qual=0&type=1&season=2009&month=0

Average BB% is about 10%, K% is about 20% right now.

Pie is striking out way too much. Lou also, but not much data there.
Roberts needs to walk a bit more as a leadoff guy, but his K rate is low(er than I thought).
Huff is getting outslugged by Luuke, BRob, Jonesy and Kickass. Which is total horseshit.

i voted for Nick

but if baez doesn’t prevent the 5th run from scoring, (runner on 2nd, 0 outs; runner on 3rd, 1 out) then we don’t win the game (a la the “here we go again syndrome”)

Let's not for get Felix Pie

What an effort. Let’s put this in perspective. Dave “Priceline” Trembley took Luke out and inserted Felix for defensive purposes. The move of the game as it seems. Flat Brim was aweful as usual. If Felix does not get to that ball with the dive and because it was two outs that means all the Rays on base were running. The ball drops and undoubtly would score 3 runs at the least with a man on 2nd or 3rd and the winning run coming to the plate. That catch was huge and the determination on his face is what I want to see from all of our O’s. Good win indeed.

Our hero

Although did anyone hear Jim Hunter on the post game show? He said Luke probably wouldn’t have gotten to that ball (true) because his glove is on the other hand (FALSE, they’re both lefties Jim!)

haha...

I heard him say that he probably wouldn’t have caught it and plugged my ears for a loud BANG in case Luke heard him. I guess that’s when he said the whole glove thing b/c I missed that. I did see ZAUN’S uncle cut in before the 9th to babble about something and I wish they’d cut that out.

Props to defensive grabs

by both Nick and Felix.

Also, I’d have put Baez in as a MBP choice. I probably wouldn’t have voted for him, but bailing out Eaton yet again is Birdland.

I just looked at the game notes at Bowie

Jake Arietta , 2-0, 2.00 is starting the first game. Last outing was 6.0 of shutout pitching against Erie.

Fredy Deza, 1-1, 2.63 is starting the second game. Fredy has been up and down between Norfolk and Bowie this season. He is a RHP from the Dominican Republic. In 2008 he had success in Aberdeen and Fredrick. He finished 2008 at Norfolk pitching 8.0 innings with a 2.25 ERA.

Also Freel was signing for the fans Saturday and looked to be in a better mood. One of the kids was questioning Freel why he was there. Freel took the time to explain the head injury. The kid said he was hit in the head too which brought a good laugh from Freel. He has shown nothing at the plate but I guess that is why he is on rehab to regain his stroke. We will see tonight.
